IV. CHECKING ITEMS IN
From the Main Menu choose Option 2: CHECK IN BOOKS. The password
is required. Then the following screen will appear:
CIRCULATION PLUS** Check In Books **
Title #
Checking a book in is a simple procedure.
The book is held and the barcode scanner is swept across the barcode.
As soon as the barcode number is read in, the title of the
book and the patron's name will immediately appear on the screen.
When the cursor reappears on the Title # line, the transaction has been
cancelled.
Books can be checked in almost as fast as the barcodes can be
scanned.
When you are finished checking in items,
press @Esc! to return to the Main Menu.
Fines
Later you will see that charging fines is a System Setup Option
which can be "turned off" if you wish to do so.
If the book being checked in is overdue and fines are
being charged, the computer will beep and the due date of the book will
also appear. An additional line will display the fine that
the system calculates is due, based on the fine schedule you have
entered on your Calendar screen. (The Calendar will be explained
later.) Press @Return! to accept the fine.
If you wish to change the fine for any reason, use the back arrow
to move to the number you wish to change and re-type it before pressing
@Return!.
In typing fine amounts, no dollar sign is necessary, but
you must remember to place the decimal correctly. Twenty-five cents
will be typed in as .
While checking books in, will the program stop and
beep if I do not charge fines for overdues?
As a System Setup Option you have the chance to decide
whether or not to charge fines for overdues. If you turn the fine
function off, the system will not pause when
checking in overdue books.
Reserves
When a book which has a reserve on it is checked back in,
the computer will also beep and a different message will appear on the
screen telling you who has the reserve and his/her room location. You
can then place the book on the special shelf for reserves.
There are three ways you could note this reserve.
If you have a printer attached to the computer and the printer
is turned on, you can
press @Control!
` on the Apple and what is on the screen
will be printed on the printer. IBM users should hold down the
Shift Key and the Print Screen Key (@PRT SCN!) simultaneously.
This is called a "screen dump" and can serve as
an informal reserve notice to be sent to the patron. You could, of
course, copy the information by hand from the screen.
You will see later that the program also provides a
formal reserve notice as one of the options from the Print Menu.
In any case, the book should be put on a special reserve shelf.
Later the reserve notices can be distributed along with the
overdue notices.
