- Dan Bunten's Modem Wars is a computer action/strategy (war)game that was
- published by Electronic Arts for the Commodore 64 and IBM PC (&compatibles).
-
- This is the freely distributable Modem Wars demo program. It was originally
- released over two years ago to promote sales of Modem Wars. These days, if
- you can find it, Modem Wars sells for $10 to $15 at retail. It did not sell
- enough copies to warrant polishing and releasing the LAN version.
-
- Running the program will give you a chance to view, save, or print some
- additional documentation. The manual that comes with the real game is quite
- a bit more informative, of course, but the demo has enough to get you by.
-
- The demo version was originally distributed in lzexe compressed form--this
- version is not. You are free to so compress it yourself. Of course the
- reason for this is that anyone who executes programs "disguised" by runtime
- decompression methods is an easy target for virus attacks. I suggest you
- scan this program for viruses before running it although this is probably
- pointless advice as anyone adding a virus would also delete this sentence!
-
- The demo is, naturally, missing a number of features of the real game.
- These include the ability to play a human opponent via modem, the most
- advanced war scenarios, and customization options for your video mode, input
- devices, and command keystrokes.
-
- You can play Modem Wars solely from the keyboard though you might find moving
- your units to be quicker with the mouse. I don't remember if the demo
- version supports a joystick. Since the graphics are somewhat abstract the
- game is playable on Hercules, CGA, EGA, and VGA video cards. I believe the
- demo also supports Tandy (TGA) and MCGA graphics as well but I'm not sure.
-
- Dan Bunten's most recent game, as of this writing, is called Command HQ and
- was published by MicroProse in late 1990. If you are a BBS junkie you can
- call his BBS in Little Rock, Arkansas at (501) 227-7694.
