Gear F3 Detailed Help Notes
Displays to the screen in graphic mode a plot of sorted gear
ratios in "gear inches". This is (an ancient) standard
of determining (normalized) gear ratios that dates back
to the days of the high wheeler, (Ordinary or Penny Farthing).
In those days it was simply the diameter of the large driving
wheel. Modern safety bicycles can be related back to the
high wheelers by the gear inch which is equal to the number
of teeth in the front chain ring divided by the number of
teeth in the rear cog and multiply the result by the diameter
of the rear wheel.
The plot may be mostly controlled by numerous menu picks
on F1, (vertical things), F2, (horizontal things), F6 (colors),
and the values of the gears themselves on F5. The plot
starting and ending values, tick marks, and labels can be
controlled from F2. F3 is the same plot that is on
F5 under "Plot...".
If the plot boundaries are not choosen correctly then
where the gear is plotted will be just outside the plot
boundaries to the right or left. These are outside which
indicates that they are no longer in scale. To bring them
back onto the plot go to F2 and adjust the "Beginning" or
"Ending" values.
