  19.     This program is an *.avi to VideoCD 2.0 compliant mpeg encoder. It
  20.     generates 3 variation of Formats for VideoCD, NTSC, PAL, and FILM. The
  21.     input avi files must conform to the following format limitations:
  22.  
  23.     Horzontal width: <= 768 (352 preferred)
  24.  
  25.     Vertical height: <= 576 (240 preferred for NTSC or FILM)
  26.                             (288 preferred for PAL)
  27.  
  28.     Frames per second: >= 1 (23.976 preferred for FILM)
  29.                             (25     preferred for PAL)
  30.                             (29.97  preferred for NTSC)
  31.  
  32.     Colour depth: 8, 16, 24, or 32 bits (24 or 32 bits preferred)
  33.  
  34.     No audio or:
  35.         Audio sample rate: 8, 11.025, 12, 16, 22.05, 24, 32, 44.1, or 48 KHz
  36.         Audio Sample size: 8 or 16 bit
  37.         Audio channels: stereo or mono
  38.         Audio format: PCM (uncompressed) (16 bit, stereo, 44.1KHz preferred)

  41. To install avi2vcd, copy the avi2vcd.exe file to a convienient location on
  42. your hard drive, possibly c:\windows or c:\winnt. You may create a shortcut
  43. to avi2vcd on your desktop.
  44.  
  45. Double click on the shortcut. Type the full pathname of your input avi into
  46. the "Source AVI file" box, or use "Browse" to select your source file. The
  47. target file defaults to the same name as you source, with a .mpg extension,
  48. located in the same directory as your source file, but you may edit this
  49. path. Press "Encode" and wait.
  50.  
  51. Note that avi2vcd does not generate any intermediate or temporary files. The
  52. avi is encoded in one step, both audio and video, to an mpeg.
  53.

  55. Problems:
  56.  
  57.     First you should make sure that you have the latest version of avi2vcd,
  58.     (from //www.mnsi.net/~jschlic1)
  59.  
  60.     as well as the latest version of DirectX. At the time of this writing
  61.     the DirectX update (Version 8.0) could be downloaded from:
  62.  
  63.         http://www.microsoft.com/directx/homeuser/downloads/default.asp
  64.  
  65.     You'll want get the appropriate download for your system. There is
  66.     one download for Windows 95, 98, 98SE, and ME, and another download for
  67.     Windows 2000. There is no DirectX update available for Windows NT.
  68.     For NT, make sure you have the latest Service Pack installed, which
  69.     will update your NT DirectX to the latest version available for NT.
  70.  
  71.     If Microsoft moves this link, then try searching for DirectX from Microsoft's
  72.     home page.

  74.     If you are using a video capture card, you should also make sure you have
  75.     the latest drivers for your capture card from the manufacturer.

  78.     If you still have problems with avi2vcd, please send me a note detailing the
  79.     problem. Include a copy of the encoding log. Avi2vcd creates an encoding log
  80.     by using the same name as your source file with the extension .log and places
  81.     it into the same directory as your source file. I.e. if your source file was
  82.     "simpsons.avi" then the log file is "simpsons.log". The log files contain
  83.     details which will help debug the problem.

  85. Be sure to read the avi2vcd_faqs.txt file which accompanies the encoder.

  87. PLEASE NOTE THAT AVI2VCD CAN ONLY ENCODE AVI FILES WITH UNCOMPRESSED AUDIO!!
  88.  
  89. DIVX encoded avi's typically use MPEG Layer 3 compression on the audio, and hence
  90. cannot be encoded by avi2vcd if they do.
  91.  
  92. This release of avi2vcd may have bugs or limitations.
  93.  
  94. Encoding Tips:
  95.  
  96.     For DV files: (please read the "DV_readme.txt" file)
  97.  
  98. Due some issues (bugs??) with DirectShow, you may experience more reliable DV capture,
  99. as well as encoding with avi2vcd, if you set your DV camcorder to 32KHz 12 bit audio.
  100.  
  101.     For an Analog capture card:
  102.  
  103. Try to capture your video at the highest data rate your computer is capable of. If you have
  104. sufficient disk space, capture uncompressed. If you must use video compression, use as little
  105. as possible. Generally 4:1 video compression or less when applied to a clean, noise-free video
  106. will still result in an acceptable mpeg video. Capture your video at a resolution that is close
  107. to the final mpeg resolution, i.e. if you are going to create a VideoCD at NTSC resolution
  108. (352x240x29.97fps), capture at 352x240x29.97fps. If your capture card cannot capture at
  109. 352x240, but can capture at 320x240 or 640x480, use 320x240. There is no advantage to
  110. capturing at 640x480 from television or video tape whose horizontal resolution does not
  111. exceed 300 lines. Even though avi2vcd will accept a wide variety of frame rates in the input
  112. video, you will get best results if your input video is captured at exactly the same frame
  113. rate as that of the VideoCD format type your are going to encode, i.e. 23.976 fps for FILM,
  114. 25 fps for PAL, and 29.97 for NTSC.
