  30. information is drawn from a number of resources, including electronic
  31. discussions, hard copy correspondence, internal Temple of Set documents,
  32. etc.

  43. This FAQ's answers are intentionally brief and concise, sometimes
  44. excessively so, to keep this document's size down. More detailed

  52. Qualifications: Balanone has been an active member of the Temple of Set
  53. since early 1976, and so is intimately familiar with Setian philosophy and
  54. practice. While this document is just one person's statement, and not an
  55. official statement from/by the organization, this person has the depth of
  56. experience to be reasonably confident in his accuracy. Corrections,
  57. additions, and differences of opinion from other members of the Temple of
  58. Set are more than welcome, and within reason all such will be included in
  59. this document.

  115. The Temple of Set is probably best described as an initiatory magical order
  116. of the Left Hand Path, a description which probably doesn't mean much to
  117. those without occult backgrounds.
  118.  
  119. "Initiatory" means the ToS advocates self-advancement through a series of
  120. levels of self-knowledge and similar attributes.
  121.  
  122. "Magical" means that the ToS openly works with magic (non-scientific cause
  123. and effect), not stage magic.
  124.  
  125. "Left Hand Path" indicates that the path followed by Setians is one of
  126. concentration and refinement of the self, leading toward more and more
  127. individuality and more and more individualism, as opposed to the Right Hand
  128. Path goals of growing toward some outwardly determined standard.

  142. -  Balanone: Setian Philosophy centers around the Egyptian concept of Xeper
  143.    (often spelled Khepher), personified by the Egyptian Neter (god?) Xepera
  144.    (Khephra), a concept that can be translated to "self improvement," or
  145.    perhaps "Be all you can be."
  146.  
  147.    Though that statement above seems simple enough, the study and pursuit
  148.    of Xeper has proven complex and long, intriguing and challenging enough
  149.    to keep Setians occupied for a life time.
  150.  
  151. -  Apr 28, 1996, Priest Roger Whitaker, Xepera-l: 
  152.  
  153.    Xeper describes a methodology for manifestation. You cannot separate
  154.    yourself from the force which motivates one to Xeper. It is ingrained
  155.    within the many and varied paths which lead to it. Xeper such as it is
  156.    results in a deeper recognition of Self consciousness, i.e., the
  157.    uniquely human ability to sense its separateness within the body even
  158.    while it resides within it. This heightened sense of Self Being, itself
  159.    the result of polaric constituents - its me, in this other thing called
  160.    a body - becomes a building block of a personal methodology based upon
  161.    knowledge, intuition, learning and change as a result of the preceding.
  162.  
  163.    The results of Xeper are manifestations into the world of ideas, art,
  164.    science and culture. For the individual the results of Xeper become a
  165.    metaphysical departure point for developing a bond with the Prince of
  166.    Darkness by creating a matrix of linked ideas whose path leads towards
  167.    the Genesis of Self Being.

  173. 2.2     Initiation
  174.  
  175. -  What do those necklaces and medallions mean?
  176.  
  177.    The Temple of Set is an initiatory organization, dedicated to the
  178.    initiation and growth of its members.
  179.  
  180.    That dedication to initiation, to the philosophy of Xeper, and to Set,
  181.    is represented by our primary symbol, the Pentagram of Set (a point-down
  182.    pentagram within a circle). To help our members identify each other so
  183.    we can work together, and to help them identify which level of
  184.    initiation has been achieved by each other, we wear this symbol on
  185.    different colored medallions, normally worn on necklaces of some kind,
  186.    at formal gatherings.
  187.  
  188.    There are six levels of initiation recognized within the Temple of Set,
  189.    each with its specific color medallion.
  190.  
  191.    -  The first degree member wears a white medallion. This is a period of
  192.       trial membership, in which the member begins to explore our
  193.       philosophies, our practices, and our society. The member can decide
  194.       whether our organization is one which will help the member's
  195.       personal growth, and if not he is welcome to leave at any time, with
  196.       our good wishes. Likewise, during this period we determine whether
  197.       the member will function well within our society, will benefit from
  198.       our activity, and will eventually be able to help others in the
  199.       organization with their personal growth. If not, then their
  200.       membership is terminated, hopefully with no hard feelings. We title
  201.       this degree "Setian," which is also the generic name for all of our
  202.       members. The term stands for all who pursue their self deification
  203.       while in contact with the philosophical and magical stream of the
  204.       Temple.
  205.  
  206.    -  The second degree wears a red medallion. This is a member who has
  207.       completed the trial membership and has been found to be compatible
  208.       with and a valued contributor to the Temple of Set, just as we have
  209.       been found to be useful to the member's own growth. More, through
  210.       hard work the individual has opened him- or herself to the forces of
  211.       Becoming within the body-soul complex. This is a place of great
  212.       excitement and achievement. We Recognize our Adepts by the quality
  213.       of their adventures and projects. This is where we differ form most
  214.       occult schools that would award degrees based on knowledge and
  215.       memory feats. These members are free to work with our philosophies
  216.       and to participate in our activities to the fullest. More members
  217.       are in the second degree than any other level of initiation. We
  218.       title this degree "Adept," declaring them able to pursue any and all
  219.       goals applicable to their personal growth.
  220.  
  221.    -  The third degree wears a black medallion. This is a member who not
  222.       only has shown all of the qualities of an advanced second degree
  223.       member, but who has also been chosen by Set to serve in his
  224.       priesthood. This member has demonstrated abilities in working with
  225.       and representing Set and the Temple of Set. We title this degree
  226.       "Priest." Another way of putting this: the Third Degree Setian has
  227.       become Resonate with the Work of Set. He or she is directly
  228.       empowered by Set and charged him to expand the Setian experience --
  229.       this includes everything form running the Temple, which belongs to
  230.       its Priesthood, to a variety of scholarly, artistic, or (obviously)
  231.       magical endeavors to increase the Setian mindscape. Third Degrees
  232.       can represent the Temple in most matters. If you have any questions
  233.       concerning the Temple of Set (the organization, our activities,
  234.       beliefs, or members), these members are the best qualified to answer
  235.       your questions.

  237.    -  The fourth degree wears a blue medallion. The Fourth Degree Setian
  238.       is the founder of a school of thought in the Temple, which may
  239.       effect the general philosophical and magical actions of mankind as
  240.       well. These schools of thought are called Orders. Some such as the
  241.       Order of the Vampyre or the Order of the Trapezoid are well known
  242.       beyond the boundaries of the Temple walls, while others have lower
  243.       profiles. The job of the Fourth Degree is the discovery and
  244.       articulation of communicable methods of Initiation. The Orders bear
  245.       the same relationship to the Temple as departments do to a
  246.       University. They are places for the Adept to specialize in pursuit
  247.       of the specialized tools for their personal achievement.
  248.  
  249.    -  The fifth wears a purple medallion. The sixth wears a gold
  250.       medallion. The distinctions between these grades of initiation are
  251.       very meaningful within the Temple of Set, but for most purposes you
  252.       can consider them as variations upon the fourth degree.

  259. 2.3     Satanism
  260.  
  261. Is the Temple of Set a Satanic organization?
  262.  
  263. The Temple of Set as an organization was founded in 1975 by Dr. Michael
  264. Aquino, in San Francisco. Its initial membership came from the Church of
  265. Satan (that infamous "Satanic" organization of the carny Anton LaVey),
  266. composed of CoS members who felt there was something real and important
  267. about the magic they were exploring, and felt that Anton LaVey's antics of
  268. that year were in contradiction to their own experiences. The Temple of Set
  269. has grown a lot in scope and maturity in those twenty years.
  270.  
  271. Because of this history, and because of the many antinomian pursuits
  272. followed by Setians, many people will call the Temple of Set "Satanic."
  273. Many Setians do, too, but not all.
  274.  
  275. "Satan" is a name given to the Prince of Darkness, just like "Set" is a
  276. name given to the Prince of Darkness. However, "Set" is a name given by a
  277. religion which found Setian principles attractive and noble, and which
  278. honored the Prince of Darkness. "Satan" is a name given to the Prince of
  279. Darkness by Christianity out of fear and revulsion. The Christian Satan is
  280. a twisted bastardization of the true Prince of Darkness.
  281.  
  282. "Satanism" is a term used by many to describe the Left Hand Path in the
  283. West. We are a proud part of the tradition of spiritual dissent, differing
  284. philosophically from the Church of Satan. Their take on the Left Hand Path
  285. is the Immanent Path wherein godhood is achieved by the worship of the
  286. carnal ego with no possibility of personal immortality save in some vague
  287. connection to the organic stream. We are followers of the Transcendental
  288. path, wherein person immortality is achievable by a strengthening of the
  289. idealized Self. In an increasingly post-Christian world, the term
  290. "Satanism" will become irrelevant.

  295. 2.4     Left Hand Path
  296.  
  297. The Left Hand Path is the tradition of spiritual dissent. It is a process
  298. of using the ideas and actions of the Seeker to create or realize an
  299. immortal, individual, potent, and powerful essence that will survive death.
  300. The Left Hand Path is the quest for personal immortality, won by hard
  301. effort without grace of gods, even of our role model, Set.
  302.  
  303. 2.5     Metaphysics
  304.

  307. 2.6     Dogma vs Doctrine
  308.  
  309. The Temple of Set has no dogma, but it does have teachings. We're sometimes
  310. accused of having dogma because of these teachings.
  311.  
  312. The REF document includes some discussion detailing the distinction I see
  313. between doctrine and dogma. 
  314.  
  315. There is some disagreement on this issue, primarily I believe because
  316. people use different definitions for dogma.  For example, in reviewing a
  317. draft of this FAQ, Magus Don Webb, the High Priest, suggested I erred in my
  318. statement above:

  334. Is the Temple of Set a religion?
  335.  
  336. Yes, although belief in the religion is not required of I* or II* members.
  337. See the REF document for some discussion why I consider the Temple of Set
  338. to be a religion.

  340. 3.2     Set
  341.  
  342. Set is the most ancient name for the Prince of Darkness, given to the
  343. Prince of Darkness in ancient (pre-dynastic) Egypt. Whether Set exists as
  344. an independent metaphysical being, or whether he's a symbol for man's most
  345. individualistic attributes, is a topic always under discussion somewhere in
  346. the Temple of Set.
  347.  
  348. 3.3     The Gift of Set
  349.  
  350. The Gift of Set means so many different things depending upon whom you
  351. speak to. To some it's the gift of Intelligence, to some it's
  352. Consciousness, to some it's the ability to step back from the current
  353. moment/place to see/think about what's happening. To some it's the ability
  354. to work (or at least conceive of) magic. etc. The Gift of Set is whatever
  355. happens to separate us (those with potential) from animals (those without
  356. quite as much potential), which is one of the grey areas that haven't been
  357. clarified very well (some of us not seeing very much difference between
  358. humans and "higher" animals).

  363. >> 4.0  Magic
  364.  
  365. 4.1     Black Magic
  366.  
  367. What is Black Magic? How does the Temple of Set teach it?
  368.  
  369. Black Magic is consciously-directed alteration of one's environment through
  370. obscure natural (Lesser Black Magic) or non-natural (Medial Black Magic)
  371. means, or apprehension of the Forms/Principles of the natural/non-natural
  372. universe (Greater Black Magic). Black Magic inverts the formula of religion
  373. form "Thy will be done!" to "My will be done!"
  374.  
  375. The Temple of Set teaches both theory and practice of LBM/MBM/GBM, along
  376. with individual and social ethical considerations to which the Initiate
  377. must be sensitive in order to use such magical knowledge creatively,
  378. constructively, and responsibly. [Descriptions of "Black Magic" as
  379. involving human or animal sacrifice, rape, or other illegal or
  380. reprehensible practices are merely Judaeo/Christian propaganda, and have no
  381. basis in truth whatever.]

  383. 4.2     Ritual Practices
  384.  
  385. Setian ritual practice is generally not discussed in public forums.
  386. However, some specific questions seem to require answers.

  389. -  Do you sacrifice animals (or children)?
  390.

  401. >> 5.0  The Organization

  408. -  Exploration
  409.  
  410.    Joining the Temple of Set is a serious decision. Anyone who is attracted
  411.    to the Temple of Set through the things you see and hear should
  412.    investigate thoroughly before applying for membership.
  413.  
  414. -  Affiliation
  415.  
  416.    Application to the Temple of Set may be made to the Executive Director
  417.    or to any Priest of Set. Information about this procedure is provided in
  418.    the introductory letter.
  419.  
  420.    -  Assuming you're approved for membership (the Executive Director has
  421.       indicated that the majority of applicants are denied), you as a I*
  422.       Setian you will receive 1) the current edition of the _Crystal
  423.       Tablet of Set_, which includes all of the basic philosophical,
  424.       magical, and initiatory material any Setian would need to begin and
  425.       accomplish his initiation to the II*, 2) a I* Pentagram of Set
  426.       medallion, and 3) a year's subscription to the _Scroll of Set_
  427.       newsletter.
  428.  
  429.    -  You will have two years in which to achieve the II*, using the
  430.       information and inspiration provided by the _Crystal Tablet_, by
  431.       correspondence and other contact with Setians, and through your own
  432.       work towards Initiation.
  433.  
  434.    -  Following from our choice to avoid all practices that would create a
  435.       barrier between us and our self-created divinity, the Setian can not
  436.       in good faith hold membership in any other religious organization
  437.       after he has become an Adept. Membership in organizations that
  438.       advocate illegal action are likewise incompatible with Setian
  439.       affiliation. One cannot be for one's own Xeper, and be working to
  440.       restrict the Xeper of another.
  441.  
  442.    -  The application and its approval.
  443.  
  444.       Though some applications are approved and acted upon quickly, other
  445.       applications for membership in the Temple of Set seem to take a very
  446.       long time. Our "staff" are all volunteers, and their administrative
  447.       activities within the Temple of Set are given appropriate
  448.       priorities, *behind* personal initiation, family, and career.
  449.       Therefore, be prepared for some delay in the processing of your
  450.       application. If the delay seems overly long, it's always helpful to
  451.       send a friendly query to the Executive Director asking about its
  452.       status.
  453.  
  454. -  Departure
  455.  
  456.    You may choose to resign from the Temple of Set at any time for any
  457.    reason. The great majority of people who leave the Temple of Set do so
  458.    simply by not paying their annual dues, and letting their memberships
  459.    expire. Many others send a simple and courteous resignation letter to
  460.    the Executive Director or any Priest.
  461.  
  462.    A few members are automatically expelled upon the completion of two
  463.    years of membership during which they did not achieve the II*. There are
  464.    surprisingly few of these to my mind, probably because the Executive
  465.    Director and Priesthood do such a good job of screening applicants.
  466.  
  467.    Fewer members resign because they encounter something within the Temple
  468.    of Set which they don't like, and fewer still are expelled because they
  469.    prove to be incompatible with Setian philosophy or life.
  470.  
  471. -  Rejoining
  472.  
  473.    Despite the claims of a few who state otherwise, the Temple of Set does
  474.    not pursue those who leave the Temple of Set. Whether that separation
  475.    was friendly, unfriendly, or automatic and impersonal, we feel anyone
  476.    and everyone should be allowed to go their own way, as long as they
  477.    don't interfere with our Xeper or the organization.
  478.  
  479.    A few people who leave the Temple of Set do apply to rejoin the Temple.
  480.    Setians who have left the Temple of their own accord may be allowed to
  481.    rejoin on a case-by-case basis. The Temple is not designed as a
  482.    revolving door, but we do realize that may not have entered the Temple
  483.    at a time conducive to their development. Those that left impersonally
  484.    or on an amicable basis are usually welcomed back without hesitation.
  485.    Those who caused problems during their earlier membership or after their
  486.    departure are carefully examined before they are welcomed back into the
  487.    Temple of Set.
  488.  
  489. 5.2     Relations with Other Organizations
  490.  
  491. By its bylaws, the Temple of Set as an organization can have no formal
  492. relationships or ties with any other organization. Individual Setians,
  493. however, can work with or have dealings with other organizations and its
  494. members. There are two limitations: 1) an Adept II* of the Temple of Set
  495. cannot also be a member of another religious organization, and 2) no Setian
  496. may be a member of an organization which condones or takes part in the
  497. violation of society's laws to the detriment of society.
  498.  
  499. That first limitation has often been a subject for discussion by people who
  500. don't understand it or who want clarification. One clarification I posted
  501. to alt.pagan in 1996 was,
  502.  
  503. "The Temple of Set wouldn't care if a Setian chooses to participate in a
  504. Buddhist retreat, an Indian sweat lodge, a Thelemic Gnostic Mass, a
  505. Passover Seder, a Pagan circle, or whatever. Part of being an Adept
  506. Magician is being able to see and mesh with whatever magic is taking place,
  507. understanding the causes of the ceremony and participating in those causes
  508. as appropriate to our own Will.
  509.  
  510. "However, if someone claimed to seriously believe in the wheel of karma,
  511. and that Xeper is valueless because until we can learn to avoid all
  512. participation in this world we're doomed to ride that wheel cycle after
  513. cycle, then yes, that religious belief would be opposed to the Setian
  514. principles of Xeper, and that person would not be able to remain a member
  515. of the Temple of Set. The two philosophies are simply incompatible."

  520. 5.3     Why the Temple of Set?

  525. 5.4     Our Reputation(s)
  526.  
  527. Lupo the Butcher, in his "alt.satanism FAQ file", states/stated: "The most
  528. vocal of groups which border upon Satanism, is the Temple of Set of Michael
  529. Aquino and friends, which splintered away from the Church of Satan in a
  530. disagreement over monetary policy. They have a number of nasty habits,
  531. including the public publishing of names, addresses and workplaces of
  532. former members as a harassment tactic, disinformation regarding Satanic and
  533. occult groups, including their own, and a good deal of "we are the one true
  534. way" posturing."

  565. Adept to specialize in pursuit of the specialized tools for their personal
  566. achievement. Some Orders, like the Order of the Vampyre or the Order of the
  567. Trapezoid, are well known beyond the boundaries of the Temple walls, while
  568. others have lower profiles.

  724. The Setian Discussions echo (tagname: SET) is the only FTN (Fido Technology
  725. Network) echo hosted by Setians concerning Setian philosophy or the Temple
  726. of Set. Moderation is minimal, topics can be anything of interest to
  727. Setians, and participation is open to all who are not openly hostile to the
  728. Temple or to Setians. This echo is carried on the FIDO North America
  729. backbone, and by most major hubs within PODS. It is carried in Australia by
  730. both FIDO and PODS, and in Germany (and perhaps other areas of Europe) by
  731. PODS. In prior years, the echo was called "Base of Set" (its original name,
  732. as established by Sinistar on the BBS known as Purgatory) and sometimes
  733. simply "SET". If your local BBS or other network doesn't carry the echo,
  734. the echo's moderator (Balanone) will usually work with the Sysop and/or
  735. network to arrange access. Balanone can be contacted through the email
  736. addresses listed in this doc.

  770. the Temple of Set. Anyone who needs a more comprehensive view should

  773. who are active online, whose independent views concerning the Temple of Set
  774. at this time appear to be informed and reasonable, are listed in the REF

  840. us do get spread, generally by people who dislike or fear us for some
  841. reason (perhaps because so little is known about us, or simply because of
  842. our non-Christian belief system, or for other reasons). If anyone (perhaps
  843. someone else at a location of one of our formal meetings, or someone you
  844. meet on the 'net, or some other acquaintance) should ask you any of the
  845. following questions, it's good to be able to give them the correct answers.

  850. non-Christian religion, and then yes, we don't believe in the Christian

  853. beneficial to our members, and we're not anti-social by any means.

  874. On August 14, 1987 CE the San Francisco home of Lilith and Dr. Aquino was
  875. raided by San Francisco Police officer Glen Pamfiloff on a search warrant
  876. obtained as a consequence of the accusations of Army chaplain Lawrence
  877. Adams-Thompson that the Aquinos had kidnapped and sexually abused his
  878. stepdaughter as part of the Presidio of San Francisco day-care witch-hunt.

  880. These claims were investigated in depth by the SFPD, the FBI, and the US
  881. Army CID. No charges were ever made in any jurisdiction, and the evidence
  882. has shown Dr. Aquino and Lilith Aquino to be innocent of any such activity.

  889.    call themselves "Satanists" against the Christian majority?

  891.    I've never understood why Wiccans, Druids, and others might think we
  892.    want their defending. There are ethical and social reasons to do it, and
  893.    that's why Setians generally defend other Pagans against discrimination
  894.    and other forms of attack, but Satanists don't need others to defend
  895.    them -- Satanists would be happy if other Pagans would simply stop
  896.    buying Christianity's lies and attacking the Satanists as if allied with
  897.    Christianity's blind bigots.

  901. -  "Are you witches?" That depends upon your definition of a "witch." We do
  902.    explore activities which many people would call "magic," such as
  903.    telepathy, divination, and methods of strengthening our souls and
  904.    spirits through mental and spiritual discipline. However, modern witches
  905.    usually believe that their magical powers come from one or more gods or
  906.    goddesses, and many Christians believe these powers come from the devil.
  907.    We don't believe in any such gods or goddesses or devils. Most modern
  908.    witches claim we are not witches.

  910. -  Perhaps the most important point to know and remember about us is that
  911.    we believe a primary requirement of self-improvement and individual
  912.    Xeper is to be honorable and ethical. We do not tolerate any illegal

  915.    in individual freedoms, and respect everyone else's desire to live life
  916.    the way they want to, asking in exchange only the freedom to be able to

  920.    many of us will gather in private rooms, local restaurants, and the
  921.    hotel lobby, and we'll just talk for hours, about almost anything. Some
  922.    of our people will even sometimes forget to go to sleep, being so
  923.    wrapped up in talking to people they see only once or twice a year.

  925.    We enjoy life, we enjoy growth, and we enjoy each other. If you spend
  926.    time with Setians, you'll find that most of us smile a lot, honest
  927.    smiles, reflecting the enjoyment we find in life.
