The policy of Infoseek Corporation is to protect the privacy of users of Infoseek's services. Infoseek does not use or disclose information that identifies a specific user without the user's permission, except in conjunction with delivery of information to a user in direct response to that user's request from an Infoseek service.
Infoseek is an advertising-supported business and the availability of the Express by Infoseek software ("Express") depends primarily on its perceived value among marketers that pay for advertisements. Marketers seek to direct advertisements to specially selected groups or subgroups of users that are likely to respond favorably to the advertisements. Infoseek's business and the business of advertising increasingly employs customization -- customization of content and customization of advertising to users.
Infoseek will use existing and new technologies to understand the needs and interests of its users and to group users into meaningful categories. Any data is used for the sole purpose of identifying user categories, not individuals, unless we have been granted permission to do so by the user.
Infoseek is regularly making improvements to provide a more personalized and intelligent service so that the information, company contacts, products and services are relevant and interesting. In no case is individual customer information required to use Infoseek services, nor is an individual's identity required to personalize the services. Infoseek is able to provide personalized service while preserving customer privacy, because Infoseek does not need to know who an individual is, only that the individual is unique. Generally, Infoseek does not require users to complete a profile to use any of its services.
You must enable the "cookie" feature in your web browser in order for Express to work. When you start Express, it sends a "cookie" to be stored on your computer to identify you as a unique user. No additional cookies are sent. The "cookie" allows Express to remember your unique settings each time you use Express. Some examples of these unique settings include the Categories list, which displays the Categories that you have selected, and the Saved Search area, which lists searches you have stored for easy retrieval.
Users should be aware that other sites not controlled by Infoseek may also send "cookies" to users. For example, if a user of the Express "clicks" on a banner advertisement or a search result displayed while using Express, the "click" causes the user to be redirected to a site not controlled by Infoseek.
Infoseek saves user-volunteered preferences to better service the increasing demand for the personalized collection, filtering and delivery of information that is of the greatest interest to individual users. As Infoseek makes its personalized service more useful to the people who use it, Infoseek's policy is to do so unobtrusively while preserving the anonymity of the user. Infoseek's policy is to offer services that are personalized knowing only that an individual is unique thereby allowing the anonymity of the user to be preserved.
Infoseek's policy does not extend to anything that is inherent in the operation of the Internet, and therefore beyond Infoseek's control, and is not to be applied in any manner contrary to applicable law or governmental regulation.
