ocr: Clock Gear The first mechanical clocks appeared in Europe during the late 14th Century. A clock of that period, built by Henry De Vick of Wurttemberg for the royal palace in Paris, was powered by an enormous 500 pound weight that descended a distance of nearly 32 feet.
