Fisher's only known trip to Niagara, in July 1820, is datable from two dated drawings of the subject (Museum of Fine Arts and Vose Galleries, Boston). This painting has a companion piece, A General View of the Falls of Niagara, also signed and dated 1820. It is probable that D.A. White commissioned the pair. Three other painted views of Niagara by Fisher are also known, as are numerous drawings. The original title of this work is known from a watercolor after the painting that Fisher sent to White in November 1820, which is inscribed: "The Great Horse-Shoe or Canada Fall." The pair of paintings was praised by E.P. Richardson as "the best pictures I have seen by him."

A label formerly on the back of the stretcher bore the inscription: "Young Omahaw, War Eagle, Little Missouri, and Pawnees. Painted at Washington City, 1821, by C.R.[sic]King." When exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1838, the catalog entry read: "Young Omahaw, War Eagle, Little Missouri and Pawnees, Who Visited Washington in 1821. J.G. Chapman." Chapman, a student of King's, owned at least two of his paintings.
