  10. JOVE stands for Jonathan's Own Version of Emacs.

  12. JOVE is an advanced, self-documenting, customizable real-time display
  13. editor.  It (and this tutorial introduction) are based on the original
  14. EMACS editor and user manual written at M.I.T. by Richard Stallman+.

  16. Although JOVE is meant to be compatible with EMACS, and indeed many of
  17. the basic commands are very similar, there are some major differences
  18. between the two editors, and you should not rely on their behaving
  19. identically.

  21. JOVE is considered a display editor because normally the text being
  22. edited is visible on the screen and is updated automatically as you
  23. type your commands.

  25. It's considered a real-time editor because the display is updated very
  26. frequently, usually after each character or pair of characters you
  27. type.  This minimizes the amount of information you must keep in your
  28. head as you edit.

  30. JOVE is advanced because it provides facilities that go beyond simple
  31. insertion and deletion: filling of text; automatic indentations of
  32. programs; view more than one file at once; and dealing in terms of
  33. characters, words, lines, sentences and paragraphs.  It is much easier
  34. to type one command meaning "go to the end of the paragraph" than to
  35. find the desired spot with repetition of simpler commands.

  37. Self-documenting means that at almost any time you can easily find out
  38. what a command does, or to find all the commands that pertain to a
  39. topic.

  41. Customizable means that you can change the definition of JOVE commands
  42. in little ways.  For example, you can rearrange the command set; if
  43. you prefer to use arrow keys for the four basic cursor motion commands
  44. (up, down, left and right), you can.  Another sort of customization is
  45. writing new commands by combining built in commands.
