CHESSOPG Chess Openings Viewing Aid and Database - Version 6.6
--------------------------------------------------------------
What it is
==========
CHESSOPG is a program that allows you to explore a large number of
well-known modern chess opening positions/lines on a computer.To run
CHESSOPG simply type CHESSOPG. All the other files should be in the
current directory. The F1 key leads to all the online HELP information. The
ENTER and up\down arrow keys and the F2 key are all you need to try first.
Minimum requirements are a DOS-compatible PC with 512K of RAM, a fixed disk
containing all the CHESSOPG files and graphics ( Hercules, CGA, EGA, VGA or
super-VGA ). Colour and a mouse are useful but not essential. If the graphics
is Hercules then Microsoft program MSHERC must be run before running CHESSOPG.
If you have an LCD screen you will need to use the ALT-S command to reverse
the black and white pieces.
To learn more, type CHESSOPG and then press the F1 key.
CHESSOPG and CHESSOP
====================
CHESSOPG is the free version of CHESSOP. It has many of the facilities of
CHESSOP but the distributed database is truncated after black's move 6
in all lines (this doesn't stop you keying in your own moves up to 200 ply).
Whereas CHESSOPG has only about 39,000 opening moves, the full CHESSOP had
146,000 of the popular opening moves as at August 1994. In addition CHESSOP
has:
- a transpositions feature enabling duplicate positions to be joined,
- a PGN-format games loading feature for loading many grandmaster games
into either the CHESSOP database or an initial skeleton database,
- the ALT-M command that can display percentage success rates for moves,
- a facilty for merging CHESSOP/CHESSOPG databases,
- a facility for splitting large .OP files,
- a password feature for protecting against unauthorised database updating.
