  1.                       HF Aircraft Frequencies
  2.  
  3.      This is a list of HF frequencies normally used for commercial
  4. aircraft operations.  All transmissions use USB, unless otherwise
  5. noted.  These frequencies are used while the aircraft are beyond
  6. VHF line-of-sight of the area air traffic control stations.  Flights
  7. on transoceanic routes are typically out of VHF range for most of
  8. the trip, and therefore rely very heavily on HF communications for
  9. instructions from the air traffic control (ATC) centers.

  11.      I have listed the International Civil Aviation Organization
  12. frequencies first.  These channels relay ATC information, and the
  13. aircraft typically report position, upper level weather conditions,
  14. and so on.  The most common language will be English.

  16.      You will hear exchanges that go something like this:
  17.  
  18.      "New York, New York, Speedbird 94."
  19.  
  20.      "Speedbird 94, New York, go ahead."
  21.  
  22.      "Speedbird 94, position 34 North, 018 West at 1835.  Flight level
  23.       390.  Estimating Trout at 1925. SELCAL BRAVO ALFA SIERRA WHISKEY.
  24.       Static air minus 42, winds 256 diagonal 30."

  26.      This might be confusing at first, but it's really pretty simple.
  27. Speedbird 94 ("niner four") is the aircraft's callsign.  Most will ID
  28. their company name and flight number.  British Airways use Speedbird
  29. and Pan Am use Clipper for calls.  They give a position report along
  30. with the time at which they passed that position, then give their alti-
  31. tude.  Flight level 390 is 39,000 feet.  They estimate their next 
  32. "waypoint," in this case a point labeled TROUT on an aeronautical chart,
  33. at which time they will check in again.  A SELCAL (SELective CALling) is
  34. a set of tones that will break the squelch on the aircraft's radio.  When
  35. the ATC wants to contact the aircrew, they send the SELCAL, and the crew
  36. are alerted that they have traffic.  Otherwise, the crew don't want to
  37. listen to all the chatter on frequency.  Finally, they give temperature,
  38. wind speed and direction at their position.

  40.      The second list involves long-distance operations control 
  41. frequencies, which typically will have airline company information, 
  42. phone patches, etc.  Many tranmsissions will be in the national
  43. language of the airline.
