  2. Netscape Beta Plug-in for Linux

  7. This is a beta release of the Flash Player Netscape plug-in for the Linux 
  8. platform. This Flash Player has been tested with Redhat 5.1 and 
  9. Slackware 3.5.0 only, and with Netscape 3.04, 4.08, and 4.5, only. All 
  10. known bugs are listed below.

  12. As with any beta release, you may experience some unexpected results. 
  13. Please take the time to report to us any bugs you might find so that we 
  14. may fix them and provide you with a stable final product. See the 
  15. information for reporting bugs below.

  23. OS versions:

  25. Redhat 5.1 or 5.2
  26. Slackware 3.5
  27. Pentium Processor
  28. MKLinux for Macintosh systems is not currently supported.

  32. Netscape Navigator 3 or later, with standard install defaults.
  33. Netscape 2 does not support plugins on the UNIX platform.

  39. Installation

  41. These examples assume that you unpacked the Flash_linux.tar.gz into the 
  42. top level of your user directory. Your user directory is referred to as 
  43. <$homedir>
  44.  
  45. To install the Flash Player as Root user:
  46.  
  47. 1. Go to the directory where Netscape is located. For example:
  48.  
  49. cd /usr/bin/Netscape4.05
  50.  
  51.     
  52. 2. Copy the Flash Player (libflashplayer.so) into the 
  53. Netscape plugin directory. For example:
  54.  
  55. cp <$homedir>/flash_linux/libflashplayer.so /usr/bin/Netscape4.05/plugins/
  56.  
  57. 3. Start Netscape.
  58.  
  59. 4. Verify the installation by typing about:plugins in the location bar. 
  60. You should see the Flash Player listed.

  62. 5. To test the Flash Player go to:

  67. To install as a standard user:

  69. 1. If you have not yet used Netscape, create a Netscape preferences 
  70. directory in your home directory by launching Netscape and then 
  71. closing it. The preferences directory appears in your home 
  72. directory like this:

  74. <$homedir>/.netscape/ 
  75.  
  76. 2. Go to the preferences directory. For example:
  77.  
  78. cd .netscape
  79.  
  80. 3. If you are using any Netscape 3 release you will already have a 
  81. plugin directory. If you are using any Netscape 4 release and 
  82. haven't already done so, you will need to create a plugin directory. 
  83. Create this directory inside the .netscape directory and name 
  84. it "plugins". For example:

  86. mkdir plugins
  87.  
  88. 4. Copy the Flash Player plug-in (libflashplayer.so) into the
  89. ./netscape/plugins directory. For example:

  91. cp <$homedir>/flash_linux/libflashplayer.so <$homedir>/.netscape/plugins/

  94. 5. Start Netscape.

  96. 6. Verify the installation by typing about:plugins in the location bar.

  107. Known Bugs:
  108.  
  109. LiveConnect is not functional with this Beta release. Some 
  110. websites using LiveConnect will cause error dialogs to appear.
  111.  
  112.  
  113. Some web sites use JavaScript detection and may default to a 
  114. non-Flash page for users who are not on Macintosh or Windows 
  115. platforms. Some web sites may have a link you can click to get 
  116. to the Flash content.

  118. RealFlash is not supported by RealAudio on the UNIX platform.

  124. Technical issues and Reporting Bugs:

  127. The Webplayers Discussion Group provides an open forum to discuss 
  128. technical issues regarding Macromedia Players. Also of interest are 
  129. the Flash, Flash Site Design, and Generator DiscussionGroups. 
  130. Macromedia Technical Support actively monitors these groups, as 
  131. well as hosting a community of users there. Descriptions and links

  139. To allow us to investigate reported bugs, please include the 
  140. following information:

  142. 1) Platform and version
  143. 2) Netscape version
  144. 3) Reproducible steps including a URL to the web site where the 
  145. problem was encountered.

  147. If we need further information about a bug, you will be contacted. 
  148. An automated reply will be sent to assure you that we have received 
  149. your bug report. Due to the volume of mail received we are not able 
  150. to individually respond to each report.
