The following is a list of commonly used file extensions under which audio and
image files are stored.

Note: Not all audio and image files use these file extensions or have file
extensions. The table above summarizes some of the more common
extensions used in the industry.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Converting Files to Another format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can convert multimedia files from one supported file format to another. For
example, you can convert files from IBM AVC video image format to OS/2 bit-map
format, if support for these formats is installed. To convert formats:
1. Select the files you want to convert by using the choices in the Multimedia
Data Converter window.
2. Select Convert.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ <hidden> Help for Choosing a Target Path for New Files ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can place converted files in a different directory from the original files
(perhaps to avoid overwriting an existing file having the same name) by doing
the following:
o Type the new directory name in the Target path field of the Convert window.
OR:
o Select the button next to the Target path field to display a list of
available drives and directories from which you can select.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 3. Help for Filename ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
The Filename field is used to:
o Type the complete path and name of the file that you want to view or convert.
o Specify the file-name extension of the files to be displayed in the File
field. For example, if you want to list all .BMP format files located in a
directory named ART on drive C, type:
c:\art\*.bmp
o Change to another directory. To do this, type the drive letter and directory
name. For example, if you want to change to a directory named PICTURES on
drive E, type:
e:\pictures
The Drive field is updated to display drive E and the Directory field is
updated to list the directories on drive E.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 4. Help for File ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field displays the names of files located in the current drive and
directory that match the entry of the Filename field.

This field is used to select the drive that contains the files you want to use.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 6. Help for Directory ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field is used to list and select the directories that are available on the
current drive.
If you want to use files in a directory named \MMOS2\IMAGES\ART, you would
double click on the name of the current directory until get to the directory.
For example, when the current directory is \MMOS2:
1. Double click on IMAGES; \MMOS2\IMAGES becomes the current directory.
2. Double click on ART; \MMOS2\IMAGES\ART, the directory you want, becomes the
current directory.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 7. Help for Convert ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Convert to change the files currently selected from one format to
another.
Only the currently selected files will be converted.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 8. Help for Preview ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select Preview to enable you to display the currently selected image files.
You can preview only supported multimedia image files.

Select Include to specify certain types of file formats to be displayed in the
File field.

Select Cancel to close the Multimedia Data Converter window and end the
conversion program.

Select Help to get help information about the current window.

You can specify the format that the selected files will be converted to (target
format), the extensions for both image and audio files, and the location where
the converted file will be stored.

ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 13. Help for Files to be Converted ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field displays the location and file name of each file that was selected
in the File field in the Multimedia Data Converter window.
These files are converted in the order of their selection when the Convert push
button is selected.
Note: Do not select Convert unless you are satisfied with the other
selections in the Convert window.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 14. Help for Image Target Format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this list to specify the format you want to convert the selected image
files to.
The default extension for the selected file format is displayed in the
Extension field.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 15. Help for Extension ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field displays the default extension for the file format displayed in the
Image target format field of the Convert window.
You can change the file-name extension by typing over the current one.
Note: A file-name extension can be any length that is supported by the file
system you are using. For example, the FAT file system allows up to 3
characters. Global file-name characters (* or ?) are not allowed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 16. Help for Audio Target Format ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Use this list is to specify the format you want to convert the selected audio
files to:
1. Select the arrow to the right of the file to display the list of formats.
2. Select the format.
3. Select Convert.
The default extension for the selected format is displayed in the Extension
field.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 17. Help for Extension ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field displays the default extension for the file format displayed in the
Audio target format field of the Convert window.
You can change the file-name extension by typing over the current one.
Note: A file-name extension can be any length that is supported by the file
system you are using. For example, the FAT file system allows up to 3
characters. Global file-name characters (* or ?) are not allowed.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 18. Help for Target Path ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
This field specifies where the converted files will be stored. When the Convert
window first appears, the location is the same as that of the files being
converted. To change the path:
o Select the arrow to the right of the Target path field and select from the
displayed list.
OR:
o Type a new path over the current path.

Select the up arrow to specify a location where the converted files are to be
stored.

Select Convert to start the conversion of the files listed in the Files to be
converted field.

confirmation is required before an existing file is replaced.

Use the Target drive list to select where you want the converted files stored.

Use this field to specify the path to where you want to store the converted
files.
For example, to place the files in the directory, \MMOS2\IMAGES\ART when the
current directory is \MMOS2:
1. Double click on IMAGES; \MMOS2\IMAGES becomes the current directory.
2. Double click on ART; \MMOS2\IMAGES\ART becomes the current directory.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 25. Help for Confirm on Replace ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
Select the Confirm on replace check box to indicate if you want the system to
notify you before a converted file replaces an existing file of the same name.
A check mark in the check box (the default) indicates you will be notified.
Note: If this is not set, converted files will overwrite existing files that
have the same file name.

Select OK to accept the current settings and to close the Target Path window.

Select Cancel to close the Target Path window without saving changes.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 28. Help for Converting ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can view the progress of the conversion process. Both the original file
name and the name of the file being created are displayed. A progress
indicator shows what percentage of the conversion is complete. An Item field
shows the number of the file, out of the total number of files, is being
processed.

This field displays the number of the file currently being converted, and the
total number of files to be converted.

This field displays the name and path of the file that is currently being
converted.

This field displays the name and path of the file being created.

This field contains a progress indicator that displays the percentage of the
current file that has been converted to the new format.

Select Stop to temporarily suspend or cancel the conversion process.

Select Skip to temporarily stop converting the current file, to resume
converting the current file, or to start converting the next file.

You can specify if you want an existing file replaced, if you want to skip a
file and go to the next, or if you want to cancel the conversion process.

This field displays the name of an existing file that has the same name as the
file that is about to be created.
Select Skip if you do not want to replace this file.

Select Replace to replace the existing file with the newly converted file.

Select Skip to start converting the next selected file.
The file displayed in the This file already exists field will not be replaced
by a new one.

Select Cancel to end the conversion process for the current file and all of the
remaining selected files.
ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ 40. Help for Stop File Conversion ΓòÉΓòÉΓòÉ
You can end the conversion process, or resume it at the point where it was
stopped.

This field displays the name and path of the file that is currently being
converted.

remaining selected files. The partially created file is erased.

Select Resume to continue converting the current file at the point where the
process was stopped. The remaining selected files will be converted.

You can temporarily stop converting the current file, and start converting the
next file.

This field is used to display the file format of the file image being
previewed.

This field is used to display the number of colors in the image being
displayed.
Note: The image file might actually contain more colors than those being
displayed. The number of colors that can be displayed is determined by
the capabilities of your system.

Select Convert to make specifications for the conversion process.
