  20. As currently defined, NICNAME/WHOIS service is a TCP transaction based
  21. query/response server, running on a few specific central machines,
  22. that provides netwide directory service to Internet users.  The
  23. purpose of the Whois and Network Information Lookup Service Working
  24. Group (WNILS) is to expand and define the standard for WHOIS types of
  25. services, to resolve issues associated with the variations in access
  26. and provide a consistent and predictable service across the network.
  27. This memo describes new features for WHOIS to meet these goals.  This
  28. RFC is a product of the WNILS Working Group of the IETF.
  29.  
  30. This memo provides information for the Internet community.  This memo
  31. does not specify an Internet standard of any kind.  Distribution of
  32. this memo is unlimited.

  34. This announcement is sent to the IETF list and the RFC-DIST list.
