  29. The minimum system requirements to run the IBM
  30. Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler are:
  31.  
  32.     256-color monitor
  33.     8MB RAM (16MB highly recommended)
  34.     Hard drive (10MB of free space available)**
  35.     Double-spin CD-ROM drive 
  36.     Microsoft Windows* version 3.1 or higher
  37.     QuickTime for Windows (provided)**
  38.     Microsoft Video for Windows (provided)
  39.  
  40. This version of the IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler has been
  41. developed and tested for the Aptiva 610.
  42.  
  43. Please familiarize yourself with your PC hardware and Microsoft Windows 
  44. software.  This information is available in the manuals which accompanied 
  45. your system.
  46.  
  47. **Note: The Sampler can be installed on any of your hard drives, but
  48. QuickTime for Windows has to be installed in the hard drive that contains
  49. the "\Windows" directory. Also, you must install the version of QuickTime
  50. for Windows that is available on this product. The installer removes all
  51. older versions of QuickTime for Windows because they will create conflicts
  52. if they are not removed.

  55. MULTIMEDIA TECHNOLOGY

  58. Multimedia technology is constantly changing and therefore requires users to 
  59. be vigilant about the latest changes in memory usage, drivers, and operating 
  60. systems.  We advise users to maintain contact with the manufacturers of 
  61. their products so that they may receive necessary updates in order to keep 
  62. their systems up with the current technology.

  66. INSTALLATION
  67. ____________
  68.  
  69. The IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler copies selected files on to 
  70. your hard drive.  QUICKTIME FOR WINDOWS 2.01 MUST BE INSTALLED PROPERLY AND 
  71. ALL PREVIOUS VERSIONS DELETED.  QuickTime for Windows installer will 
  72. perform this operation for you.
  73.  
  74. This installation requires approximately 2MB of free space on your
  75. target hard drive.
  76.      
  77.     Step 1    Insert the IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler in the 
  78.         CD-ROM drive.
  79.     Step 2    Select "Run" in the "File" menu of the Program Manager.
  80.     Step 3    Select "Browse" and then select the drive that your copy of 
  81.         the IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler is located. 
  82.         Normally this drive is labeled "D" or "E".   
  83.     Step 4    Select "SETUP.EXE" and then select "OK". 
  84.     Step 5    From the "Run" dialog box, choose "OK".
  85.     Step 6    Follow the directions supplied by the installer program.
  86.         This installer will load QuickTime for Windows, copy 
  87.         selected files into a directory labeled "\IBMMSHD" and 
  88.         create a program groups and icons for both QuickTime for 
  89.         Windows and the IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler.
  90.     Step 7    Restart Windows.
  91.     Step 8    Double-click on the "IBM CD SAMPLER" icon to begin your
  92.         journey.
  93.  
  94.             *** IMPORTANT ***
  95. INSTALL THE NEW VERSION OF QUICKTIME AND ALLOW THE INSTALLER TO DELETE 
  96. OLDER VERSIONS, OTHERWISE, QUICKTIME WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY.  IF YOU BEGIN 
  97. HAVING VIDEO PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLATION, EXIT WINDOWS, RESTART WINDOWS 
  98. AND THEN RESTART THE APPLICATION.   
  99.  
  100. Do not run other applications while running IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM 
  101. Sampler. The IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler requires at least 
  102. 8MB of real memory, 16MB is recommended, and at least a 2MB swap file.  
  103. A larger swap file will improve the IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler
  104. performance.

  108. SPECIAL SYSTEM CONSIDERATIONS
  109. _____________________________
  110.  
  111. Systems using 4MB of RAM may cause the application to run slowly, video and 
  112. audio files to perform erratically and the possibility of system failures. 
  113. We HIGHLY recommend that you have at least 8MB or more of RAM.
  114.  
  115. Systems using the Aria and other non-100% Sound Blaster compatible 
  116. sound cards will play some audio pieces with a slight "buzzing" sound. 
  117.  
  118. When using a Packard-Bell PC please review the README file that was 
  119. installed with QuickTime by clicking the icon included in the program group. 
  120.  
  121. Systems using the Cirrus Logic CL-GD5426-80QC-A video chipset in combination 
  122. with the CL-GD5426/28 v1.43 Windows driver may experience video problems.  
  123. Please replace the video driver with the generic Windows SVGA 640X480 256 
  124. color driver or the Cirrus Logic 542X MultiRes ver. 1.02 driver.

  126. INDIVIDUAL DEMONSTRATION TIPS

  128.  
  129. This section describes problems that can occur for each demo we are
  130. presenting in the IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler.
  131.  
  132. The Sampler:
  133.  
  134. This product was created to run at 640x480 at 256 colors. Running at
  135. a higher resolution will have mixed, unexpected and unsupported results.
  136.  
  137. Clark Howard's Guide to Consumer Survival:
  138.     
  139.     When running in Windows 95, users may experience that Clark 
  140.     Howard's Guide to Consumer Survival will not maximize to full 
  141.     screen.  Please change the setting to the Windows 95 task bar.
  142.         Step 1.  Select START on the task bar
  143.         Step 2.  Select SETTINGS
  144.         Step 3.  Select TASKBAR
  145.         Step 4.  Either Deselect the 'Always On Top' check box,
  146.                  Or     Select 'Auto hide'. 
  147.         
  148.     Please DO NOT "minimize" this sampler. Unstable results may occur.
  149.     In the event this sampler is minimized in Windows 95, Select the
  150.     Ctrl and Esc keys to restore the taskbar.
  151.  
  152.     If you run this demo in a resolution mode higher than 640x480
  153.     it will map out the rest of the screen coverage and be very
  154.     difficult for you to work with. Please use the suggested 
  155.     resolution mode of 640x480x256colors.
  156.  
  157.     If the video fails to run, please check to see that the Video
  158.     For Windows runtime version is loaded correctly and Windows has
  159.     been restarted.
  160.  
  161.     Please remember to quit any applications (Microsoft Write,
  162.     Card File, etc.) that you may open during use of this demonstration.
  163.     Although it will not cause any immediate problems more memory will
  164.     be taken by these applications and therefore cause the Sampler to
  165.     run less smoothly.
  166.  
  167. The Book of Shadowboxes:
  168.  
  169.     Be aware of the sound level being higher on this product due to
  170.     some unexpected difficulties dealing with SoundBlaster Drivers.
  171.     You may wish to turn the volume down and then readjust as the
  172.     demo begins.
  173.  
  174. The Playboy Interview: Three Decades of Interviews:
  175.  
  176.     This is a self-running demonstration and can be interupted by any
  177.     screen saver including the one that comes with Windows. The typical
  178.     advice for all multimedia products is to always switch all screen
  179.     savers off.
  180.  
  181.     To quit this particular demonstration, please hit the "ESC" button
  182.     on your keyboard.

  201. TROUBLESHOOTING
  202. _______________
  203.  
  204. Problem # 1:  Videos do not play.
  205. Be sure that QuickTime is installed on your PC. Consult the "setupenu.hlp" 
  206. file in the QTW directory of this CD for specific installation instructions 
  207. or launch the "setup.exe" file in the same directory.
  208.  
  209. Check to see that Video for Windows has been installed correctly and that
  210. Windows has been restarted.
  211.  
  212. Consult the video card's manufacturer to see if new ROM's or drivers are 
  213. available to make your card compatible with QuickTime 2.0.
  214.  
  215. Problem # 2:  Videos play, but there is no sound.
  216. consult the card's manufacturer to see if new ROM's or drivers are available 
  217. to make your card compatible with QuickTime. 
  218.  
  219. Make sure that your speaker volume is turned up.
  220.  
  221.  
  222. Problem # 3:  The IBM Multimedia Studio's CD-ROM Sampler crashes.
  223. Your CD could be dirty.  Gently clean away dirt and fingerprints carefully.  
  224. Avoid scratching the CD.
