- Recently bulletin board download directories have exploded with
- an ever-increasing number of unlawfully modified, illegally
- copied, and altogether deceptive programs. The Dirty Dozen lists
- known examples.
-
- SysOps: Please be careful when posting files in your download
- libraries! A professional quality program should arouse your
- suspicions, particularly if it doesn't include the author's name,
- address, and distribution policy. The BBS community is under
- legislative threat at the State and Federal level. We cannot
- fight this threat effectively while our directories sit stocked
- viruses, "trojan horses, and cracked commercial games!" Let's
- demonstrate a little social responsibility by cleaning up our
- download libraries. If your system offers any of these files,
- please delete them and post "blocking" dummy file entries like
- this one:
-
- DRSLEEP.ZIP 54526 DELETED! VIRUS! BEWARE!
-
- By working together to fight this new brand of software, we CAN
- nip Viruses, Piracy, and anti-BBS legislation in the bud.
-
- Only an educated public can fight this menace, and I thank you
- for taking the time to educate yourself. If you'd like to help
- further in the fight for safe download directories, then please
- send in Dirty Dozen updates. I must insist, however, that people
- do NOT modify this article themselves. If everyone who discovered
- a pirated program modified the Dirty Dozen, then we'd find
- hundreds of issues in circulation. In addition, I also insist
- that no third parties accept or maintain "Dirty Dozen" updates
- without prior written authorization. People who modify the Dirty
- Dozen without written authorization undermine the credibility of
- the document, and if this trend continues, then I will find myself
- unable to support The Dirty Dozen. The Dirty Dozen is a
- (C)opyrighted document. Plagiarism is illegal.
-
- Provided that you credit your source, you may reproduce short
- excerpts (500 words or less) of the Dirty Dozen without written
- permission. I would appreciate you telling readers about the full
- document, but you don't have to. By all means, spread the word
- about dangerous programs whenever you can. The idea here is to
- spread information, not to hinder that spread. That's why I am
- adopting a liberal distribution policy. Use common sense and
- don't break federal plagiarism laws. You'll be fine.
-
- By nature, this list can never be complete. In addition, parts
- of it may be invalid. Many sources contribute to The Dirty Dozen,
- and it is quite possible that one of the reported 'dirty' files
- works perfectly and is in the Public Domain. In legalese: I do
- not provide a warranty, either express or implied, that this
- information is accurate and/or correct. Please keep this in mind
- as you read on.
-
- I'd like to use the final paragraph to thank the tremendous
- number of SysOps and Users that have sent updates, additions,
- and/or corrections to the Dirty Dozen in the last three years.
- You know who you are, and your support leaves me speechless. It
- is this support which has facilitated the rapid growth of the
- Dirty Dozen, and I, as well as anyone who's ever been saved from a
- trojan or virus, sincerely thank you for it.
