  24. What this list is
  25. -----------------
  26.
  27. This is a list of resources for *emotional* support on the Internet and
  28. interconnected systems. It is intended to help you find and use these
  29. groups. Please do *not* mass mail this list for *any* reason at all.
  30.
  31. Groups and resources with a focus on information giving, campaigning
  32. academic study or advocacy are not listed. Some groups are not listed
  33. because I know that they *can* be too rough on people seeking support. On
  34. the other hand, I have not been able to give all these groups a full "road
  35. test".
  36.
  37. PLEASE LET ME KNOW of errors, changes etc.
  38. mailto:steveha@cix.compulink.co.uk
  39.
  40. Anonymity and Privacy Update
  41. ----------------------------
  42.
  43.  One of the most useful anonymous servers for our purposes is the little
  44. known "Twwells" service. Although this has many restrictions, most of them
  45. don't really get in the way of use for support groups. Mailing list
  46. membership is out, though. For more information, mail help@anon.twwells.com
  47.
  48.  Keeping sensitive information confidential? Encrypt your e-mail with
  49. "Pretty Good Privacy" (tm). "PGP" is a powerful engine and we supply the
  50. rest of the car! See http://www.compulink.co.uk/~net-services/pgp/
  51.
  52. How to use this list
  53. --------------------
  54.
  55.  Find the subject in the first column. Look under several headings.
  56. Generally, you should mail the address in the second column 2 and (where
  57. listed) "say" the command shown in the body of your message.
  58.
  59.  A few of these e-mail addresses are prefixed "mailto:". With these, you
  60. are talking direct to a person rather than joining a group.
  61.
  62.  Where an address is prefixed "news:", you should use your system's normal
  63. command for joining Usenet groups. An alternative route is to send your
  64. post as mail to name-of-group@news.demon.co.uk. Many of these groups are
  65. in the "alt" hierarchy and you may find that your system doesn't carry the
  66. group you want. Try asking your system administrator to add the missing
  67. group.
  68.
  69.  Note: some browsers will suppress the "mailto:" and "news:" tags
  70.
  71.  Where an address is prefixed "AOL", "CIS", "CIX", Genie, Prodigy or
  72. "Delphi", the group is restricted to users of the named system and you
  73. should use that system's normal command for joining a "conference", "forum"
  74. etc.
  75.
  76.  Note that references to "CIX" refer to the UK based system of that name.
  77. Even if you are not in the UK, CIX membership is possible by Telneting to
  78. cix.compulink.co.uk. They charge 29.38 pounds sign up and a monthly minimum
  79. of 7.34 pounds for which you get at least 100 minutes. On line registration
  80. by credit card. Is something similar for the other systems I mention?
  81. Please tell me!
  82.
  83.  These groups are not suitable for those who wish to argue that the
  84. particular condition does not exist. If you believe that what you have to
  85. say may upset some readers, use a "spoiler". For example, you might prefix
  86. your message:
  87.
  88.  "SPOILER: Explicit account of rape"
  89.
  90.  and put lots of blank lines between that and the main text.
  91.
  92.  These are primarily *support* groups. They *may* be good sources of
  93. information too. Let this slant influence the way you post to a group. If
  94. someone posts "Hey, I've just been diagnosed with X disease, anyone know a
  95. good doctor?", ask how badly it's affecting them and how they feel about
  96. it. Information exchange can be valuable but often the hardest thing to
  97. find is personal emotional support.
  98.
  99. Checking the "Rules"
  100. --------------------
  101.
  102.  Be careful to read any "Welcome" message sent to you when you join a
  103. mailing list or any other source of information about local "rules". Often,
  104. what's on the list is considered confidential and expected to stay on the
  105. list. Some posters to Usenet groups maintain that they are confidential
  106. too. Given the public nature of Usenet it's more gray. Always remember
  107. these are *support* groups and not hunting grounds for those who want to
  108. "save" people. Let them be a "safe" place, safe to post a suicide note
  109. even.

  472.
  473. Checking out the "agenda"
  474. -------------------------
  475.
  476. Almost all of these resources are self-help groups. They don't try to sell
  477. you anything. Of course, individual members may have their own agenda and
  478. occasionally you'll see blatant commercial postings - usually from
  479. outsiders.
  480.
  481.  When an *organisation* offers a resource, you're entitled to expect it to
  482. have an agenda of some sort and to be able to discover what it is. The only
  483. organisation currently listed is The Samaritans. They're a non-profit,
  484. non-religious support service for the suicidal and despairing. Their only
  485. agenda is emotional support. They don't sell anything.
  486.
  487.  There's a few other people around on the Net offering support services.
  488. With some of them, I haven't yet been able to discover their agenda. With
  489. others, at least part of their agenda is to sell you something. Now,
  490. there's nothing wrong with someone earning a living in this area but when
  491. your audience is potentially vulnerable, it's important that your agenda is
  492. easily visible. Such visibility cannot be conveyed easily in a listing such
  493. as this so that's why such resources are not here. Having said that, I'd be
  494. interested in hearing from *anybody* on this issue.
  495.
  496.  Finally, what's *my* agenda? Firstly I believe that offering people
  497. emotional support is a "Good Thing". The other half is that I believe that
  498. many more helping organisations are going to get on the Net soon and I'd
  499. like to do some consultancy work for them.
  500.
  501. Quiet and Busy Groups
  502. ---------------------
  503.
  504. Some of these are very busy with dozens of messages a day. If you find that
  505. doesn't suit you, look to see if there's an alternative. It may be a cue
  506. that a *regional* group is needed if only to become manageable.
  507.
  508.  At the other end, you may find that a group seems to be dead. This can be
  509. natural, especially in a small group. It doesn't mean that the group is no
  510. good so don't let that put you off asking for support. The group may spring
  511. to life and help you and then subside.
  512.
  513.
  514. Start your own group? Some thoughts
  515. -----------------------------------
  516.
  517. First of all, ask yourself why. One good answer is that you can't find what
  518. you need in an existing group.  You'll probably need to devote a fair
  519. amount of effort to starting up and publicising. Starting up on your local
  520. system can be an easy step and generally allows you to control entry.
  521. However, if your subject is too narrow and/or your local system too small
  522. you might end up all alone! On the other hand, don't expect a group to be a
  523. constant hive of activity. I know several good groups with only a few dozen
  524. members where it's often quiet for weeks. When a member needs the group -
  525. it springs to life.
  526.
  527.  If you are ambitious, you'll be thinking in terms of a Usenet group. The
  528. procedure for getting a new group in the "big" hierarchies is well
  529. documented. It can be easier to start  up an "alt" group - start talking to
  530. the people on alt.config. Alt groups tend not to be carried by so many
  531. sites and your coverage will be less.
  532.
  533.  Some very successful groups are based on automated mailing lists. That's
  534. how most of the resources on my list that require you to say "subscribe"
  535. work. Anonymous posting to such groups can be tricky. But see "Anonymity
  536. and Privacy Update" near the top.
  537.
  538.  Most group are self-help but The Samaritans suicide hotline in the list is
  539. modelled on the traditional telephone service. There you are talking to
  540. trained volunteers. Starting such a service is a major undertaking and I'm
  541. available for consultation :-)
  542.
  543. Update policy
  544. -------------
