PC DiskMaster v.99h, by Paul Doherty 1998

PC DiskMaster is a file/dir management utility designed for speed and with
the power-user in mind! It can do file and directory maintenance with
copy, move, delete and rename functionality, as well as view images of
BMP, GIF and JPG variety. The dual-paned construction once learned can
yield speed of operation many times faster than with the standard file
management available to you from the operating system. PC DiskMaster
is a full 32-bit program and will run under Windows 95 and Windows NT4
(and maybe under 98 - not tested yet - anyone try it?)
** Several unique features are available in PC DiskMaster: **
High-speed dual-paned user interface speeds file and dir management chores
Shortcuts and alternative ways of performing tasks means PC DiskMaster is
geared to allow you to work in the way that suits you best. For example
image/sound files can be loaded by single-clicking the image/sound and clicking
the PlaySnd button, by double-clicking the sound/image file (or any other type
for that matter), or by scrolling up and down a listing with the cursor keys
and pressing Enter. Once viewing an image you can exit with a mouse click or
by pressing ESC.
"Send Path To" buttons enable quick ability to set directory panes equal
Cumulative wildcards enable multiple wildcards to be applied before an operation
Inverse wildcards allow the selection of all files *but* the given wildcard - you
have to see this one to appreciate it's power!
PC DiskMaster understands natively the following formats and will launch them
internally on ENTER, Double-Click, or selection of file and appropriate button:
WAV, MID, RMI, AVI, BMP, GIF, JPG
Any file format that PCDM understands will be loaded natively inside PCDM, reducing
operating footprint by not depending on other utilities for these base functions.
Any format not natively handled will be launched with the Windows-registered
handler of that file type. For instance double-clicking a *.TXT file will typically
launch NotePad with the file loaded since most Windows installations have TXT files
associated with NotePad. Changing the Windows associations effectively modifies
PC DiskMasters functionality, so if you have great utilities already for certain
file types they will still be in effect!
PC DiskMaster is shareware. If you like it and decide to use it beyond
30 days from the date you install it, you must register it with me.
Registration costs only US 15 dollars. Send check or money order to:

PC DiskMaster is not crippled in any way! Registration is what makes shareware work
and will give you the peace of mind of knowing you have supported the creation of
powerful tools that you like! Registration will entitle you to a free update to the
latest non-crippled release of PC DiskMaster that becomes available. If you have
an email account that can accept files up to 500k in size send that address with your
registration payment and when an updated EXE is available you will receive it by email.
I accept no responsibility for any data loss that may occur from using PC DiskMaster!
Be sure to practice with PC DiskMaster and understand its functions before using it on
non-backed up data.
** Installation **
Visual Basic 5 run-time support files need to be installed before running the PC DiskMaster SETUP.EXE
file. These files are installed only once and will be needed for any other VB5 apps you get in the
future. You can download these files from the PC DiskMaster home page or get them from Microsoft
(address http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/Msvbvm50.exe).
If you are installing a new version of PC DiskMaster, use the Add/Remove item in Control Panels
to remove the existing install before running the Setup.exe of the new version. Alternatively
you can download the updated EXE only from the PC DiskMaster web page and copy this updated EXE
over the original and complete the update with less of a download.
** Updates/Bug fixes **
*** Changes in version .99h
Added time delay for image viewing - 0 for unlimited pause, and 1-999 for seconds between images.
Hitting ESC in slideshow image mode now aborts the rest of the selected pictures being viewed.
New configuration option on whether to allow multiple instances of PC DiskMaster to run (can be toggled
on/off). This allows or disallows more than one copy of PC DiskMaster to run at once.
Added skeleton of structure for new option (not operational yet) to toggle whether PC DiskMaster will
appear in context-sensitive menus (right-mouse menus) for quick access to PCDM from other areas of
Windows.
Space bar or Enter will now advance to next image when multiple images are queued for viewing;
ESC aborts.
*** Changes in version .99g
Added version information to the Help/About menu.
Images can now be queued for viewing of multiple images in order (select multiple images and click
ShowPic, then either hit ESC or click the mouse to go to next pic in order).
*** Changes in version .99f
Added Refresh button to top - found it's needed when removable media change after a dir of one is
already acquired (to get the newly swapped in ones dir without leaving that drive letter).
Reordered command buttons.
Changed message on Play command button to reflect formats understood.
Optimized tab order in Wildcard Command button screen.
Now *all* formats not native to PC DiskMaster will launch with their associated app if double-clicked.
(and will launch with PCDM if natively understood)
Fixed conflict for ALT-D - two Command buttons were using it for shortcut.
File and Dir boxes should now correctly refresh themselves if you have the same dir up on both sides
and delete files or dirs from one side.
Now trapping for condition where a dir delete or move is attempted when the destination is at or a sub
of the source dir. (This was being trapped but the move was attempted to trap and resulted in the
file and dir list boxes changing their paths and refreshing. They no longer do this)
Fixed loading of GIF images - was erroneously reporting non-support if you tried to load GIFs - doh!
Resolved issue where if a directory was deleted from the right pane the now-non-existent directory
was still displayed (didn't fold up to last current dir before dir delete)
Changed bolding of command button text at different resolutions
Added intelligent check for free space before copy and move operations - now the copy and move commands
will not only check for vacant space at the destination directory, but will also take into account
the presence of existing files by the same name as any to be copied, even if their size is different
than the source files size
Fixed esoteric bug where a dir is gotten for a removable media (floppy, CD, Zip drive, etc) and then
the media is removed, and then the Refresh button is pressed, and *then* :-) the Send Path To button
for that pane is pressed to send that path to the other side
*** Changes in version .99e
Handled run-time errors that can be generated by accessing say a floppy drive and then removing the
floppy and trying to click on a filename from that floppy (so dir was successfully read and is still
displayed, but disk is no longer present). Also handled error whereby if a floppy dir was gotten,
and then that floppy was removed and replaced by another floppy and a file in the dir list from
the first floppy was selected without changing to A: (or B:) again. (No one should be encountering
these errors in previous versions unless they were just being malicious! :-)
Modified wildcard selection screen so that inverse and cumulative can not both be on at once since
a cumulative inverse has no usefulness, and an inverse cumulative again has no useful meaning (without
modifying the original intent anyway).
Audio controls now function as intended.
Added source side coloring to indicate which side is the current source for the next operation.
*** Changes in version .99d
Fixed problem where some formats of JPG images would not load
Fixed cumulative wildcard glitch whereby on consecutive wildcards being applied to the right pane
the dialog was indicating left, instead of right (it should (and now does) remember the last place
you applied a wildcard, or rather the last pane you touched, which in the case of multiple cumulative
wildcards would be the same pane.
Selecting Cancel (or hitting ESC) in Wildcard selection dialog no longer resets the current selection
so you won't lose and have to redo the selection if you change your mind upon entering Wildcard.
*** Changes in version .99c
Rearranged file management buttons for easier access
Removed Refresh button (seemed unnecessary)
Added View button for forcing viewing/editing of files as ASCII (many file types already natively
loaded/launched by PC DiskMaster - but custom filetypes like .SYS and others that truly are ASCII
can now be launched with the View button)
Increased vertical space for directory and file windows to more effectively use window area
*** Known Issues
There is a known issue with startup size of PC DiskMaster. If you have your Windows display
settings set to "Large Fonts" then you will get a slightly too large interface at launch (that
you can then size down). Those using "Small Fonts" should not have this issue.
For safety even if you turn on the viewing of System and Hidden files they will not be included in
wildcard operations. For instance if you had Hidden and System files enabled for viewing and selected
with the wildcard button *.SYS the MSDOS.SYS and IO.SYS (if either present) would be visible but would
not be selected in the wildcard operation. The files could still be normally selected with the mouse or
by using Select All. Considering the rarity and usual true system significance of most files marked
as System and Hidden this can keep you from accidentally blowing away important files.
Known issue of speed if large (probably more than 400) files are in a directory and SelectAll or a
wildcard flag of *.* is provided where a long delay after selecting the buttons will go by before
control is returned. The program has not crashed; it is totalling the file sizes to display it on the
status bar at the bottom. I will be working on a resolution to this and hope to have it licked within
a week.
