  18. There currently is not a standard mechanism for the reporting of mail
  19. system errors except for the limited set offered by SMTP (Simple Mail
  20. Transfer Protocol0 and the system specific text descriptions sent in
  21. mail messages.  There is a pressing need for a rich machine readable
  22. status code for use in delivery status notifications (DSN).  This
  23. document proposes a new set of status codes for this purpose.  This
  24. RFC is the product of the Notifications and Acknowledgements
  25. Requirements Working Group of the IETF.

  27. This is now a Proposed Standard Protocol.

  29. This document specifies an Internet standards track protocol for the
  30. Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions for
  31. improvements.  Please refer to the current edition of the "Internet
  32. Official Protocol Standards" (STD 1) for the standardization state and
  33. status of this protocol.  Distribution of this memo is unlimited.
