Don't like to read manuals? Type "Demo" to start the game. The
object of SpaceDude is to attack the enemy's Command Ship (the
mechanical spider) while keeping the red Hoppers from reaching your
city. Press F1 while playing the game to get help with the
interactive scenes (When you see arrows in one of the corners of the
screen you are at an interactive scene).
SpaceDude's Mission
The Dorfs are an evil, warlike race that travel distant galaxies
looking for worlds to conquer. Only one man can stand in their way
(well, teenager actually), and his name is SpaceDude, Hero of the
Galaxy!
After the the Dorfs land on a planet, they advance on the Golden
City in their armed, tank-like Hoppers. SpaceDude needs to find and
defeat their evil leader, KingDorf, before his Hoppers destroy the
Golden City and its peaceful inhabitants.
You win when you drive KingDorf and his troopers from the planet.
You lose when a Hopper reaches the Golden City.
This demo is fully playable but has only part of the game. It quits
before you can win or lose.
HOW TO PLAY
Type "DEMO" and press Enter to start the demo.
The Options Screen
The first time you play, you will see the Options Screen. If your
sound card or its address is different than what is selected, use
the up and down arrows to select a sound card and the right and left
arrows to change the address. Press <Enter> when done. If your
computer locks up or the sounds do not play then your sound card
settings are not correct.
If you want to change the sound card setting later, guide Dude to
the Options Satellite at the scene right after the intro sequence.
If you install a new sound card, you should delete the DUDE.CFG file
in your root directory before playing SpaceDude again.
The Controls
In every interactive scene, a set of arrows will appear in a corner
of the screen. The arrows indicate which keypad keys are active. If
the up arrow is shown then the 8 key on the keypad is active. The
down/left arrow indicates that the 1 key is active, and so on. The
joystick or mouse can be used in place of the keypad. Pressing an
active key will cause SpaceDude to do something. This action varies
during the game. Part of the fun and challenge in each scene is to
discover what the keys do and how to best use them. You may want to
switch between the keypad and mouse or joystick depending on what
feels best to you for each scene.
STARTING A GAME
After the intro, SpaceDude is tumbling in space. Use the keypad to
move SpaceDude around the screen. If you place him over the planet,
he will go to the planet and the game begins. If he is over the
moon, you will see the game credits. If he is over the Options
Satellite, you can select the sound options. If he is over the Black
Hole, the game will end and you will return to DOS. You can quit the
game and return to DOS at any time by pressing the Esc key.
The game begins with an interactive sequence when SpaceDude surfs the
ozone as he descends to the planet. Press the left or right keys to
help him keep his board level so he doesn't tip over and fall.
If SpaceDude wipes out, he falls to the surface of the planet.
SpaceDude's first stop is the Golden City.
THE STRATEGY MAP
Choosing a Mission
Whenever you see the Strategy Map, SpaceDude is in the Golden City
and recovering from his last mission. While he is recovering, the
Travel Time will count down at the top of the screen just above
SpaceDude's face. During the countdown, Hoppers leave the Command
Ship and advance on the Golden City.
After the countdown, SpaceDude is ready to go on his next mission.
You can have SpaceDude build a Defense Post, attack Hoppers, or
fly to the Command Ship to fight his way to KingDorf.
Use the mouse, joystick or keypad to move the Marker around the
map. The number by the Marker tells how much time it will take
SpaceDude to travel from the Golden City to the point on the map
under the Marker.
The Strategy Map shows:
1. Terrain (mountains, lakes, deserts, etc.).
2. The Golden City (usually near the bottom of the screen).
3. Defense Posts that you build (until a Hopper destroys it).
4. The Dorf Command Ship (looks like a large, mechanical spider).
5. Hoppers (when not hidden by terrain or weather).
6. Hazards (Weather, flocks of birds, Meteor Showers, etc. that you
will encounter when traveling on your mission).
7. The Marker. The number below the marker is the travel time
needed to reach this point on the map. The following words
can appear above the Marker when it is over certain things.
Click the left mouse button or press Enter when a word
appears over the Marker to select that mission.
1. Defend - You can build a Defense Post at the marker.
2. Repair - This appears when the Marker is over a Defense Post.
The number above "Repair" is the current strength and this
lets you add to it. The maximum strength of a Defense
Post is 99.
3. Attack - When the Marker is over a Hopper you can attack
it. You can also attack the Dorf's Command Ship if you
place the marker at its entrance. When over a Hopper, the
number above "Attack" is the Hopper's strength.
4. Capture - If two or more Hoppers are in the same area,
you can attempt to capture one. If you are successful,
you can use it to fight the other Hoppers.
Defense Post
With a Defense Post, you can fight the Hopper without traveling.
Whenever a Hopper comes near a Defense Post, you will get to "Man
the Defense Post" to try and destroy the Hopper. You cannot opperate
a Defense Post in this demo. Defense Posts can only be built on
open ground, not in forests, mountains, etc. The game only lets you
place them where a Hopper is likely to pass by.
SpaceDude tows the material needed to build the Defense Post on a
barge to the location you selected. Hazards will threaten the barge
enroute. Every time the barge takes a hit, the starting strength of
the Defense Post decreases. Once you reach the destination, the
Defense Post is built out of the remaining material. If the barge is
destroyed, SpaceDude cannot build the Defense Post so he will return
to the Golden City.
When you are in a Defense Post, the Arrow Key Number shows the
number of hits the Hopper can take before being destroyed. You can
tell the condition of your Defense Post by looking at your gun.
Attack a Hopper
Whenever your Marker is over a Hopper and it says "Attack",
SpaceDude can attack the Hopper with his trusty raygun. Click the
left mouse button or press Enter to start the attack mission.
There are two phases when SpaceDude is attacking a Hopper. The first
phase is the attack phase where SpaceDude tries to shoot the Hopper
as often as possible. Do not run into the Hopper. Once SpaceDude
flies past the Hopper, the second phase begins and it is the
Hopper's turn to shoot at SpaceDude. When the second phase ends, the
first phase begins again.
When attacking a Hopper, the Arrow Key Number shows the number of
hits the Hopper can take before being destroyed.
Capture a Hopper
If you postition your Marker over a Hopper when another Hopper is
nearby, "Capture" will appear over the marker instead of "Attack".
Click the left mouse button or press Enter to begin a Capture
mission. You can try to board and capture a Hopper. If you are
successful, you get to use the captured Hopper to attack any other
nearby Hoppers.
While you are battling Dorf Troopers inside a Hopper, the Arrow Key
Number shows the Troopers remaining.
When you are attacking another Hopper, the Arrow Key Number shows
the number of hits the other Hopper can take before being destroyed.
The condition of your hopper is shown by the bar graph above the
view window.
The down arrow makes your Hopper quickly turn 180 degrees. This is
useful when you lose sight of the Hopper you are fighting.
Attack the Command Ship
"Attack" appears above your markier when it is over the entrance to
the Command Ship (the mechanical spider). You can attack the Command
Ship to try to defeat KingDorf. Click the left mouse button or press
Enter to begin an Attack mission.
This demo has only the first area inside the Command Post.
The first area inside the Command Ship is the factory. SpaceDude
will shoot in the direction that you press. He will also immediately
turn in that direction if he can or turn at the next intersection.
TRAVELING
After you choose a mission, SpaceDude will travel there. He is on a
hostile planet and the creatures that live here can be dangerous (so
can the terrain). During the first part of the trip, SpaceDude
cruises through the sky. The Travel Time is the number by the
arrows. If he gets knocked out of the sky, he completes the trip
near ground level. This gives you another chance to reduce travel
time. If SpaceDude fails to reach 0, the amount of time that is left
is the amount of time the Hoppers have to advance while SpaceDude is
recovering in the Golden City. Even if SpaceDude fails to reach 0,
he will still go on to his destination. After SpaceDude's mission is
over, he returns to the Golden City and you will again see the
Strategy Map. The Travel Time Number that remained at the end of the
last Travel sequence is at the top of the screen. Dude's face will
appear under the number to show that he is recovering from his last
mission. While it is counting down, you may see Hoppers leaving
the Command Ship and advance on the Golden City.
SPECIAL KEYS
<SpaceBar>, <Enter>, the mouse button and the joystick button can be
used to shoot in cases where only one keypad key is used for
shooting.
<S> skips a non-interactive scene. Once a scene is skipped, it will
automatically be skipped from then on. Press <R> at any time to
reset the skipped scenes so that you can see them again.
<P> and <Pause> pauses the game. Press the key again to continue.
<Esc> exits the game.
<J> re-calibrates the joystick. If your joystick doesn't seem to be
working right, center it then press <J>. You will hear a click when
the calibration is done.
<F1> Help. Most areas of the game have help screens that explain
that section of the game.

TROUBLE SHOOTING
Some sound card and computer combinations may cause the action to
pause during the game. If you notice this on your computer then type
"DUDE S" when you start the game.
SpaceDude has been tested under Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. In rare
cases, SpaceDude will lock up soon after the game starts. This is
caused by a conflict between the SpaceDude sound drivers and the
windows sound drivers. The best solution is to start SpaceDude from
DOS. You can also either disable the windows sound drivers or set
the SpaceDude sound configuration to No Sounds.
If SpaceDude locks up before even starting, delete DUDE.CFG from
your root directory. Then when the sound card selection screen
appears, choose either a different sound configuration or No Sounds.
