Diavolo Backup 1.26
===================
English Readme
Welcome to Diavolo Backup!
--------------------------
This package is meant to give you an impression of Diavolo Backup.
A complete english manual is available as an AmigaGuide file. Look
into CompuServe, GO AmigaUser, library 9 "Disk Utilities".
You can register Diavolo Backup using Compuserve's SWReg facility.
You will then receive a personalized executable file with your
own unique serial number. The executable file, however, needs the
files from this package to work properly.
At first a list of the features:
Diavolo Backup supports
-----------------------
- Backup to Disk
o DD and HD drives supported, disk type can be mixed within one
backup.
- Backup into a file
o includes backup to removable media. If the medium is full,
Diavolo asks for new medium.
- Backup to SCSI Tape
o complex setting menu, to support all available streamers.
o special SCSI-II commands and modes supported.
- Optional compression and encoding using XPK libraries
- Support of multiple partitions in one backup
- Support of multi-assignments
- Support of hard and softlinks
- User interface in english and german (using locale.library)
- Extremly high performance, due to parallel processing.
- Complex file and directory selection filters
This demo release is restricted. You can backup and compare the backup, but
you cannot restore it. To test Diavolo's liability it's absolutly
sufficient to compare the backup, as internaly the compare operation is
almost identical to the restore operation.
How to make a backup
--------------------
Start Diavolo Backup. Select 'Backup' from the main menu.
You'll get the 'Device selection window'. There you can select WHERE you
want to backup to and WHAT you want to save. The upper part of the window
is for the destination of the backup.
In the middle there is a list of all mounted volumes in your system. To
backup one of your volumes, simply double-click on its entry. Diavolo
Backup scans this disk and then you'll see the file selection window.
Simply double-click on the directory you want to save. All sub-directories
will be included, too. To finish the selection for this volume, select
the 'Return' button.
Now you can select more volumes if you wish. You may also enter an
assignment in the 'Other volumes' entry or select a specific path with the
'Select directory' gadget.
Now start the backup...
How to compare a backup
-----------------------
Select 'Compare' from the main menu.
You know the 'Device selection window' already. The list in the middle of
the window will show all backuped partitions and is currently empty.
The first step ist to select 'Read backup directory'. Diavolo Backup then
scans your backup medium and displays all backuped partitions.
Now you can select files and directories to compare as described above and
start the comparison.
SCSI Tape streamer
------------------
You have to set up Diavolo Backup before you can use it with your tape
streamer.
Select 'SCSI Settings' from the main menu or the device selection window.
A new window will pop up.
Enter the name of your scsi device driver and the unit number of your
streamer device.
If you've entered the data correctly, the data of your streamer should
appear in the right box.
Now Diavolo needs to check the capabilities of your streamer drive, to get
the best results. It's neccessary to write to a tape, so you should have a
tape ready. ALL DATA ON THIS TAPE WILL BE DESTROYED!!!!
Select 'Check capabilities'. Diavolo requests to insert the tape and starts
a couple of tests with your streamer. When the test is finished, the
gadgets reflect the optimal settings for your streamer.
You should also disable the compression of Diavolo (in 'Backup options')
and set the tasks priorities to 0/0/0 (in 'Global options').
Exit the SCSI settings window with 'Ok' and save the current settings with
the function 'Save options' in the menu.
Short description of the SCSI options:
Tape catalog options
- Disk, Partition, None:
Currently not supported. Diavolo saves the catalog to your harddisk
- Path:
Path to store the tape index files. Diavolo uses these files to
speed up the restoration and comparison but they are not neccessary
to restore the data of course.
- Size and Default Size:
Currently not supported.
SCSI data transfer options
- Memory:
Memory type of SCSI transfer buffer. If you're using a DMA
controller (like GVP series II), it's neccessary to use memory that
can be adressed by your controller. 32 bit memory is NOT accessable
for most DMA controllers. Set this gadget to DMA then.
- Buffer (kb):
Size of transfer buffer. 32kB is absolutly sufficient for most
streamers. To increase this value does not speed up the operation
in most cases. There are some exceptions, though.
- (Max) block size:
Logical block size. There is no reason to increase this value, but
if you want to ... go ahead.
- Buffered:
Most streamers have a built-in cache buffer. To use these buffer,
check this button.
- Fixed blck:
Fixed block size. Some extended features are only available using
fixed blocks.
Miscellaneous options
- Setmarks:
Use Setmarks instead of Filemarks to seperate backups. Should speed
up the search for a specific backup a bit. Only supported by
SCSI-II streamers.
- Fast locate:
Use Space to skip over blocks, if only a selection of files is to
be restored.
- Direct seek:
Diavolo keeps track of the block numbers to seek extremly fast.
This is only available for very few streamers, mostly
DAT-streamers.
- Update in place:
Only available if the streamer supports Direct seek. If this option
is NOT available, Diavolo can only append a new backup to the end
of the tape or overwrite the tape completly. If this option is
checked, it's also possible to overwrite the tape beginning with a
specific backup.
- HW compression:
Some streamers support internal hardware data compression. To
enable this feature, check this button.
- Speed ctrl.:
Some streamers can adapt their speed to the data flow. To enable
this feature, check this button.
