  14. DDEESSCCRRIIPPTTIIOONN
  15.        The  X  Consortium  is  an   independent,   not-for-profit
  16.        Delaware membership corporation.     It was formed in 1993 as
  17.        the successor to the MIT X Consortium.  The purpose of the
  18.        X  Consortium is to foster the development, evolution, and
  19.        maintenance of the X Window System, a comprehensive set of
  20.        vendor-neutral,     system-architecture   neutral,     network-
  21.        transparent windowing and user interface standards.

  23.        The X Window System was created in the  mid-1980s  at  the
  24.        Massachusetts  Institute     of  Technology.   In  1988,  MIT
  25.        formed a member-funded consortium to provide the technical
  26.        and administrative leadership necessary to support further
  27.        development of the X Window System.  In 1992, MIT and  the
  28.        membership  decided it was in their best interests to move
  29.        the consortium out  of  MIT  and     create     an  independent,
  30.        stand-alone organization.  All rights to the X Window Sys-
  31.        tem were assigned by MIT to X Consortium, Inc. on  January
  32.        1, 1994.

  34.        The  X  Consortium  is financially self-supporting through
  35.        membership fees.     There are  no    license     fees  associated
  36.        with  the use of X Window System standards and code devel-
  37.        oped by the X Consortium.  Membership in the X  Consortium
  38.        is  open     to any organization willing to execute a member-
  39.        ship agreement.

  41.        The X Consortium is a highly participative body.      Members
  42.        are  encouraged    to  actively cooperate with the staff and
  43.        other members in the design and review of proposed  speci-
  44.        fications, and in the design, coding and testing of sample
  45.        implementations of those specifications.

  47.        The X Consortium accomplishes most of its work using elec-
  48.        tronic  mail  over  the    Internet, with individual mailing
  49.        lists for working groups.  Internet electronic  mail  con-
  50.        nectivity  should  be  viewed  as a requirement for useful
  51.        participation in X Consortium  activities.   Meetings  are
  52.        held as necessary, often in conjunction with industry con-
  53.        ferences and trade shows.
