  18. LDAP is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (RFC 1779, RFC
  19. 1777).  This document describes a format for an LDAP Uniform Resource
  20. Locator which will allow Internet clients to have direct access to the
  21. LDAP protocol.  While LDAP currently is used only as a front end to
  22. the X.500 directory, the URL format described here is general enough
  23. to handle the case of stand-alone LDAP servers (i.e., LDAP servers not
  24. back-ended by X.500).  This RFC is the product of the Access,
  25. Searching and Indexing of Directories Working Group of the IETF.

  27. This is now a Proposed Standard Protocol.

  29. This document specifies an Internet standards track protocol for the
  30. Internet community, and requests discussion and suggestions for
  31. improvements.  Please refer to the current edition of the "Internet
  32. Official Protocol Standards" (STD 1) for the standardization state and
  33. status of this protocol.  Distribution of this memo is unlimited.
