  15. This  demo  distribution  may be freely copied as long as all files are
  16. included and the following conditions are adhered to.  No more than USD
  17. $5.00   may   be  charged  for  a  floppy  disk  containing  it.   This
  18. distribution  is  for  evaluation  purposes  only,  any use beyond that
  19. requires  purchase  of  the complete PC-Task 3 package.  All references
  20. describing/advertising  this distribution must clearly state that it is
  21. a  Demo  version.   This  demo distribution may be freely placed on any
  22. CD-ROM  as  long  as  the  above  conditions are adhered to.  This demo

  29. About the Program 
  30. ----------------- 
  31. Even  though  the world computer market is still dominated by PC's, the
  32. Amiga range of computers is excellent.  You may wish to run PC software
  33. but  do  not want to purchase a second computer.  This is where PC-Task
  34. is  ideal.   It  allows you to run the majority of PC software packages
  35. (that  require  an  80286  processor  or below) on your Amiga computer,
  36. making use of the peripherals and memory (up to 16MB) which you already
  37. own.

  39. The  Multitasking  capabilities of the Amiga range of computers is what
  40. has  set it apart from other computer systems.  PC-Task is no exception
  41. -  it  works  without taking over your computer.  When in operation the
  42. PC-Task  application  can  be  switched  to  when  required.   Multiple
  43. versions of PC-Task can be executed at the one time allowing you to run
  44. multiple  PC  packages at once.  At last pre-emptive multitasking comes
  45. to  the  PC!   The  main  down  side  of  software  emulation is speed,
  46. however,the faster your Amiga, the faster PC-Task's emulation will run.

  49. Program Description
  50. -------------------
  51. PC-Task  3  is the first and only software 80286 emulator for the Amiga
  52. range of computers.
  53.  
  54. The following features are included in this release:
  55.  
  56. - Switchable 8086/80286 emulation
  57. - Support for up to 16MB RAM (15MB extended) of PC memory
  58. - Up to 2 floppy drives and 2 hard drives supported
  59. - Supports hard disk files and hard disk partitions
  60. - High density floppies and CD-ROM support
  61. - Select from MDA, CGA, EGA, VGA and SVGA (512K-2MB) video modes
  62. - Support for up to 256 colours on AGA machines (32 on Old/ECS machines)
  63. - Compatible with graphic boards (eg. EGS Spectrum, Picasso)
  64. - Parallel, Serial and PC speaker emulation
  65. - Mouse support, including Serial Mouse emulation
  66. - Run multiple PC-Task processes on the same machine
  67. - Run MS-DOS applications in a window on a public screen (eg. Workbench)
  68. - Transfer files between your Amiga and MS-DOS

  78. About this Demo
  79. ---------------
  80. This  demo  has  been  released  to give you some idea of the speed and
  81. functionality  of  the  PC-Task  package.   You will not be able to run
  82. software that needs to write to disk (such as MS Windows, FDisk, Format
  83. etc.).   This  demonstration  version  is  a  generic  680x0 version of
  84. PC-Task  and  is  considerably  slower  than the full 68020_60 specific
  85. version.   We  estimate  that the demo is 25% slower on a 68020/30, 20%
  86. slower on a 68040 and very much slower on a 68060 (due to the 68060 not
  87. having one often used instruction inbuilt anymore).

  89. The  full  package  contains  the  following  features  which have been
  90. removed from this demo:
  91.  
  92. - A comprehensive user reference manual
  93. - Writing to Floppy/HardDiskPartition/HardDiskFile enabled.
  94. - Parallel port emulation enabled.
  95. - Optimized version for 68020 and higher processors
  96. - Turbo Version (requires 4x RAM for speed increase)
  97. - The hardfile.device so you can use a Filesystem to access your PC-Task 
  98.   or Bridgeboard HardDiskFile from AmigaDOS.
  99. - An MS-DOS program to copy files from AmigaDOS to PC-Task
  100. - An MS-DOS program to copy files from PC-Task to AmigaDOS
  101. - An MS-DOS program to show AmigaDOS directories under PC-Task
  102. - An MS-DOS program to quit PC-Task
  103. - An MS-DOS program to start the mouse driver
  104. - A CD-ROM driver allowing access to CD-ROMs under PC-Task's emulation

  107. Using the Demo
  108. --------------
  109. - System Requirements
  110.  
  111. PC-TaskDemo  3.1  requires  an Amiga computer with at least 512K of RAM
  112. and  AmigaOS  1.2+.   Please note that some features of PC-TaskDemo 3.1
  113. will  only work if you have at least 1MB of RAM.  Some display features
  114. will  also be unavailable if you do not have an AGA compatible Amiga or
  115. a third party graphics card.
  116.  
  117. - Running the Demo
  118.  
  119. If you are running Kickstart 1.2/1.3 double click TDPatch1213 first.
  120.  
  121. The  PC-Task  3.1  Demo  can  easily  be  run  by  double  clicking the
  122. PC-TaskDemo  3.1  icon.   The program should load and display an option
  123. screen.
  124.  
  125. Click  on  the  START button to start the emulation.  Insert a bootable
  126. DOS  system  disk  into  the drive specified as A on the option screen.
  127. Pressing return should now boot DOS just like a real PC.
  128.  
  129. - Creating a Bootable MS-DOS Disk
  130.  
  131. In  order  for  you  to be able to use the PC-Task emulation (or even a
  132. real  PC)  a  bootable MS-DOS disk is needed unless you have a bootable
  133. HardDiskFile  or partition from which to boot.  To create a system disk
  134. (720K  bootable)  for  use  with  PC-Task,  you  can insert a 3.5" DSDD
  135. (double  sided  double density) disk in a real PC's drive A:  and enter
  136. at the MS-DOS prompt:

  138.       format A:  /s        Or
  139.     format A:  /s /f:720 Or
  140.     format A:  /s /n:9
  141.  
  142. Insert this disk when you boot the emulator.

  145. A Brief Guide to some of PC-Task's Options
  146. ------------------------------------------
  147. - The Option Screen
  148.  
  149. The  option  screen  allows  you  to  change  the  various functions of
  150. PC-Task.   To  start the emulation just click the start button or press
  151. the   return  key,  after  you  have  set  the  options  to  suit  your
  152. preferences.
  153.  
  154. - Floppy Disk Options
  155.  
  156. On  the  bottom  left of the option screen are two text gadgets used to
  157. assign  PC-Task's  floppy drives A and B for use during emulation.  The
  158. floppy  drives  can  be assigned to any device, by entering the name of
  159. the drives into the text gadgets.
  160.  
  161. People  who  mount  their drives as MS-DOS drives, so they can read and
  162. write  files  using  the  AmigaOS 2.1+ MS-DOS filesystem, or other such
  163. software, can enter the device names that they use for that (e.g.  PC0:
  164. & PC1:) in the text gadgets.
  165.  
  166. - Hard Disk Options
  167.  
  168. If  you  have  an  existing  bridgeboard hard disk file, click the left
  169. mouse  button  on  one of the hard disk text gadgets and enter the file
  170. name  (including path) in the text gadget e.g.  "Work:IBMHardDiskFile".
  171. PC-Task does not work with JLink virtual drives.
  172.  
  173. You  can  also  specify  an  existing  MS-DOS  partition  that has been
  174. FDisk'ed   and   formatted.    Make   sure  that  you  do  not  have  a
  175. CrossDOSFileSystem line in your mountlist for that partition.
  176.  
  177. - Graphics Adapter Options
  178.  
  179. You  can emulate five different display adapters with PC-Task.  You can
  180. toggle  between  modes  by clicking the left mouse button on the gadget
  181. right of the Graphics Adapter text.
  182.  
  183. MDA is a monochrome, text only adapter that gives faster screen updates.   
  184.  
  185. CGA   is  the  default  graphics  option  and  has  the  most  complete
  186. implementation and compatibility.
  187.  
  188. EGA  will  do  the  same  modes  as  MDA  and  CGA and adds some higher
  189. resolution graphics modes.
  190.  
  191. VGA  will  do  all  the  modes  of  MDA, CGA, EGA and higher resolution
  192. graphics  modes.   One VGA mode requires a machine with the AGA chipset
  193. (such  as  the  A1200  &  A4000) or with a graphic board capable of 256
  194. colours  in  order to display the correct colours.  Other machines will
  195. display the mode but with incorrect colours.

  197. SVGA  modes are high resolution graphics modes, some of which require a
  198. machine with the AGA chipset or a graphics board capable of 256 colours
  199. in  order  to display the correct colours.  Other machines will display
  200. the mode but with incorrect colours.
  201.  
  202. Many  PC  games use non-standard modes and features of EGA/VGA/SVGA and
  203. therefore will not run correctly.
  204.  
  205. - Advanced Video Options
  206.  
  207. Underneath the Graphics Adapter options you are able to select Advanced
  208. Video  Options.   This  will  bring  up  another window allowing you to
  209. select  the  Amiga  screen  mode  for  each graphics mode available and
  210. whether  to  open  a  window  on seperate screen.  The method of screen
  211. update may also be changed.

  242. - Mouse, Parallel, Serial & Sound Options
  243.  
  244. You can toggle the Parallel, Serial, COM2 Mouse and Sound gadgets to on
  245. or  off  by  clicking the left mouse button on these gadgets at the top
  246. right of the option screen.
  247.  
  248. The COM2 Mouse option emulates a Microsoft compatible serial mouse on COM2.  
  249.  
  250. The Sound option emulates basic PC motherboard sound. (simple beeps etc.)
  251.  
  252. - Memory Options
  253.  
  254. In  the  bottom  right  of  the  option  screen there are three sets of
  255. left/right gadgets that allow you to change memory options of the PC.
  256.  
  257. Conventional Memory
  258. Sets  the amount of memory PC-Task will allocate for emulation with the
  259. maximum  base memory allowed being 704K, if MDA or CGA graphics adapter
  260. selected,  and  640K  if  EGA,  VGA  or  SVGA  is  selected.   For best
  261. compatibility select 640K.  If the emulator fails to get the amount set
  262. it  will  try  for  a  smaller  amount  until  it  gets  too  low to be
  263. functional.
  264.  
  265. Extended Memory
  266. Sets  the  amount  of  extended  memory  which  will  be  allocated for
  267. emulation.   You  are able to select up to 15MB of extended memory.  It
  268. is best if you do not allocate all available fast RAM on your Amiga for
  269. emulation.   If  you  allocate more, PC-Task may use Chip memory, which
  270. will  slow  down  the  emulation.   To use extended memory you must use
  271. HIMEM.SYS.  Consult your MS-DOS manual for futher details.

  273. Minimum Leave Available
  274. This  is  the  minimum  amount  of  memory that the emulator will leave
  275. available  for  other  Amiga  programs, after it has allocated the main
  276. memory.

  278. - ToolTypes and Keywords
  279.  
  280. LANGUAGE  = ENGLISH, DEUTSCH or FRANÇAIS  - Forces PC-Task's language
  281. PUBSCREEN = (PUBSCREEN NAME)              - Select which Public Screen
  282.                         PC-Task windows will open on.
  283.  
  284. - Turning the Mouse Driver On
  285.  
  286. To  turn  the  internal  DOS  mouse  driver on press LeftAmiga-P.  This
  287. should  be  done  prior to starting the PC program that you wish to use
  288. the mouse with.
  289.  
  290. - Rebooting & Quitting the Emulator
  291.  
  292. PC-Task  can  be rebooted just like a real PC, using the same keys as a
  293. PC.  To do this, press the Ctrl-Alt-DEL keys all at the same time.
  294.  
  295. To quit the emulator press LeftAmiga-RightAmiga-DEL or RightAmiga-DEL.
