  15.  ABSTRACT:

  17.  Novell Labs has certified these IDE drivers for NetWare v3.12
  18.  and v4.02.  This version of the IDE driver provides enhanced
  19.  support for Current Parameters.  Current Parameters is a
  20.  feature of some of the newer IDE drives.  A potential problem
  21.  with host computer BIOSes that translate IDE drive parameters
  22.  (heads) on drives which do not support Current Parameters is
  23.  described.

  34.  SYMPTOM
  35.  
  36.  Symptoms may include ABENDs soon after the driver is loaded and
  37.  the drive has been accessed.  Other problems may be partition
  38.  conflicts which will likely result in DOS partition accesses
  39.  overwriting NetWare or NetWare overwriting DOS.  File loss or
  40.  corruption or inability to mount volumes would be likely
  41.  symptoms.

  43.  NOTE:  These symptoms and the solution apply in cases where the
  44.  host computer's BIOS translates the IDE drive geometry.  BIOS
  45.  manufacturers will be able to verify that the BIOS translates
  46.  drive geometries.
  47.  
  48.  CAUSE
  49.  
  50.  Previous versions of the IDE.DSK driver used the DOS partition
  51.  table parameters to define the drive geometry for NetWare.
  52.  This method was reliable until host computer BIOSes implemented
  53.  translation of the IDE drive geometry.  Now, that the DOS
  54.  parameters are unreliable, the IDE driver has been enhanced to
  55.  read "Current Parameters" from the drive.  The driver will use
  56.  Current Parameters (CP) if the drive supports them.  Some
  57.  drives do not support CP.  This driver will give the following
  58.  error message if it detects BIOS translation and the drive does
  59.  not support CP:
  60.  
  61.  IDE-040:  Drive xx does not support current parameters.  Drive
  62.  not registered with OS.
  63.  
  64.  Potential Problems:
  65.  
  66.  If the drive does not support CP, then the IDE driver cannot be
  67.  certain what the actual used parameters are.  If the user
  68.  desires, the driver may be loaded with a "/c" parameter which
  69.  will permit the driver to continue.  However, Novell will not
  70.  be responsible for any problems encountered when the driver is
  71.  used in the /c mode.

  73.  When the IDE driver is loaded:  load ide /c port=xx int=x, a
  74.  message and a warning will appear:
  75.  
  76.  IDE-045:  Drive xx does not support current parameters.
  77.  
  78.  **WARNING** Novell does not recommend using this drive in this
  79.  configuration.

  81.  If the translating BIOS does not set the drives parameters to
  82.  other than the native parameters, then even drives which do not
  83.  support CP should work.  The problem arises if the translating
  84.  BIOS sets the drives parameters to other than native and the
  85.  drive does not support CP.  In that case, the IDE driver has no
  86.  method of determining what the used parameters are and in such
  87.  a case the potential for overlapping DOS and NetWare partitions
  88.  exists.  Overlapping partitions will lead to corruption, loss
  89.  of data and/or inability to mount volumes.

  91.  SOLUTION
  92.  
  93.  Use IDE.EXE.  Replace your current IDE.DSK with the appropriate
  94.  3.1X or 4.0X IDE.DSK from IDE.EXE.  NOTE the potential problems
  95.  in the CAUSE section above.
