  5. USING NOTEPAD TO VIEW ON-LINE DOCUMENTS
  6. =======================================
  7.  
  8.   *  If you enlarge Notepad to its maximum size, the following 
  9.      document will be easier to read. To do so, click the 
  10.      Maximize button in the upper-right corner of the Notepad 
  11.      window. Or open the Control menu in the upper-left corner 
  12.      of the Notepad window and choose Maximize.
  13.  
  14.   *  To move through the document, press PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN 
  15.      or click the arrows at the top and bottom of the scroll bar
  16.      along the right of the Notepad window.
  17.  
  18.   *  To print the document, choose Print from the Notepad File 
  19.      menu.
  20.  
  21.   *  For Help using Notepad, press F1.

  24. USING NON-WINDOWS 3270 APPLICATIONS
  25. ===================================
  26.  
  27. This on-line document describes some specific problems you 
  28. might encounter when running non-Windows 3270 emulation 
  29. products with Windows 3.0. 
  30.  
  31.  
  32. Starting 3270 Applications
  33. --------------------------
  34. You can start most 3270 emulator products as memory-
  35. resident applications (also known as terminate-and-stay-
  36. resident, or TSRs). Most memory-resident applications 
  37. are incompatible with a multitasking environment such as 
  38. Windows, and should not be started before you start 
  39. Windows, especially when running Windows 386 enhanced mode.                
  40.                                                                    
  41. However, some other applications can be started before you
  42. start Windows. Only attempt this if the documentation you
  43. received with the application specifies that it will work.
  44. In all other cases, start Windows first, and then run your 
  45. emulator from a DOS Prompt, or directly from Windows 
  46. Program Manager.  
  47.  
  48.  
  49. Getting Optimal Performance with 3270 Applications
  50. --------------------------------------------------
  51. High-speed communications programs like 3270 emulators run 
  52. successfully when you run Windows 3.0 in 386 enhanced mode. 
  53. However, when running in real or standard mode, you must 
  54. select the Prevent Program Switch option in the 3270 
  55. emulator's PIF to ensure against accidental loss of your 
  56. mainframe connection.
  57.  
  58. Note: You will be unable to use the Multimedia extensions when 
  59.           running Windows in real mode.
  60.  
  61. When running in 386 enhanced mode, you will achieve the best 
  62. results by using the following recommendations:
  63.  
  64.   *  Start all 3270 emulation utilities from the DOS prompt.
  65.  
  66.   *  Make sure the virtual machine can run in the background 
  67.      by setting the background bit in the virtual machine's 
  68.      Settings dialog box or in the PIF you use to start the 
  69.      machine. This should prevent your mainframe session 
  70.      from being disconnected when you run other applications.
  71.  
  72.   *  For the best results, run all 3270 emulation 
  73.      applications full screen. 
  74.  
  75.   *  If you do run your 3270 emulator in a window, do not
  76.      use your mouse to select text. Selecting text in this
  77.      way will temporarily suspend your application and
  78.      might cause your mainframe session to be disconnected.
  79.  
  80.   *  To use file send and file receive utilities, you must 
  81.      set the Memory Required parameter for COMMAND.PIF 
  82.      so that enough memory is available to load both the 
  83.      emulator and the utilities at the same time. See the 
  84.      3270 emulator's documentation for memory requirements 
  85.      and recommendations for system settings.
  86.  
  87. If you are running Windows in standard or real mode, and 
  88. cannot use Windows hotkeys to switch away from your 3270 
  89. emulator or to copy the emulator's screen to the Clipboard, 
  90. the emulator is probably intercepting the hotkeys before 
  91. Windows receives them. 
  92.  
  93. *   Try using a hotkey to switch from the host session to 
  94.      the DOS session being maintained by the emulator. This 
  95.      usually causes the emulator to pass the keystrokes on 
  96.      to Windows, thereby allowing you to switch tasks.
  97.  
  98. See the PIF Editor section in the HyperGuide for more information 
  99. about using PIF files. The PIF Editor is part of the Accessories 
  100. Group.
  101.  
  102. IBM Personal Communications/3270 (PCS)
  103. --------------------------------------
  104.   *  PCS reserves specific keys for switching between the host 
  105.      and the MS-DOS sessions. These "hot keys" conflict with the 
  106.      following keys reserved for use by Windows 3.0:
  107.            
  108.        CTRL+ESC
  109.        ALT+TAB
  110.        ALT+ESC
  111.             
  112.      To redefine these key combinations, use a keyboard 
  113.      definition file. You can find the proper procedure in your 
  114.      PCS product documentation.
  115.  
  116.   *  If you want your 286-based PS/2 computer configured to use 
  117.      expanded memory, you must add the following line to your 
  118.      CONFIG.SYS file:
  119.  
  120.        device=PCSX2EMS.SYS
  121.  
  122.      When you ran Setup to install Windows and chose to let 
  123.      Windows modify your CONFIG.SYS, this line was removed. 
  124.      Check the backup, CONFIG.OLD for the exact entry you must 
  125.      add.
  126.  
  127.      See your PCS documentation for further information on
  128.      using PCSX2EMS.SYS.
  129.  
  130.   *  Make sure you always unload PCS before exiting the MS-DOS 
  131.      session where PCS was initialized.
  132.  
  133.   *  If your computer is configured so that no EMS page frame
  134.      is available, you must prevent PCS from using expanded
  135.      memory. Create a program information file (PIF) for 
  136.      PCS and include these settings:
  137.  
  138.        EMS Memory KB Required  0
  139.        EMS Memory KB Limit     0
  140.  
  141.      For information about creating a PIF, see the PIF Editor 
  142.      procedure "Creating New PIFs from Scratch," in HyperGuide. 
  143.      The PIF Editor is part of the Accessories Group.
  144.  
  145.   *  If you access PCS via a gateway on PCLP or Token Ring 
  146.      networks, you must prevent other applications from trying
  147.      to run while PCS is running. Select the Exclusive option 
  148.      in the PIF for PCS to ensure safe operation.
  149.  
  150.  
  151. DCA IRMAX  or IrmaLan
  152. ---------------------
  153.   *  Make sure the DCA keyboard is loaded before you start
  154.      Windows by including the following line in your CONFIG.SYS 
  155.      file:
  156.  
  157.         device=kybddrv.sys -1b
  158.  
  159.      If you are running Windows in real or standard mode, 
  160.      you must toggle to the DOS session before using Windows 
  161.      hotkeys to switch tasks. If you do not, the driver might 
  162.      intercept keystrokes meant for another non-Windows 
  163.      application and send them to the host.         
  164.  
  165. Note: You will be unable to use the Multimedia extensions when 
  166.           running Windows in real mode.
  167.  
  168.   *  If you are running Windows in 386 enhanced mode, add the 
  169.      following line to the [386Enh] section of the SYSTEM.INI 
  170.      file:
  171.  
  172.         LOCAL=EXTKYBD
  173.  
  174.      See the on-line document SYSINI3.TXT for information about
  175.      the procedure.
  176.  
  177.   *  If you want to paste information from the Windows Clipboard 
  178.      to IRMAX, clear the Allow Fast Paste check box in the 
  179.      Advanced Options of the DCA's PIF.
  180.

  182. DCA IRMA Plus+
  183. --------------
  184. You will not be able to terminate IRMA Plus as usual. If you 
  185. press Shift+Shift to switch to the Host, and then press Shift+F6
  186. to exit the emulator, you will return to the DOS prompt, not to
  187. the IRMA Pop-up program box. At this point, you can press 
  188. ALT+TAB and return to Windows, but you cannot exit the emulator.  
  189.  
  190. To terminate properly, create the following batch file:
  191.  
  192.   echo off
  193.   cls
  194.   %1 %2 %3 %4 %5 %6 %7 %8 %9
  195.   echo MICROSOFT WINDOWS POP-UP SUPPORT
  196.   echo Your pop-up program has been loaded and you may activate 
  197.   it as echo you would normally. When you have finished using 
  198.   this pop-up echo program, exit it or press any key to return 
  199.   to Windows.
  200.   pause
  201.   command /c echo Done
  202.  
  203. Name the batch file E7.BAT. Create a PIF for IRMA Plus. Enter 
  204. e7.bat as the Program Name, and e7.com as an optional parameter.  
  205.  
  206.   NOTE:  This batch file and its associated PIF file can be used 
  207.          for other programs that terminate abnormally. Be sure 
  208.          that you enter the appropriate application name as the
  209.          optional parameter.

  211.  
  212. Attachmate Extra or Extra Gateway 
  213. ----------------------------------
  214.   *  If you have problems switching away from Extra Gateway, 
  215.      answer Yes to the question "Will you be using Windows 386?" 
  216.      in the Extra Gateway configuration program. Answering Yes 
  217.      enables the -CQ option in your EXTRA.BAT file.
  218.  
  219.   *  To ensure proper termination of Extra, clear the Close
  220.      Window on Exit option (remove the X) in PIF for Extra.
  221.      Alternately, you can use the E7.BAT file as explained in
  222.      the previous topic, "DCA IRMA Plus+."
