- I hope I don't sound like I'm jumping on the bandwagon too much,
- but I must add my voice to the many who have already given thanks to the
- folks at NCSA for providing such a good product. Yet another example of
- free software beating the pants off anything you can buy on the commercial
- market.
-
- Now, on to my gripe :-). To my taste, the VT-102 emulation is
- too good, emulating some of the misfeatures of the original. In emacs,
- to get help, you have to type 037 (0x1F). While purists might argue that
- the proper thing to call this is C-_ (control underscore), it is convenient
- to also call it C-?, and in fact the emacs manual does call it that. The
- problem is that on real VT-10x keyboards (and using NCSA telnet), typing
- control-? will get you 017 (0x0F). On most VT clones, typing C-? will
- Get translated to C-_, which will get you help in emacs.
-
- It would be nice if there was an option to toggle which type of
- mapping is used for the funny control characters (i.e. control punctuation).

- Subj: problems with NCSA Telnet 2.0

-
- I am having a problem getting NCSA telnet 2.0 to work with a Kinetics
- FastPath running KIP. I cannot connect via telnet to any of the hosts
- on my ethernet, I just get an immediate 'Cannot connect to xxxxxx' message
- when I attempt a connection. Here is my configuration:
-
- /etc/atalk.local:
-
- # mynet mynode myzone
- 55.0 1 CAMARILLO
- # bridgenet bridgenode bridgeIP
- 55.0 100 128.170.0.100
-
- /etc/atalkatab:
-
- 55.0 H 128.170.0.100 CAMARILLO #ms ob
-
- 56.1 KC 128.170.0.100 CAMARILLO #
- I128.170.0.0 I128.170.0.1 #ipbroad ipname
- I128.170.0.1 L0 #ipdebug ipfile
- L0 L0 L0 L0 S0 S0 #ipother unused unused
- LX0 S0 S9 #flags ipstatic ipdynamic
- S56.1 S55.0 "CAMARILLO" #atneta atnete zonea
-
- config.tel on my macintosh:
-
- name=sdcjove;hostip=128.170.0.1;nameserver=1
- name=icarus;hostip=128.170.0.100
-
- I can ping the Kinetics box 'icarus' from 'sdcjove' and I can also ping
- my Mac when it is running Telnet. I am using dynamic address assignment
- on the Mac, and it chose the IP address 128.170.0.109. What is more
- confusing is that I can connect from sdcjove to the Mac via ftp, but
- the Mac cannot open any data channels. Can anyone tell me what is
- wrong with my configuration files?
-
- Please copy replies directly to me. I have requested to be added to the
- mailing list, but I am not sure that I am on it yet.

- Subject: NCSA Telnet V2.0 for the Macintosh comments

-
- I'd like to make the following comments about NCSA Telnet 2.0 and its
- documentation:
-
- 1) Telnet does not handle keyboard input correctly for the following
- configuration:
-
- MacPlus (running System 3.2)
- Original Mac keyboard
- Numeric keypad
-
- These were 512K Macs upgraded to Mac Pluses; we have a lot of these
- and it would be nice if Telnet supported them.
-
- 2) When "Command Keys" is checked, the Option key does not work correctly
- as a "Control" key on the configuration above or on that configuration
- using the standard MacPlus keyboard.
-
- 3) If NCSA Telnet is "locked" from the Finder (via Get Info), then the user
- is not warned that changes made in "Network Configuration" are not
- saved.
-
- 4) We find the "screen blinking" when ASCII BEL is received to be extremely
- annoying. We would like an option in the "config.tel" to turn this
- "feature" off. This feature is unnecessary, since the system will blink
- the menu bar automatically if sound is turned off via the Control Panel.
-
- 5) There are many places in the "NCSA Telnet for the Macintosh Reference
- Guide" where it appears that the "cloverleaf" or "propeller" symbol
- was meant to be included but does not appear.
-
- 6) In Table 2.1 on page 2.2 of the "Reference Guide, the descriptions
- for VT102 keys PF2 and PF3 are reversed.
-
- Thanks for letting us get our two cents worth in. Wouldn't it be nice
- if all developers made it this easy to comment on their products.
-
-
- [ Ed Note -
- Hmmm, well we missed those two in the docs. Only the "official"
- System 4.1/ Finder 5.5 are supported, since the script manager did
- not exist prior to 4.1.
-
- BTW, how do you users feel about the blinking session?
