  46. INSTALLATION:
  47. =============
  48.     To install this game from the distribution diskette, simply 
  49.     copy the file "PVPOKE.EXE" to the desired directory ("\PVPOKER" 
  50.     suggested) on your hard disk and run the program. 
  51.  
  52.     This is a self-extracting packed file and running it will unpack all the
  53.     needed files and programs. Once self-extraction is complete, this 
  54.     file can be removed. However, you should always retain a copy of this 
  55.     file on diskette or tape just in case you need to reload it in the 
  56.     future. 
  57.  
  58.     NOTE: If you obtained a copy of this game from Compuserve or Ziff-Net,
  59.     the file VBRUN300.DLL was not included in the packed file PVPOKE.EXE. 
  60.     This was done to save download time and related costs. The file 
  61.     VBRUN300.DLL is available in most BBS forums -- check with your forum's
  62.     Sysop or search the BBS files by name.
  63.  
  64.     If a message appears asking you whether or not you wish to replace an
  65.     existing file in the PVPOKER directory, answer with a "Y". DO NOT USE
  66.     OLD FILES WITH A NEW VERSION - FATAL ERRORS WILL RESULT.

  68.     To start the game, run the file PVPOKER.EXE from Windows File Manager.
  69.  
  70.     The icon file PVPOKER.ICO contains the icon for you to use if you wish 
  71.     to add Professional Video Poker for Windows (tm) to your Games Program
  72.     Group or set one up just for this game. Please see the Windows Users 
  73.     Manual for instructions on adding Program Items and setting up Program
  74.     Groups from the Program Manager.

  76.     This program was written in Visual Basic V3.0 and REQUIRES the following
  77.     files:  VBRUN300.DLL (normally included), FXTLS130.DLL (included), 
  78.     QPRO200.DLL (included), CSGROUP.VBX (included), FXIMG130.VBX (included),
  79.     FXLBL130.VBX (included). Be sure these files are all located in the 
  80.     directory where you loaded and unzipped PVPOKE.EXE.

  82.     NOTE: Occasionally, Microsoft will release an updated VBRUN300.DLL file
  83.     which will correct some bugs in their runtime modules. You should 
  84.     periodically compare the date/time/size of this file to the latest
  85.     one available on CompuServe in the Microsoft MBASIC+ Forum. If a 
  86.     later one is released, please download it and place it in the 
  87.     PVPOKER directory. Professional Video Poker will use it    automatically
  88.     from then on.

  136. BASIC OPERATION:
  137. ===============
  138.     Professional Video Poker is a true windows application which can be run and 
  139.     controlled by you just like any other windows application.
  140.  
  141.     When first loaded, Professional Video Poker will display its opening window 
  142.     while it initializes itself. Next a the main playing area will be displayed.
  143.  
  144.     When Professional Video Poker starts, it will load a file called "PVPOKER.DEF" 
  145.     as the default rules and other game settings. If it cannot find this file,
  146.     it will use its own pre-programmed default settings. See the next section 
  147.     for more information regarding saving/restoring games and the default settings.
  148.  
  149.     Next, Professional Video Poker will attempt to load the default payoffs
  150.     and cummulative stats for all 14 of the games available for play. These
  151.     are found in the files PVPOKER.P01...P14. If any of these files are not
  152.     found, the game program will automatically create them up based on its
  153.     own pre-programmed settings. 
  154.  
  155.     When the main playing window is first displayed, you will notice several
  156.     buttons at the bottom of the screen. Some of which will be disabled
  157.     (grayed out) and some of which will be enabled. At the start of a
  158.     new hand, the DEAL button will be the default button and should be
  159.     used to deal the next hand. To deal, move the mouse pointer to the
  160.     DEAL button and press the left mouse button.
  161.     
  162.     The other buttons will be enabled/disabled depending on what is
  163.     happening during the game. For example, once the initial cards are 
  164.     dealt for a new hand, the DEAL button will be grayed out and the
  165.     DRAW button will be active. 
  166.  
  167.     DEAL BUTTON:
  168.     ===========
  169.     The DEAL button will deal the initial 5 cards for a new hand. Note:
  170.     you must bet at least 1 credit before this button will work. Once you
  171.     play your first hand, pressing the DEAL button before selecting a new
  172.     bet will cause the LAST BET to be used automatically. This way, 
  173.     you do not have to enter the same bet each-and-every time a hand is
  174.     played. Only the very first hand's bet is required to be selected
  175.     by you. 
  176.  
  177.     When the DEAL button is pressed, the game will shuffle the single
  178.     deck of 52 cards (53 or 54 when the Joker Wild games are being
  179.     played) and deal out 5 initial cards. If you are dealt any of
  180.     the current game's winning hands (shown above the cards), the 
  181.     game will highlight the highest winning hand it finds. This will
  182.     help insure you do not "throw away" a winning hand by mistake.
  183.  
  184.     Once dealt, select the cards you wish to hold with the mouse 
  185.     by clicking the left mouse button while the mouse pointer is
  186.     over the card. Then press the DRAW button to replace any cards
  187.     NOT HELD. 
  188.  
  189.     Directly below each card is a status label which shows the 
  190.     HOLD/DISCARD status of that card. When you first click a card,
  191.     it will show HOLD as the status. Clicking it again will show a 
  192.     status of DISCARD. Any cards which DO NOT show a HOLD status, will
  193.     be replaced when the DRAW button is pressed.
  194.  
  195.     NOTE: you can select cards as HOLD/DISCARD without the mouse.
  196.     This is done by pressing the numbers "1" through "5" on your
  197.     keyboard. Pressing the "1" will toggle the HOLD status of the
  198.     first card and "2" will toggle card #2, and so on. This is 
  199.     true for selecting a card on the "Double or Nothing Window"
  200.     as well (explained later).
  201.  
  202.     Another way to DEAL cards is to click on the card deck. This 
  203.     will deal the initial cards just like pressing the DEAL button.
  204.  
  205.     BET MAX BUTTON:
  206.     ===============
  207.     The BET MAX button will deposit either the maximum coins (5) or
  208.     your bank balance (credits) - whichever is less. Then the initial
  209.     5 cards will be automatically dealt for the next hand. 
  210.  
  211.     BET +1 BUTTON:
  212.     ==============
  213.     The BET +1 button will increase the current bet by one credit. 
  214.     This can be done until your bank runs out of credits or until
  215.     you increase your bet to the max allowed (5). Note: if you press
  216.     this button just after the previous hand has been completed, this
  217.     will not cause the bet to be 1. Instead, the previous hand's bet
  218.     will be increased by 1 credit. 
  219.  
  220.     Also, you can increase the current bet by one credit by clicking
  221.     on the "Insert Coins" coin-slot area in the upper right corner
  222.     of the screen.
  223.  
  224.     OTHER WAYS TO ENTER A BET:
  225.     ==========================
  226.     You can also use the mouse and click on one of the five payoff
  227.     columns for the current game. If you click on the second column,
  228.     the column will highlighted in Green and your bet will be 2 coins.
  229.     Click again on column 4, and your bet will be changed to 4 coins.
  230.     
  231.     Another way to select a bet is to press the "1", "2", "3", "4", or
  232.     "5" on your keyboard. When starting a new hand, these keys will
  233.     allow you to select 1 coin thru 5 coins as the bet. NOTE: if the
  234.     hand has already started, these keys will toggle the Hold/Discard
  235.     status for cards 1 thru 5.
  236.  
  237.     Please note that as you change your bet, your bank balance is 
  238.     adjusted (up or down) accordingly.
  239.  
  240.     DRAW BUTTON: 
  241.     ============
  242.     The DRAW button will complete a hand by replacing any or all of 
  243.     the initial five cards that have NOT BEEN SELECTED as HOLD. Be 
  244.     sure to correctly click on the cards you wish to HOLD with the 
  245.     mouse. If you have not selected any cards to hold, then all 5
  246.     cards are replaced by new ones. If you have selected all 5 to 
  247.     be held, then no new cards are dealt. 
  248.  
  249.     Another way to DRAW cards is to click on the card deck. This 
  250.     will complete the hand just like pressing the DRAW button.
  251.  
  252.     HOLD ALL BUTTON:
  253.     ================
  254.     In addition to holding cards by clicking on them individually,
  255.     you can quickly mark all of them as "HOLD" by pressing this 
  256.     button. This does not automatically deal out the rest of the 
  257.     hand -- you must still press the DRAW button when you are
  258.     ready. 
  259.  
  260.     DISCARD ALL BUTTON:
  261.     ===================
  262.     This button works just the opposite of the HOLD ALL button. 
  263.     This marks all 5 cards as DISCARD.
  264.  
  265.     EXIT BUTTON:
  266.     ============
  267.     This button allows you to quit playing Professional Video Poker
  268.     for Windows and exit back to Window's Program Manager. Be sure
  269.     to SAVE the game before exiting if you wish to resume it at a
  270.     later time. 
  271.  
  272.     Note: If you press the EXIT button by accident, you can cancel
  273.     the request by pressing the CANCEL button on the "Are You Sure" 
  274.     (you wish to exit) Window.
  275.  
  276.     SAVE BUTTON:
  277.     ============
  278.     Pressing the SAVE button will store the current game in progress
  279.     to a disk file called PVPOKER.SAV. Once a game is saved, you can
  280.     resume it at a later time by using the RESUME A SAVED GAME on 
  281.     the FILE Menu. NOTE: The Save/Restore features can only be accessed
  282.     by Registered Users.
  283.  
  284.     PRINT BUTTON:
  285.     =============
  286.     Pressing the PRINT button will print a copy of the current hand
  287.     and payoffs for you keep or to send in to us. 
  288.  
  289.     NOTE: any Registered User who wins a natural royal flush progressive
  290.     jackpot should use the PRINT Button and send the printout of the 
  291.     hand to us. We will then send you a free copy of Ultima 21 Deluxe
  292.     Blackjack for Windows. The hand must be won naturally and must not
  293.     use wild cards or any "pre-set" or "hand-picked" cards.
  294.  
  295. SAVING & USING THE GAMES DEFAULT SETTINGS:
  296. ========================================
  297.     Professional Video Poker allows you to customize the various card 
  298.     dealing effects, game type, game speed, jackpot balance, bank 
  299.     balance, etc.... 
  300.  
  301.     When any of these settings are changed, the game automatically 
  302.     records them into a default settings file called PVPOKER.DEF. This
  303.     allows the game to "remember" how you like to play. The next time
  304.     you start Professional Video Poker for Windows from Window's Program
  305.     Manager, the settings stored in this file will automatically be 
  306.     used. This eliminates the need to set up all the game settings "your
  307.     way" each time you want to play.
  308.  
  309.     If the game cannot find this file, it will automatically revert back
  310.     to the pre-programmed default settings and store them in this file. 
  311.  
  312.     Note: in order for Professional Video Poker to locate and load this
  313.     file automatically, it must reside in the same directory as 
  314.     Professional Video Poker for Windows. If the game cannot find this
  315.     file, it will revert back to its "factory" settings and re-create 
  316.     this file in the program's startup directory on your hard disk.
  317.  
  318. ERRORS AT STARTUP
  319. =================
  320.     If you encounter either of the following two errors at startup:
  321.  
  322.         1) "OVERFLOW"
  323.         2) "Invalid Control Index"
  324.  
  325.     then the startup files (PVPOKER.DEF, PVPOKER.Pxx, & PVPOKER.SAV)
  326.     may be corrupted or may be the wrong version. Try renaming these
  327.     files to something else and restarting Professional Video Poker. 
  328.     The game will then use its own internal game settings since it 
  329.     will not be able to find these files. 
  330.  
  331.     You should first try renaming the PVPOKER.DEF and restarting the
  332.     game. 99% of the time this file is causing the problem.
  333.  
  334.     If you still have problems after trying this procedure, please contact
  335.     the Author by mail on Compuserve or by phone.
  336.  
  337. SAVING AND RESUMING A GAME
  338. ===========================
  339.     Professional Video Poker allows Registered users to save a game
  340.     and resume playing it at a later time. This should not be confused
  341.     with the saving of default settings explained above. A game is saved
  342.     to a file called "PVPOKER.SAV" and this file must be located in the
  343.     same directory as the game program (PVPOKER.EXE) in order to be 
  344.     resumed at a later time.
  345.     
  346.     To save a game, click on the FILE menu and select the SAVE option.
  347.     This works the same as clicking the SAVE Button on the main screen.
  348.  
  349.     At any time, Professional Video Poker allows you to resume a previously 
  350.     saved game by clicking on the FILE menu and selecting the RESUME GAME
  351.     option. 
  352.  
  353.     Note: in order for Professional Video Poker to locate and load this
  354.     file automatically, it must reside in the same directory as 
  355.     Professional Video Poker for Windows. If the game cannot find this
  356.     file, an error window will appear and you will not be able to resume
  357.     the saved game.
  358.  
  359. CHANGING PLAYING OPTIONS
  360. ========================
  361.     Professional Video Poker's menu system (located at the top of the playing 
  362.     table) allows you to change every aspect about the game and it's playing
  363.     options.
  364.  
  365.     FILE MENU:
  366.     ==========
  367.         a) Save a game for later play (discussed above).
  368.         b) Resume a previously saved game (discussed above).
  369.         c) Exit the game (discussed above).
  370.  
  371.     SPEED MENU:
  372.     ===========
  373.         This allows you to control how fast the game operates. The
  374.         options are SLOW, MEDIUM, FAST, and VERY FAST. The type
  375.         of computer and video card will determine how you wish the
  376.         game speed to be set. Try the different settings to find
  377.         the one that gives you the desired card dealing speed and
  378.         special effect speed (discussed below) you like. 
  379.  
  380.     SPECIAL EFFECTS MENU:
  381.     =====================
  382.         Type of Effect Option:
  383.         ======================
  384.             One of the most unique features of this game is to
  385.             allow you to control what type of card dealing 
  386.             special effect you would like to the game to use.
  387.             They range from "no effect" to "cards dripping" 
  388.             into place on your computer screen. 
  389.  
  390.             There are 50 impressive special effects to choose
  391.             from. The default is to "push up" the card once 
  392.             it is dealt but you can select any one of them.
  393.  
  394.             The only way to see the type of effects is to try
  395.             each one while keeping in mind that the "Effect 
  396.             Speed" and "Effect Grain Size" will also control 
  397.             how fast the special effect occurs on your computer. 
  398.  
  399.         Effect Speed Option:
  400.         ====================
  401.             You can control how fast the card dealing special 
  402.             effect is performed for each card. The settings
  403.             available are SLOW, MEDIUM, FAST, and VERY FAST.
  404.             
  405.             If you have a very fast computer and video card,
  406.             you may need to change the Effect Speed setting to
  407.             SLOW in order to "see" some of the effects actually
  408.             perform on your screen.
  409.  
  410.             If you have a slower computer system, you may need
  411.             to select the VERY FAST effect speed to keep the
  412.             special effect from being "too slow" for game play.
  413.  
  414.         Effect Grain Size Option:
  415.         =========================
  416.             When the game performs a special effect, the grain
  417.             size selected here determines how much of the card
  418.             is drawn at one time. 
  419.  
  420.             The larger the grain size, the more of the card is
  421.             drawn at one time (using the special effect you 
  422.             selected) and this results is faster card dealing.
  423.  
  424.             The smaller the grain size, the less of the card is
  425.             drawn at one time (using the special effect you 
  426.             selected) and this results is slower card dealing.
  427.  
  428.             The Effect Grain settings are: Small (slowest), 
  429.             MEDIUM, LARGE, and VERY LARGE (fastest).
  430.  
  431.         Performance Issues:
  432.         -------------------
  433.         Each computer system and video card's performance are 
  434.         different when running Windows Programs. We offer the
  435.         Game Speed and Special Effect settings to allow each user
  436.         to adjust the settings to receive maximum performance as
  437.         well as maximum pleasure from Professional Video Poker
  438.         for Windows. 
  439.  
  440.         If you need help, please contact the Author after trying
  441.         the different settings yourself to see what their effects
  442.         on the game's operational speed and card dealing effects
  443.         are. You should be able to find a combination that suits
  444.         you and your computer system. But if not, we will certainly
  445.         help you.
  446.             
  447.     CHANGE MENU:
  448.     ============
  449.         Game Type:
  450.         ----------
  451.         There are 14 different game types you can select from. These
  452.         games were built from the 14 most popular games found in the
  453.         Las Vegas Casinos. When you combine these 14 games with the
  454.         ability to turn on and off the Double-or-Nothing Feature for
  455.         each game, you can play 28 different Games with Professional
  456.         Video Poker for Windows! 
  457.  
  458.         Progressive Games:
  459.         ------------------
  460.         The term "progressive" refers to the ever-increasing jackpot
  461.         balance for a Royal Flush. To "hit the jackpot", the player
  462.         needs to build a Royal Flush (Ace high straight flush) and have
  463.         a 5 coin bet. If you do not play 5 coins and you get a 
  464.         Royal Flush, the progressive jackpot WILL NOT BE PAID.
  465.  
  466.         As in the real Casinos, progressive jackpots are paid for 
  467.         from a percentage of the bets you make each hand and a 
  468.         Progressive Game's payoffs are slightly lower than those
  469.         of a Regular Game.
  470.  
  471.         Regular Games:
  472.         --------------
  473.         Regular Games a very much like their Progressive game 
  474.         counterparts except there is NO INCREASING JACKPOT and the 
  475.         payoffs    are slightly higher. When you receive a natural royal
  476.         flush with 5 coins bet, the fixed amount in column 5 is paid
  477.         instead of an increasing jackpot.
  478.  
  479.         Wild Card Games:
  480.         ----------------
  481.         There are a couple of wild card games available in Professional
  482.         Video Poker for Windows.
  483.  
  484.         Note: the progressive jackpot is NOT PAID on Royal Flushes
  485.         that include wild cards -- the progressive jackpot is only
  486.         paid when the Royal Flush contains only "natural" (non-wild)
  487.         cards. 
  488.     
  489.             DUECES WILD:
  490.             ------------
  491.             This game uses the four "twos" in the deck as wild 
  492.             cards. This allows for many more "high" hands than
  493.             does non-wild card games. Therefore, you will notice
  494.             the payoffs are lower for each winning hand and 
  495.             the lowest minimum hand is Three-of-a-Kind.
  496.                 
  497.             JOKER WILD
  498.             ----------
  499.             There are two versions of this game. One is played
  500.             with a single Joker and the other is played with 2
  501.             Jokers. Both types of Joker games use the Joker as
  502.             a wild card. Just like in the DUECES WILD game, the
  503.             payoffs are lower in this game and the minimum hand
  504.             is either two-pair or a pair of Aces or Kings depending
  505.             on what type of Joker game is being played. 
  506.  
  507.         Customizing the Payoffs:
  508.         ------------------------
  509.         Registered Users are given access to the Payoff Customization
  510.         feature of this game. The payoff amounts can be changed for
  511.         each winning hand. 
  512.  
  513.         Payoffs for each game, whether customized or not, are stored
  514.         in the "PVPOKER.Pnn" files on your hard disk. The "Pnn" 
  515.         extension refers to games "P01" thru "P14" and each game payoff
  516.         file contains the winning hand descriptions and types, their
  517.         payoffs, and any wild card information. In addition, these files
  518.         contain the cumulative stats for each game. Stats are 
  519.         cummulative until you reset them and will keep running stats
  520.         for every hand played ever with this game program.
  521.  
  522.         Change Bank Balance
  523.         -------------------
  524.         This option allows you to select a new bank balance (of 
  525.         credits). The default is $100 and whatever bank balance
  526.         you select with this option will become the default starting
  527.         balance for new games.
  528.         
  529.         You will need to select this option whenever your bank runs out
  530.         of credits. This option allows you to replenish the bank and
  531.         continue to play video poker.
  532.  
  533.         Change Jackpot Balance
  534.         ----------------------
  535.         This option allows you to reset the jackpot balance for all 
  536.         Progressive Games. The jackpot balance is automatically

  565.         There are many different "deck styles" or card backs to
  566.         choose from. Use this option to change to a different card
  567.         back. Whichever card back you choose with this option will 
  568.         become the default card back for all new games.

  570.         Set Double-or-Nothing Feature
  571.         -----------------------------
  572.         For each game type available in Professional Video Poker for
  573.         Windows, you have the option to turn on or off the Double-or-
  574.         Nothing feature. This feature is on or off across games so
  575.         you only have to turn it on or off one time -- not each time 
  576.         you switch games.
  577.  
  578.         When active, this feature will allow you to double your 
  579.         winnings each time a winning hand appears. If you win your
  580.         double-or-nothing attempt, you winnings are doubled and you
  581.         will be given the chance to double them again. If you lose,
  582.         you win nothing and the game continues on to the next hand.

  584.         When attempting the double-or-nothing feature, the game will
  585.         deal out 1 card face-up and 4 cards face down. You must then
  586.         pick 1 of the face-down cards and attempt to beat the face-up
  587.         or Dealer's card. Note: Aces are considered the highest card.

  589.         If the card you pick beats the Dealer's card, then you double
  590.         your winnings. If it is less than the Dealer's, you lose your
  591.         winnings. If the card is the same (tie), you will lose nothing
  592.         and you will be given the chance to attempt the double once 
  593.         again.

  595.         EXAMPLE: If you build a full house that pays 25, a double-or-
  596.         nothing window will appear asking you if you wish to risk the 
  597.         25 credits to win 50 credits. If you choose NO,    you will simply
  598.         collect the 25 credits and proceed to the next hand like normal.
  599.         If you choose YES, a window will appear and deal out 5 total 
  600.         cards (1 face-up and 4 face-down).

  602.         The first card is the Dealer's card and you must attempt to 
  603.         beat it by picking one of the four face-down cards. If you beat
  604.         it, you will double your winnings from 25 credits to 50. The 
  605.         game will then give you the option to attempt to double the 50
  606.         and win 100. This continues until you lose or select NO on the
  607.         "double again" window.

  609.         Pick Cards in Hand
  610.         ------------------
  611.         This option allows you to select from 1 to 5 cards to appear
  612.         in the hand or hands to follow. This feature allows you to 
  613.         set the position (card #1,2,3,4,or 5), the card's value (Ace
  614.         thru King), and the suit of the card. You can set from 1
  615.         to 5 cards to appear in the next hand only or every hand 
  616.         from then on.

  618.         This way you can practice certain hand combinations in order

  625.         This option will display the current stats for the game in
  626.         progress. These stats are cummulative from the time you
  627.         first loaded this game program on your computer until the
  628.         end of time. They DO NOT reset each time you start this 
  629.         game program. However, Registered Users are allowed to 
  630.         reset the stats back to 0 at any time during a game.

  632.         Each game available with Professional Video Poker for 
  633.         Windows    has its own cummulative stats and they are 
  634.         automatically stored in its PVPOKER.Pnn file as game play
  635.         occurs. Therefore, if you play 5 hands of Dueces Wild and

  816.         POSSIBLE "OUT OF MEMORY" ERROR SOLUTION

  819.     In the January 24, 1994 issue of Info World, Brian Livingston has
  820.     written in his weekly Windows column on a cure for what he calls
  821.     "the most important cause of Windows instability." The instability
  822.     is reflected in messages such as "Out of memory", "This application
  823.     has violated system integrity", or "Application error" which happen
  824.     even when plenty of memory and resources are available.  It occurred
  825.     to me that this may be related to some of the random problems that
  826.     users are experiencing with WPWin 6.0, so I am summarizing his
  827.     column here.
  828.  
  829.     The solution to the problem is to insert a single line into the [386
  830.     Enhanced] section of your SYSTEM.INI file, reading:
  831.  
  832.                  MaxBPs=768
  833.  
  834.     "MaxBPs" is an abbreviation for "maximum breakpoints." Breakpoints
  835.     are small pieces of memory, about 10 bytes each, that Windows uses
  836.     to save the state of a "virtual machine" (VM).  All Windows
  837.     applications run in a single VM, and each DOS session runs in its
  838.     own VM.  Windows applications may also create additional VMs for
  839.     various reasons.
  840.  
  841.     Normally, Windows allocates 4K of RAM for breakpoints, which means
  842.     that 358 breakpoints are set up when it starts.  Windows immediately
  843.     uses about 200 of these, leaving about 158 remaining.  It is
  844.     possible that in a long Windows sessions these could get used up,
  845.     causing the strange errors described above.
  846.  
  847.     Setting MaxBPs to any number from 359 to 768 uses an additional 4K
  848.     of RAM.  The number could be set higher (up to 1,177) at the cost of
  849.     yet another 4K.
