- ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 1. Installing Your Applications ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
-
- IBM* Operating System/2* (OS/2*) 2.0 supports a very large application
- portfolio - including thousands of DOS, Microsoft Windows**, and OS/2
- applications. The power and flexibility of OS/2 2.0 allow you to install all
- of the following types of applications and run them concurrently within the
- same desktop environment.
-
- OS/2 1.x (16-bit) applications
- OS/2 2.0 (32-bit) applications
- Microsoft Windows 2.x applications
- Microsoft Windows 3.0 applications
- DOS applications
-
- Most programs written specifically for OS/2 2.0 will have an "installation
- object." To install a program of this type, you place the installation
- diskette in your primary drive (typically, drive A) and then drag the
- installation object from drive A to the OS/2 desktop.
-
- However, a majority of commercially available applications provide their own,
- unique, installation procedure. Even though the applications might have been
- designed for DOS or Windows, they can be easily installed into the OS/2
- environment. These applications also can be integrated into the OS/2 Workplace
- Shell, thus providing a single, consistent environment for all of your
- applications. In other words, your OS/2, DOS, or Windows applications can all
- reside on your desktop and can be started in the same fashion.
-
- Please note the following important considerations, and the information
- referenced in the Master Help Index, when installing an application:
-
- Be prepared!
- Always have the application's documentation at hand and read the
- installation instructions first.
-
- Some applications require that changes be made to your CONFIG.SYS and
- AUTOEXEC.BAT files, so it is recommended that you have current
- back-up copies of these files before installing an application.
-
- It is wise to have utility (maintenance) diskettes available so that
- you can recover your system if the need arises. Use the Create
- Utility Diskettes program in the Configuration Tools folder to create
- these diskettes if you haven't already done so. If you need help for
- using this utility, refer to the online help associated with the
- program.
-
- Getting help
- Help for installing applications and "migrating" DOS and Windows
- applications into the OS/2 Workplace Shell can be found in the Master
- Help Index (located on the OS/2 desktop). The following sections
- should be reviewed as required:
-
- Installing OS/2 programs
- Installing DOS programs
- Installing Windows programs
-
- If something goes wrong
- You should always be adequately prepared if something goes wrong with
- your system, whether or not you are installing an application.
-
- If your application doesn't start or it doesn't work as expected,
- first ensure that you have correctly followed the installation and
- configuration instructions provided with the application.
-
- It is possible, though unlikely, that your system might not start.
- If this happens, you need to be prepared with your utility diskettes
- and the latest backup copy of your CONFIG.SYS file (see reference to
- Create Utility Diskettes above). The system can be started with
- these diskettes and you can restore the CONFIG.SYS file.
-
- The Problem Determination section of the Master Help Index contains
- several topics which could help you identify and fix a problem.
-
- If a problem persists, contact your IBM representative or the
- manufacturer of the application.
