  43. INSTALLING PC CARD (PCMCIA) MODEMS

  46. If you are using a PC card (PCMCIA) modem for your Dial-up Networking connection to the Internet and have not yet installed the modem, 
  47. you may have to enable Windows 95 PC card socket support before 
  48. running the Internet Setup wizard.  
  49.  
  50. To enable PCMCIA socket support:
  51.  
  52. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  53.    Control Panel.
  54.  
  55. 2. Double-click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon to start the PC Card 
  56.    Wizard, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
  57.  
  58.    NOTE: If you can't find the PC Card icon, you may need to install 
  59.          the PC card (PCMCIA) drivers. To do this, double-click the 
  60.          Add New Hardware icon, click No, click PCMCIA Support from 
  61.          the list of hardware items, and then follow the instructions 
  62.          on your screen.

  65. USING SERIAL LINE INTERNET PROTOCOL (SLIP) SUPPORT
  66. ==================================================

  68. Setting Up A SLIP or CSLIP Connection
  69. -------------------------------------
  70.  
  71. The Internet Jumpstart Kit supports three kinds of Dial-up Networking 
  72. connection protocols: point-to-point protocol (PPP), serial line 
  73. internet protocol (SLIP), and compressed SLIP (CSLIP). The Internet 
  74. Setup wizard creates only PPP dial-up connections. If your Internet 
  75. service provider requires you to use a SLIP or CSLIP connection, do 
  76. the following:
  77.  
  78. 1. Create the Dial-Up Networking connection by runing the Internet 
  79.    Setup wizard while setting up Microsoft Plus!.
  80.  
  81.    You can also do this after setting up Microsoft Plus! by clicking 
  82.    the Start button, pointing to Programs, then pointing to 
  83.    Accessories, then pointing to Internet Tools, and then double-
  84.    clicking Internet Setup Wizard.  
  85.  
  86.    If your Internet service provider requires you to enter a sequence 
  87.    of commands to establish the SLIP or CSLIP connection, make sure 
  88.    the "Bring Up Terminal Window After Dialing" box is checked. 
  89.  
  90.    TIP: You may also be able to use Dial-Up Scripting to automate 
  91.         entering the required sequence of commands. See "Using 
  92.         Scripting For Dial-Up Networking" below for more 
  93.         information.
  94.  
  95. 2. Double-click the My Computer icon, and then double-click the 
  96.    Dial-Up Networking folder.
  97.  
  98. 3. Click the connection you created in step 1, and then click 
  99.    Properties on the File menu.
  100.  
  101. 4. Click Server Type, click either SLIP or CSLIP in the Type Of 
  102.    Dial-Up Server list, and then click OK.

  105. Running the Internet Setup Wizard If You Have an Existing SLIP Connection
  106. -------------------------------------------------------------------------
  107.  
  108. If you have set up an existing Internet Dial-Up Networking connection to use 
  109. SLIP as the server type and you run the Internet Setup Wizard, the wizard 
  110. will change the server type for the existing connection to PPP. 
  111.  
  112. To change the server type for the connection back to SLIP:
  113.  
  114. 1. Double-click My Computer, and then double-click Dial-Up Networking.
  115.  
  116. 2. Using the right mouse button, click the connection you want to change,
  117.    and then click Properties.
  118.  
  119. 3. Click Server Type.
  120.  
  121. 4. In the Type of Dial-Up Server list, click SLIP: Unix Connection, and then
  122.    click OK.
  123.  
  124. 5. In the Properties dialog box, click OK to save your changes.

  127. MANUALLY LOGGING ONTO AN INTERNET CONNECTION 
  128. ============================================
  129.  
  130. Some Internet service providers require you to manually log on in order to 
  131. establish an Internet connection. If you are running the Internet Setup
  132. Wizard to create such a connection, make sure you check the Bring Up
  133. Terminal Window After Dialing box. 
  134.  
  135. You can also select this option after you have run the wizard by doing the
  136. following:
  137.  
  138. 1. Double-click My Computer, and then double-click Dial-Up Networking.
  139.  
  140. 2. Using the right mouse button, click the connection you want to change,
  141.    and then click Properties.
  142.  
  143. 3. Click Configure, and then click Options.
  144.  
  145. 4. Make sure the Bring Up Terminal Window After Dialing box is checked, and 
  146.    then click OK.
  147.  
  148. 5. In the Properties dialog box, click OK to save your changes.
  149.  
  150. TIP: You can also use Scripting for Dial-Up Networking to automate logging
  151.      onto the Internet. For more information, see the following topic.

  154. USING SCRIPTING FOR DIAL-UP NETWORKING
  155. ======================================
  156.  
  157. You can use Scripting for Dial-Up Neworking to automate the manual 
  158. steps required by certain Internet service providers to establish a 
  159. connection to the Internet. If your Internet service provider recommends 
  160. using an automated connection script, after running the Internet Setup 
  161. wizard, you can create a script file, and then Use the Dial-Up Scripting 
  162. Tool to associate this file with the Dial-Up Networking connection you 
  163. created.

  165. For more information about creating a Dial-Up Networking script and 
  166. associating it with your Internet Dial-Up Networking connection:
  167.  
  168. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Help.
  169.  
  170. 2. Double-click the Microsoft Plus! For Windows 95 book.
  171.  
  172. 3. Double-click the Using The Network And The Internet book, and 
  173.    then click Automating A Dial-Up Networking Connection.

  175. 4. Follow the instructions in the Help topic.

  178. USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY OR FIREWALL
  179. ============================================
  180.  
  181. If you want to use a proxy or firewall to protect your Local Area 
  182. Network from being accessed by other on the Internet, follow these 
  183. steps:
  184.  
  185. 1. Run the Internet Setup wizard while setting up Microsoft Plus!.
  186.  
  187.    You can also run the wizard after setting up Microsoft Plus! by 
  188.    clicking the Start button, pointing to Programs, then pointing to 
  189.    Accessories, then pointing to Internet Tools, and then double-
  190.    clicking Internet Setup Wizard. 
  191.  
  192. 2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using TCP/IP 
  193.    on on your local area network. 
  194.  
  195. 3. When asked for the gateway address, type the address supplied by 
  196.    your network administrator only if your organization uses gateways 
  197.    for routing information over the network.
  198.  
  199.    NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or firewall 
  200.    computer which protects your local area network from the Internet,
  201.    so do not type your proxy or firewall address here.
  202.  
  203. 4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control 
  204.    Panel.
  205.  
  206. 3. Click the Internet icon, and then click the Advanced tab.
  207.  
  208. 5. Make sure the Use Proxy Server box is checked.
  209.  
  210. 6. Type the http server address and the port number for the computer 
  211.    you want to use as the proxy server in the Proxy Server box. The 
  212.    following is an example of a proxy server address and port number:
  213.  
  214.       http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
  215.  
  216.    In the Bypass Proxy On box, type the names of the computers, 
  217.    domains, and ports on the Internet that, when accessed, will 
  218.    not go through the proxy server. Separate each item you type 
  219.    with a comma.
  220.  
  221.    If you do not know what to type in the Proxy Server, or Bypass 
  222.    Proxy On boxes, see your network administrator. For Help on these 
  223.    items, click the ? in the title bar, and then click the item.

  226. USING PROGRESSIVE NETWORKS' REALAUDIO SUPPORT
  227. =============================================
  228.  
  229. The Internet Jumpstart Kit includes support for Progressive Networks' 
  230. RealAudio. This enables you to listen to audio files in real time over 
  231. a dial-up modem or direct-network Internet connection. To use 
  232. RealAudio, you must have a Windows 95-supported sound card installed 
  233. in your computer. RealAudio works best on 486/33 or faster processors.
  234.  
  235. To try RealAudio, connect to http://www.realaudio.com.
  236.  
  237. NOTE: RealAudio will not work if your connection is routed through 
  238.       a local area network proxy or firewall.

  241. USING INTERNET EXPLORER WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY
  242. ===========================================
  243.  
  244. Internet Explorer requires you to use virtual memory. Otherwise, 
  245. Internet Explorer will not run properly. To make sure you are using 
  246. virtual memory:
  247.  
  248. 1. Click the Start button, then point to Settings, and then click 
  249.    Control Panel.
  250.  
  251. 2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Performance tab.
  252.  
  253. 3. Click the Virtual Memory button.
  254.  
  255. 4. If you are specifying your own virtual memory settings, make 
  256.    sure the Disable Virtual Memory box is unchecked. If this box 
  257.    is checked, then you are not using virtual memory and Internet 
  258.    Explorer won't run.
  259.  
  260.    TIP: You can let Windows manage virtual memory for you by 
  261.         selecting the Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory 
  262.         Settings option.
