- From a School of Economics and Business Administration to a
- University:
-
- In 1966 the Finnish Government passed a resolution to establish a
- school of economics and business administration in Vaasa. The
- school began operations on the 1st of August 1968, when the first
- students were admitted.
-
- For the first nine years the school remained a private institution
- offering instruction in economics and business administration. In
- 1977 it became a state institution and in 1980, when it began to
- offer courses leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Modern
- Languages, it was renamed the University of Vaasa. The degree
- program in Social Sciences was introduced in 1983.
-
- The scope of instruction was further expanded in 1988 with the
- introduction of technology-oriented degree programs in Production
- Economics and Information Technology. The aim is to make the
- students who choose this option especially well prepared for posts
- and tasks in industry. From the autumn of 1990 it has been possible
- to study for the degree of Master of Science in Technology. This
- program will be offered in collaboration with the Helsinki
- University of Technology.
-
- There are now eight programs leading to the degree of Master of
- Economics and Business Administration: Business Administration and
- Organization, Accounting and Business Finance, Quantitative Business
- Analysis, Marketing, International Marketing, Economics and Regional
- Science, Information Technology, and Production Economics.
-
- There have also been changes in the Humanities since 1980, the
- degree program now being called Modern Languages, Culture and
- Communication, and comprising three alternative lines of study:
- Translation, Information Science, and Linguistic and Cultural
- Studies. In the field of the Social Sciences, Public Law has been
- given the status of a second Major subject, and a new option, Social
- and Health Administration will begin during autumn 1992.
-
- The degrees of Master of Economics and Business Administration,
- Master of Arts and Master of Administrative Sciences are now
- conferred by the University of Vaasa. Postgraduate programs, up
- to and including doctorates, are also offered in all our fields of
- study.

- Premises:
-
- As the University has grown, the lack of space has become extremely
- acute. The main university building (architects W. Backmansson and
- F. Thesleff) was constructed in 1890, at first to accommodate an
- elementary school. During the war it functioned as military
- hospital, and before the establishment of an institution of higher
- education, it housed a commercial school.
-
- Today university facilities for study and research are spread out in
- different parts of the city. There has been a deliberate policy of
- transferring more and more of the University's activities to
- Palosaari. The Centre for Continuing Education and the Summer
- University have already established a centre for adult education in
- the former office building of Vaasan Puuvilla (the Vaasa Cotton
- Mill). The renovated premises of the former plant have provided
- accommodation for two of the University's academic departments. In
- the autumn of 1990 the staff and students of the Production
- Economics and of Information Technology departments also moved to
- premises in the renovated mill.
-
- The university plans eventually to occupy a site on the shore near
- the existing Palosaari premises. The planning for these facilities,
- which began in the early 1980s, still continues. It is estimated
- that the first phase of construction will be completed between 1992
- and 1994.
-
- Structure of expenditure for the University in 1989 M FIM:
- 1. Salaries and wages 32.30
- 2. Facilities maintenance 2.53
- 3. Other allocations for
- teaching and research 5.93
- 4. Furniture and equipment 5.82
- 5. Construction and renovation 0.16
- 6. Paid services 4.16
- 7. Other external financing 1.51
- -----
- Total expenditure 52.41

- Semesters:
- -----------
- We have a two-semester system at the University of Vaasa. The
- autumn term starts at the beginning of September and ends at the
- middle of December followed by an extra exam period of about one
- week. The spring term starts at the middle of January, preceded by
- a week's continuation of the exam period. The spring semester takes
- until the end of May with a one-week Easter break in between. Each
- semester is subdivided into three periods. We thus have periods
- numbered from one to six. A set of lectures is usually scheduled
- within one period, which we have found a convenient arrangement.
- The degree of the Master of Economics and Business administration
- consists of 160 study credit "weeks". A set of lectures usually is
- from 2 to 5 credits with the exception of the compulsory master's
- thesis which is 20 credits.
