  123.     The following information was  extracted  from the Muslim Consumer Guide
  124.     (which was published in the  newsletter  of MSA Ann Arbor, Jan-Feb. 90),
  125.     then was posted by Muhammad B. Setiawan  (Dept. of Eng. Physics McMaster
  126.     University), and finally collected, edited and distributed by MSA of the
  127.     University of Manitoba, Winnipeg.

  129.     We hope that it be of great  use  to  you  and  that  you  will read the
  130.     ingredient on every product before you  make your purchase. If in doubt,
  131.     you may write to the company, they have  been very helpful in provinding
  132.     the requested information.

  136.     *** CONSULTATION OF COMPANIES *** 
  137.  
  138.     Here are the results  of  consultations  done  by  MSA with various food
  139.     companies. No  particular  questions  were  asked  on  products that may
  140.     contain alcohol.

  143.     1. L.D.Schrieber Cheese Company:
  144.     No shortening, lard, gelatin or lecithin used.
  145.     Cow products are used = Good
  146.     
  147.  
  148.     2. Burger King Corp.:
  149.     Shortening used is from swine = BAD. Lard is used in buns and apple
  150.     pie = BAD. Lecithin is used in buns = BAD/GOOD because you are not
  151.     sure. Shakes = GOOD
  152.

  154.     3. General Foods :
  155.     Lard is used on SWAN DOWN cake mixes. Gelatin (from collagen-bearing
  156.     tissues on any animal) is used in many products including Jell-O Brand
  157.     Gelatin Desert = BAD
  158.

  160.     4. Knox Gelatin Inc. :
  161.     "Knox Gelatin is prepared from the protein collagen, which is extracted
  162.     from either beef (bones and skin) or PORK (skins)" = BAD
  163.

  165.     5. American Lecithin Company :
  166.     "Our Lecithin is derived from Soybeans and is sold under the trade name
  167.     Alcoles" = GOOD
  168.

  170.     6. Nestle :
  171.     A list was sent to MSA confirming that their products do not contain
  172.     any animal by-product. Lechithin used in their products is derived
  173.     from Soybeans = GOOD
  174.

  176.     7. General Mills Inc.:
  177.     Shortening similar to lard is used, also Soya lechithin is used = BAD
  178.     (because it does not say Soya or lard and you don't know so it is
  179.     better to avoid).

  183.     Soyabeans Lecithin is used. Shortening used is from Swine. Some of
  184.     the products are MAsa Trigo, Flako pie crust and cup cake mix.
