- NCSA Telnet Digest May 20, 1989 Volume 2 : Issue 24
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Subjects:
- 2.3b4 posted, new beta test version
- user interface problem - command key while moving windows
- server addresses for beta test versions
- TCPort compatibility
- ESCape back to VT102 from Tek emulation requested
- Problem with 2.3 & FastPath
- untarring PC archives
- subnetting problem in 2.2, works in 2.1?
- paste speed to host is too fast, can't be regulated
- keeping track of the different versions, wish list
- 3C503 driver requests (again) and LocalTalk
- Kermit and NCSA Telnet interface compatibility desired
- back issues of NCSA Telnet digests missing
- 32bit color QuickDraw incompatibility?
- problems with FTP over MAC-level bridges
- scrolling bug in VT emulation
-
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Another beta version posted, looks like we are getting close now.
- Changes made in the last couple of weeks are the direct result of
- user feedback about the new features in the 2.3 beta test version.
- Don't feel shy about suggestions and please report all bugs.
-
- b2 to b4:
- fixed Set Transfer Directory, it is real nice now.
- vtlines=24 or however many lines you want this session to be
- block keyword allows you to tune performance, set to 100-200 for
- quick Ctrl-Cs, set to 4000 for slow Ctrl-C with better performance.
- block is set once, not once for each session.
- localkeys={3,19,17} for setting interrupt, suspend and resume keys
- (per session setting)
- passfile="myfile" - myfile may be in system folder instead of requiring
- full pathname as before. Full pathname still works.
- memory allocation should be fixed - report any memory funny business.
- should not get fragmentation causing out of memory errors so often.
- 0 bytes remaining - no longer stays at 0 during the whole transfer.
- '~' the tilde character was annihilated in macros, now allowed.
- Origin mode finally implemented in 2.3b4.
-
- Posted in the NCSA_Telnet/macbeta directory and on the archive-server in
- the Telnet_Mac-beta directory. telnet.b4.sithqx.[1-3]

- Subject: Telnet 2.2 misfeature
-
- I have found one way in which version 2.2 of NCSA Telnet does not conform
- to the User Interface Guidelines, in that it doesn't let you hold the
- command key down to move a window without bringing it to the front. Is
- this fixed in version 2.3?
-
-
- [guilty. One-line fix, it was optionKey, now both option and cmd keys
- will keep it from coming to the front.
- Are there other non-conformities which we should know about? Before it
- is too late for 2.3?

- From: James Pearson <J.Pearson@Cs.Ucl.AC.UK>
-
- I've recently installed Oracle on our Mac II which is supplied with
- Kinetics TCPort TCP/IP driver so that Oracle can talk to remote
- databases. Not surprisingly NCSA Telnet (2.2) fails to work with this
- driver installed.
-
- Is there any way round this (apart from restarting the machine)?
-
- Version 2.3 works with MacTCP drivers, will it work with Kinetics
- TCPort?
-
- Just in case its important, the Mac II is on a LocalTalk network
- connected to an Ethernet via a Kinetics Fastpath-II running KIP.
-
- Many thanks

- in the 2.3 release. With his permission, I will provide them along with

-
- Is there a plan or would it be too much to ask that the Tektronix emulation
- included in the most recent NCSA Telnet software have an instruction (escape
- sequence) for host-initiated switching back from the TEK mode to ANSI (VT102)
- mode? Most of the PC-based TEK emulation programs and the commercially
- available emulation terminals do include this feature.

- Please add me to your list.
-
- I also am requesting information regarding a problem we are experiencing
- with NCSA Telnet for the Macintosh. We are running version 2.2 and are
- experiencing a problem running it over a Kinetics FastPath 4 box.
- Recently we switch our Internet Class C network to a 3 bit subnet. Prior
- to that NCSA Telnet worked fine over the FastPath using the K-STAR
- configuration. After switching to subnetting we are unable to get the
- Machintosh to Telnet. The subnetting is working fine over another Mac II
- and an SE that are attached directly to the Ethernet using Kinetics
- EtherPort boards. Appletalk seems to work fine over the FAstPath since we
- are demoing AlisaShare software and have been using it successfully.
-
- A call to Kinetics resulted in a suggestion that we try NCSA Telnet 2.1.
- They said another site had similar problems after going to subnetting on
- version 2.2 but were successful using version 2.1. If a fix cannot be
- provided for 2.2, please provide a source for version 2.1.

- In response to your request for comments on Mac NCSA 2.3b2:
-
- I mentioned this once before and it wasn't considered to be a "bug",
- but the single reason I use SUMac/IP rather than NCSA is the way
- PASTE works in NCSA. It pastes at LAN speeds rather than at speeds
- any host I work with can accept. The result is either a very long
- annoying series of beeps (if I'm lucky) or a hung session (if I'm
- not). Some solutions used in other software are:
- 1) allow the user to specify that paste should await the echo
- of a previous char before sending the next one;
- 2) allow the user to specify a between char delay (e.g. 10 ms.);
- 3) allow the user to specify an effective reverse speed for
- pastes, e.g. 9600bps.
-
- Thanks for your consideration.
-
-
- [Haven't added this one yet. It is on the "to be done someday" list. Most
- host implementations (most Unix ones, that is) don't have a problem with
- it. Tim K.]

-
- Firstly, thanks for putting up an archive server: will save me a lot of
- trouble. I have also tried the 2.3b3, at least to see that it works.
-
- Now the meat. I find the general situation rather confused, what with
- different versions of telnet (includung the BYU one), plus the tn3270 of
- Brown which is still (here, at least) based on an old version with a
- different config.tel file. (and I never did manage to run from an Appleshare
- server!).
-
- What I need is telnet, including client ftp, running over any of the
- original NCSA drivers, the Apple MacTCP drivers or the Kinetics TCPort
- drivers
- PLUS
- a compatible tn3270 which can run at the same time (one session would do)
- via multifinder. OK, this could only be with Apple's or Kinetics' drivers.
-
- I can quite easily want simultaneously login sessions to VMS or Unix
- systems, a login session to our central IBM VM system and file transfers
- to some yet different systems.
-
- I do not wish to be in any way ungrateful: the software we are getting
- for free is fantastic. All I am trying to say is that it could be even better
- with some good coordination.

- I'm writing to ask whether NCSA has any plans to support the 3Com 3C503.

-
-
- I would like to use the Kermit interface (scripts, key redefinitions, etc.)
- while connected from a PC to a host by TELNET. Our campus has many PC's
- working as RS232 terminals. On the PC's we use Kermit 2.32/A and various
- Kermit programs are used on CDC, VAX and IBM hosts.
-
- We also have a campuswide LAN under TCP/IP protocol. The LAN connects to the
- same hosts and to many PC's. On the PC's we use 3COM 3C501 and WESTERN DIGITAL
- WD8003E cards and NCSA 2.2 program (for TELNET and FTP).
-
- Instructing users would be easier if the two programs (KERMIT and NCSA) would
- have similar user interface, where it is possible. There is much similarity in
- terminal emulation and KERMIT works now also with LAN (NETBIOS and U-B).
-
- Perhaps KERMIT can evolve to TCP/IP emulation? Or other ways of standardizing
- the user interface are known? I would like to have comments from users.
