HERMES' ARCHA (Version 1.2)
Copyright (c) 1988-89 A. G. Kartsatos
(CIS = 76617,121, GEnie = XTH58515, PLink = HERMES)
*** Shareware Program ***
This program is a utility that provides considerable help to the
user in various archival functions. It will handle the 9 functions:
ARC, UNARC, LISTARC,
PAK, UNPAK, LISTPAK,
ZOO, UNZOO, LISTZOO,
provided that the user has the appropriate archiving utilities in his/her
current c directory.
YOU MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING FILES IN YOUR CURRENT c DIRECTORY:
PAK, ZOO, ARC, ARCL, URC, BOOZ
The files ARCL, URC and BOOZ are included herein for your convenience.
TO RUN IT FROM THE CLI: PRESS "ARCHA" OR "RUN ARCHA".
TO RUN IT FROM THE WORKBENCH: CLICK INTO ARCHA'S ICON.
TO EXIT: CLICK INTO THE "X" GADGET
OR CHOOSE "QUIT" FROM THE MENU.
IMPORTANT NEW FEATURE: TO STOP ARCHA FROM A FUNCTION LIKE "DELETE"
OR "COPY", JUST PRESS THE "TAB KEY". THIS CAN
SAVE A LOT OF FILES WHEN YOU MISTAKENLY TRY
TO DELETE GROUPS OF FILES OR COPY THEM INTO
THE WRONG DESTINATION PATH. The program will
inform you as soon as the current function gets
aborted.
Naturally, these files can be run on their own. ARCL lists the
files of an ARC file, URC extracts the files of an ARC file and BOOZ
does both these functions for a ZOO file.
*** The URC file is the PKAX program (Copyright (c) 1987 PKWARE Inc.). It
is a shareware program. For more information on it and its use, just
press: URC.
The ARCL file was written by Wayne Davison and it is a public domain
program. It is the ARCV program. For more info on it and its use,
just press: ARCL.
The BOOZ file was written by Rahul Dhesi and it is a public domain
program. ***
Back to ARCHA.
ARCHA has several other gadgets that the user might want to use in
connection with archiving functions, or even indepedently.
When you first run ARCHA, you get a listing of all your drives and your
floppies along with their AVAILABLE STORAGE in bytes.
If you put any drive name in the source gadget and then you press
RETURN, the program will try to attach to that drive.
Also, if you CLICK INTO ANY VOLUME NAME of the listing, you get attached
to that volume, provided that that volume exists (disk has not been removed,
etc.).
Another important feature is that after you have attached to a volume,
you can execute ANY VALID COMMAND as follows: enter the command into the
command gadget ("C") and press RETURN.
It is faster to use your archiving functions in RAM:, VD0: or VDK:.
In what follows, CLICK means PRESS THE LEFT MOUSE BUTTON.
MENU:
TOGGLE FONT: This is a useful menu item when you are using text speed-
up programs like FastFonts or BlitzFonts. You can toggle
between the program's built in font and the Topaz 8 font
which is built in your Amiga. Just press LEFT_AMIGA_F
(or choose the TOGGLE FONT menu item) to see the font
change instantly on the table of files on the left of
your screen. Your text scrolling will be much faster with
the Topaz 8 font and one of the above programs.
BUILT IN GADGETS:
ALL: Highlights all files, except directories.
CLEAR: Removes the highlighting from all files and directories.
BYTES: Computes the number of bytes in the selected gadgets. Use
ALL to find out how many bytes are used by the files in the
current directory. Subdirectories are not included.
COPY: Copies all the files that you have selected into the
destination directory that you have entered in gadget D.
ARCHA uses its own COPY routine for this function.
PARENT: Moves up one step in the directory tree. It will stop
moving when it hits a root directory.
MAKEDIR: Creates a new directory with the name that you have
entered in the C gadget. This function will fail if the
buffer in the C gadget is empty, or if the filename in
the C gadget already exists.
DELETE: Deletes the selected file or directory. To delete a direct-
ory, CLICK INTO THE DIRECTORY YOU WANT DELETED AND SLIDE THE
THE MOUSE OVER TO THE DELETE GADGET. Then release the
mouse. If your directory is empty, and there is no DOS
error, it will be deleted.
COPYDIR: This gadget is used to copy a selected directory onto ano-
ther directory in the D gadget. Just CLICK INTO THE DIRECT-
CTORY YOU WANT COPIED AND SLIDE THE MOUSE OVER TO THE
COPYDIR GADGET. Then release the mouse. The entire select-
ed directory will be copied into the directory listed
in the D gadget. The file COPY should be in your c direct-
ory.
RENAME: Renames a selected file or directory. The new name
should be entered in the C gadget on the left. To rename
a directory, just CLICK INTO THE DIRECTORY YOU WANT RENAMED
AND SLIDE THE MOUSE OVER TO THE DELETE GADGET. Then re-
lease the mouse. This will rename your selected directory
with the new name in Gadget C.
ATTENTION: IF YOU WANT A BIGGER WINDOW TO LIST YOUR FILES WHEN YOU
USE THE FOLLOWING ARCHIVING FUNCTIONS FROM THE WORKBENCH,
PLEASE CHANGE THE DIMENSIONS OF THE "ARCHA WINDOW" BY
MODIFYING THE "TOOL TYPES" IN THE ARCHA ICON ACCORDINGLY.
LISTARC: Lists the files in an ARC file you have selected.
UNARC: Unarcs the files of an ARC file you have selected. Then
it re-displays the contents of the current directory with
the files extracted.
ARC: Arcs the files you have selected into an archived file
that has the name you have entered in the C gadget. You
don't have to include the ending .ARC in the C gadget.
LISTPAK: Lists the files in a PAK file you have selected.
UNPAK: Unpaks the files of a PAK file you have selected. Notice
that UNPAK does not display the files while it is extracting.
Also, it does not refresh the listing when it is done. To see
the result of UNPAKing, just wait a bit and then click into
the S gadget (containing the current directory) and press
<RETURN>.
PAK: Paks the files you have selected into an archived file
that has the name you have entered in the C gadget. You
don't have to include the ending .PAK in the C gadget.
LISTZOO: Lists the files in a ZOO file you have selected.
UNZOO: Unzooes the files of a ZOO file you have selected. Then
it re-displays the contents of the current directory with
the files extracted.
ZOO: Zooes the files you have selected into an archived file
that has the name you have entered in the C gadget. You
don't have to include the ending .ZOO in the C gadget.
14 DRIVES: Clicking into any one of these gadgets will list the files
in the corresponding volume. If you don't like the volumes
used, I would be happy to configure your copy to your
personal liking. Just call HERMES BBS (see below).
RUN: This gadget allows you to RUN a highlighted executable
program. Just CLICK into the program's name and then into
this gadget. The file RUN should be in your c directory.
EDIT: Make sure you have a copy of your favourite Editor renamed
EDIT. This should reside in your current c directory.
SHOW: Here is a gadget that activates your favourite IFF picture
show file named SHOW. Make sure that the name of your
picture showing file is SHOW.
E: Executes any command that you insert in the C gadget.
V: Lists all the available volumes along with their available
storage in bytes.
X: Click into it to EXIT the program. Pressing the TAB KEY has
the same effect.
C: COMMAND gadget. Here is where you put the output filename
for MAKEDIR, RENAME, ARC, PAK and ZOO. This is also the
gadget that ACCEPTS YOUR COMMANDS. Enter a command in
this gadget and then press <RETURN> in order to execute the
command. Valid commands only, of course. Please do not
use the CD command in this gadget. The program will get
confused by not knowing where it is! If you want to
manually attach to any of your directories/drives, just
use the SOURCE gadget ("C") below.
S: SOURCE gadget. Here you see the name of the directory that
you are currently attached to. Also, if you enter a path
name in this gadget and then you press <RETURN>, you get
to be attached to that path, provided it is a valid one.
D: DESTINATION gadget. Here you enter the name of a desti-
nation file or directory. It is used by COPY and COPYDIR.
The reason the files ARC and ZOO must be included in your current c
directory (even though you might only want to unarc, unzoo, listarc and
listzoo files) is that ARCL and BOOZ "ask questions" (when run from another
utility) when there are duplicate names in the current directory already.
This program does the following: Assume that you want to UNARC a file
with the name HERMES.ARC. When you click the UNARC gadget, the program opens
a file (Ram:Souli) in RAM: and LISTARCS(!) HERMES.ARC into it. It then tries
to see if any of the files listed in Ram:Souli exist in the current directory.
If this is true, the program runs the ARC program instead of the much smaller
URC program. The same process takes place when you want to UNZOO a program.
THIS PROGRAM IS NOT A FULL-FEATURED DIRECTORY UTILITY. FOR SUCH A
PROGRAM, DOWNLOAD DUHERM27.ARC (DU-HERMES V. 2.7).
ARCHA is a SHAREWARE copyrighted program. If you find it useful,
please send $15.00 to:
