PRINTING A COPY OF THE PC-FILE:dB USER'S MANUAL
+---------------------------------------------------+
We have tried to provide you with everything necessary to evaluate
PC-File:dB. The program utilizes clear, informative menus. Help screens are
always available (Alt-H). Also, the file "CARD" on the PC-File:dB utilities
disk is a quick reference card with a summary of the program commands.
This is sufficient for most people to do a good evaluation of the program.
But some people prefer to have a complete copy of the manual. We have
created the "manual on disk" for this purpose.
Purchased copies of PC-File:dB include a complete printed copy of two
manuals: The "User's Manual" and a "Beginner's Manual." The manual on disk
is a disk version of the User's Manual. The manual on disk necessarily
omits the graphical illustrations that are present in the original User's
Manual, but otherwise it is complete and unabridged. (The illustrations are
removed because computer screens cannot display them, and most printers
can not print them.)
Because the illustrations are removed when creating the manual on disk, the
page numbering is different from the typeset manual. This means that the
page numbers referenced in the PC-File:dB help screens do not match up with
the page numbers in the manual on disk. We apologize for this. It is NOT an
attempt to penalize you in any way. If we could make the page numbers match
(with a reasonable amount of effort on our part) we would do it.
In order to keep costs down, the manual on disk is not included with
purchased copies of the program and cannot be purchased directly from
ButtonWare.
To print the manual:
* Put the PC-File:dB manual on disk into the A: drive
* type A: and press the (Enter) key
* type DOC and press the (Enter) key
Note: you can use the B: drive by substituting B: for A: in the above steps.
If your printer jams and you need to restart the printing at a point midway
through the document, or if you need to print a wider left margin, you can
enter other commands on the same line with DOC. Here is how the commands
are entered:
DOC p=pageskip m=margin
Replace "pageskip" above with the number of pages to skip over before
printing begins. For example, if you say DOC p=50, then 50 pages will be
skipped over before printing begins. Replace "margin" above with the number
of blank spaces to print at the left of the document. To print 10 blanks
spaces at the left, say A:DOC m=10.

Welcome to "User Supported Software" (Shareware).
This remarkable revolution in software distribution
was co-pioneered in 1982 by Jim Button and Andrew
Fluegelman. It has become a major force in the
software industry, helping to reduce software prices
and eliminate copy protection schemes.
+-------------------------------------------------------+
HERE'S HOW SHAREWARE WORKS:
You are encouraged to copy the PC-File:dB diskettes and share them freely
with others. You have the luxury of trying out the complete programs, at
your own pace and in the comfort of your own home or workplace. This is not
a crippled or "demo" copy, but the complete working version of the program.
After you have used PC-File:dB for a reasonable evaluation period you should
either discontinue use of the program or purchase a licensed copy from
ButtonWare or from an authorized dealer. Your support is important and
greatly appreciated. With it, Shareware authors are encouraged to design
and distribute new products. Without it, a great deal of high quality,
low cost software will cease to be available.
Why pay at all?
--------------------------------------------------------------
* You receive a CURRENT copy of the program
* You receive two printed manuals (Beginners Manual
and User's Manual)
* One year of technical support - by phone or written
* Notification of updates and new versions
* Inexpensive upgrade offers
* Notification of new products
* Periodic special price offers (for our registered users only)
* Your input and ideas help shape future products
* Access to the on-line ButtonWare Bulletin Board, which provides:
- Information and announcements (on line)
- Communication with other ButtonWare users
- More technical support, and helpful tips/pointers
* A sense of pride and ownership, in having honestly
participated in the Shareware revolution
* You help to keep software prices down, by supporting a
distribution method which doesn't depend on expensive
advertising campaigns.
So please dive in and enjoy the fun of legally sharing good software with
your friends and associates. But also be aware of the following
restrictions, designed to protect the community of Shareware users and to
prevent greedy people from taking unfair advantage of the trust, hard
work, and good will of Shareware authors. Exceptions to these conditions
must be received in writing from ButtonWare.
1. No price or consideration may be charged. However, a distribution cost may
be charged for the cost of the diskettes, shipping, and handling, not to
exceed $3 per diskette.
2. The files and programs on the disks may not be modified or deleted.
3. The programs cannot be sold as part of some other more inclusive package.
4. The programs cannot be "rented" or "leased" to others.
5. The end user must be told clearly in writing on the outside of the
package and in all advertising that the diskette(s) are "Shareware."
6. The package must contain a written explanation that the diskettes are
for evaluation purposes, and that an additional "registration fee" is
expected by the author if the program is used beyond an initial
evaluation period.
7. In the case of distribution via any telecommunications link
the following must be done:
* X-Modem or some other error checking protocol must be used
* All ButtonWare programs (and documentation files) must be transferred
in a library or archive format. That means the files have all been
combined into one file.
8. If you're copying the disks for distribution to students in a classroom,
you must provide them with the following written notice:
+----------------------------------------------------+
These diskettes are distributed to you through the
courtesy of (your school or instructor name) and
Jim Button. No royalty nor registration fee has
been paid for the programs, which are for your use
and evaluation as a student.

If you wish to receive technical support and
announcements of updates and improvements, you
must first become a "registered user." You do
that by purchasing each program you plan to use -
from an authorized dealer or directly from
ButtonWare:

Jim Button
P.O. Box 96058
Bellevue, WA 98009

You may also purchase by calling the toll-free
ButtonWare order line: 1-800-JBUTTON.
+----------------------------------------------------+
9. Shareware distribution is permitted only in the United States, Canada,
England, and Australia.
10. When PC-File:dB is used on a network, one licensed copy of the program
must be purchased for each station that uses PC-File:dB. Please check
the volume purchase discount schedule on the order form at the back of
the manual.
+---------------------------------+
NOTES AND UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES
+---------------------------------+
We recommend that you place the following command in the CONFIG.SYS file on
your bootup disk:
FILES=20
This is done for you by the INSTALL program on your PC-File:dB program
diskette. It is also discussed on Page 8 in the User's Manual. If you do not
use this command, the number of indexes that can be created for each database
may be limited to only 1 or 2.
Please cross out or ignore the references to RECORD* on pages 77, 80,
and 263 in your User's Manual.
There are some other text files on your supplemental utilities disk
worth taking a look at:
CARD - a reference card (summary of commands)
CHANGES - detailed account of differences between PC-File:dB and
previous versions of PC-File
PRODUCTS - Short review of ButtonWare products, and an order form
RESPONSE - A user feedback survey. We really like to receive these
from you.
