  1. Installation NOTES
  2. June 2, 1996

  4. NOTE: You can view this file again by viewing 
  5. install.txt in CSE 3310 HTML Validator's directory.

  7. 1. If you are upgrading from BETA 1, before 
  8. continuing with the installation, you should delete 
  9. the directory containing the old version, any 
  10. shortcuts referring to HTML Validator, and the 
  11. htmlvalprogram.options file in the main Windows 
  12. directory (usually c:\windows). If you have set up 
  13. your computer to run HTML Validator by right-
  14. clicking on HTML documents, you will have to change 
  15. the location of HTML Validator for each of the 
  16. added actions. Use the Browse Button to specify the 
  17. new location of htmlval.exe in the line containing 
  18. the application used to perform the action.

  20. 2. If CSE HTML Validator is listed in the 
  21. Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, you 
  22. should uninstall the previous installation using 
  23. the Add/Remove Programs before continuing. Remember 
  24. to save any files you may want to keep. Note that 
  25. if you are using BETA 1, there will be no uninstall 
  26. in the Add/Remove Programs.

  28. 3. Make sure that Microsoft Notepad is installed in 
  29. your Windows directory (notepad.exe usually in 
  30. c:\windows\). If not, you may install it from the 
  31. Add/Remove programs application in the Control 
  32. Panel. If Notepad is not installed, HTML Validator 
  33. will not be able to automatically open Notepad with 
  34. the results of validating an HTML document. You 
  35. will then have to use another text viewer to view 
  36. the output.

  38. 4. HTML Validator can be run, after installation, 
  39. by selecting HTML Validator from the CSE 3310 HTML 
  40. Validator Program Group or Folder, or by using Run 
  41. from the Start Menu and typing in htmlval.exe (path 
  42. not necessary).

  44. 5. Refer to the online help file available from 
  45. within HTML Validator for any additional 
  46. assistance. It is recommended that you use the 
  47. ability of HTML Validator to validate a file from 
  48. Explorer by right clicking on a file ending in .htm 
  49. or .html. To set your computer up for this, see 
  50. Setting Up Right-Click Pull Down Menus in the 
  51. online help.
