  15.     garbo-request Mac PD archive mail server
  16.  
  17. This is the  help file for  the mail server  located at garbo.uwasa.fi
  18. This  file can be requested  by sending a null  message or 'send help'
  19. command  to  mailserv@garbo.uwasa.fi    with    a subject   line    of
  20. 'garbo-request'.  If that subject is not used, the request will not be
  21. handled properly.

  29. To contact  a human, make sure   that  'garbo-request'  is NOT in your
  30. Subject-line.
  31.  
  32. The server recognizes six commands. They are:
  33.  
  34. path <path to your machine>
  35.         If you want to use a different mail address  to return
  36.         the requests you must specify  it using this  command.
  37.         You  should  contact your  system administrator to get
  38.         the optimized path especially if you are using UUCP or
  39.         BANG paths to get your mail delivered to us.  Our mail
  40.         server checks the  mail queue every  15 minutes so  if
  41.         you  don't get  response in  a  reasonable time  you'd
  42.         better check this one out with a little help from your
  43.         friends.  You can use this command with or without the
  44.         corner characters.
  45.  
  46. send help     sends you this message.
  47.  
  48. send index    sends you a list of available files with descriptions
  49.  
  50. send file    this sends the file 'file' from the index. Remember to
  51.         use filepath name if you are requesting a file  from a
  52.         subdirectory.   That   is  if you  want  a file called
  53.         docter235.sit from appl directory you must use request
  54.         'send mac/appl/docter235.zip'
  55.  
  56.         The format for the file name  when using ANONYMOUS FTP
  57.         is e.g.
  58.            pub/mac/appl/docter235.sit
  59.         This  FTP format   is  used  in    most  of  our  news
  60.         announcements.
  61.  
  62.         IMPORTANT!!! The format for the MAIL SERVER is shorter:
  63.            mac/appl/docter235.sit 
  64.         In other words omit pub/ from the  path when using
  65.         our mail server.
  66.  
  67. quit        As a general  rule, it  is  advisable to exclude  your
  68.         signature from your request to the mail-server  or use
  69.         this 'quit' command.    'quit' is useful  if  you have
  70.         something in your .signature that might be interpreted
  71.         as a server command.

  73. So if you  wanted to retrieve '_files.in'  from nic.funet.fi you could
  74. send mail with 'garbo-request' as   the subject-line with the body  of
  75. the message being the text 'send mac/_files.in'.

  87. How to extract  :
  88. -----------------  
  89. The files   are sent   using   'mailsplit' that   takes  care   of the
  90. uuencoding, splitting, and sending.
  91.  
  92. Save the  parts into the  same file and  then remove the mail  headers
  93. from it. Run uudecode and you should have the binary file.

  100. I have included the MailSplit utilization to  this package.  I like to
  101. thank M F Wyle and H. Yamanaka for the wonderful program. It gave this
  102. server ability to deliver also binary files.

  109. 2.     FTP and GENERAL INFORMATION

  112. Files you find here  are usually Stuffit-files (MacBinary files) (file
  113. types  .sit, .bin, .cpt and .sea  are MacBinary, .zoo files are normal
  114. binary and .shar files Unix shell archived files).
  115.  
  116. You need StuffIt to  unpack .sit  files and Compactor  to  unpack .cpt
  117. files. Or use Extractor  to unpack both. All  these   can be found  in
  118. mac/arcers dir.  .sea files are   Self-Extracting-Archives that is you
  119. can run them (applications) and they extracts.
  120.  
  121. MacBinary is sort  of concept that Mac  OS likes the files  to be.  So
  122. when these  MacBinary  files are   trasferred as NORMAL    BINARY  the
  123. resource and data forks are combined together somewhat  dissimilar way
  124. as what happens when  transferring   them as MacBinary.  So   when you
  125. can't use MacBinary protocol REMEMBER USE BINARY.

  127. But if you  can't use MacBinary PROTOCOL  when downloading these files
  128. to  your  Mac you must use  a PROGRAM called  MacBinary to prepare the
  129. .sit files for Stuffit. But you must use binary  transfer in that case
  130. too. You can  find MacBinary program here  in BinHex  format, too.  So
  131. when you have downloaded the files as normal binary you  must run them
  132. also through this MacBinary program.

  138. directory called 'pub/mac/incoming'  at nic.funet.fi  (128.214.6.100).
  139. You  can't actually see  this directory but it is   there and you  can
  140. 'put' into it. After you have put files there drop me a mail so that I
  141. know to  fetch them from there right  away. And I  can  then thank you
  142. from your upload.
