  32. The Internet PRIVACY Forum is a moderated digest for the discussion and
  33. analysis of issues relating to the general topic of privacy (both personal
  34. and collective) in the "information age" of the 1990's and beyond.  The
  35. moderator will choose submissions for inclusion based on their relevance and
  36. content.  Submissions will not be routinely acknowledged.

  38. All submissions should be addressed to "privacy@vortex.com" and must have
  39. RELEVANT "Subject:" lines; submissions without appropriate and relevant
  40. "Subject:" lines may be ignored.  Excessive "signatures" on submissions are
  41. subject to editing.  Subscriptions are by an automatic "listserv" system; for
  42. subscription information, please send a message consisting of the word
  43. "help" (quotes not included) in the BODY of a message to:
  44. "privacy-request@vortex.com".  Mailing list problems should be reported to
  45. "list-maint@vortex.com".

  51. The PRIVACY Forum archive, including all issues of the digest and all
  52. related materials, is available via anonymous FTP from site "ftp.vortex.com",
  53. in the "/privacy" directory.  Use the FTP login "ftp" or "anonymous", and
  54. enter your e-mail address as the password.  The typical "README" and "INDEX"
  55. files are available to guide you through the files available for FTP
  56. access.  PRIVACY Forum materials may also be obtained automatically via
  57. e-mail through the listserv system.  Please follow the instructions above
  58. for getting the listserv "help" information, which includes details
  59. regarding the "index" and "get" listserv commands, which are used to access
  60. the PRIVACY Forum archive.

  86. Greetings.  The following message arrived too late to get into the previous
  87. digest.  I'm taking the unusual step of sending it out so soon (and without
  88. other items) since I believe that many readers and their friends and
  89. relatives may wish to take *immediate* action based on the information it
  90. contains, which I've verified as correct as far as possible.
  91.  
  92. As you'll read, Lexis-Nexis has established a massive personal database.  It
  93. is possible to request removal, following the procedures outlined below.
  94. I've also learned independently that Mr. Fister, at (800) 227-9597 x1364, is
  95. the contact for verifying that removals have actually been processed.
  96.  
  97. Of course, none of this addresses the issues of how many other similar
  98. commercial databases are out there, ones that most persons don't even know
  99. exist and that may not have any procedures for removal.  And how long do you
  100. *stay* off these databases after a removal has been processed?  This is but
  101. the tip of the proverbial iceberg, but just perhaps it'll help serve as a
  102. wakeup call to the general population.

  110. Subject: Lexis-Nexis personal information database

  112. Lexis-Nexis sells a commercial database called "Ptrax" which holds detailed
  113. personal information on nearly all Americans (L-N claims it contains 300
  114. million names).  This database includes name, current address, up to two
  115. previous addresses, phone number, birth-date, social security number,
  116. mother's maiden name and possible other personal information.  This database
  117. is kept quite current.  Through the Nexis Express service, this information
  118. could be available to any individual with a credit card.
  119.  
  120. As most readers will are aware, such information could easily be used for
  121. theft of identity and other frauds.  It is possible to have one's name
  122. removed from this database by making a telephone request.  Call
  123. (800)543-6862, select option 4 ("all other questions") and tell the
  124. representative answering that you wish to remove your name from the Ptrax
  125. database.  You may also send a fax to (513)865-7360, or physical mail to
  126. LEXIS-NEXIS / P.O. Box 933 / Dayton, Ohio 45401-0933.  Sending physical mail
  127. to confirm your name has been removed is always a good idea.

  129. As word of the existence of this database has spread on the net, Lexis-Nexis
  130. has been inundated with calls, and has set up a special set of operators to
  131. handle the volume.  In addition, Andrew Bleh (rhymes with "Play") is a
  132. manager responsible for this product, and is the person to whom complaints
  133. about the service could be directed.  He can be reached at the above 800
  134. number, selection option 4 and then ask for extension 3385.
