- * File Compression *
-
- AOL now accepts ZIP file compression in any format. However, the
- latest version of AOL software will not automatically decompress ZIP
- file archives of version v2.x (2.04 is common).
-
- To Zip-compress a file for uploading while getting maximum
- compatibility on all platforms and versions of AOL software, set the
- following variables:
- COMPRESSION type: Implode the files (do NOT deflate them,
- which is more efficient but is incompatible as noted above)
- FILE type: IF you can set this, be sure the resulting achive is
- "Text" rather than "Zip" filetype; otherwise the AOL software can't
- even find the file. (But be sure it's named XXX.ZIP, not XXX.TXT.)
- If you submit files that have been ZIPped in 2.04x-exclusive
- format, they will be labeled with a warning that a separate utility is
- required for decompression. On PCs, this requisite utility is PKUNZIP
- (v.2+, available from PC Utilities online); Macintosh users may use
- either UnZip v2+ or ZipIt (both available in Macintosh Utilities).
-
- NOTE: Due to limited library space, we must insist that if you have
- multiple files on one topic, please upload them in one compressed
- archive, of either Zip or StuffIt format. Zip is preferred, for two
- reasons: there are simply more PC users than Mac, and PCs must run
- a separate program (UNSIT) to decompress StuffIt files. Mac users:
- Two programs are available in Mac Utilities online... ZipIt (for
- creating ZIP archives) and UnZip (for decompressing advanced ZIP
- archives).
-
- * Self-Extracting Archives *
-
- We accept .SEA format under two conditions.
- The file must be exclusive to the computer type... for example, a
- program (not merely a textfile).
- The file must be large enough to warrant SEA format, since this
- adds to the size and download time.
- Do NOT use SEA format for text/GIF file groups, nor for anything
- smaller than 100K.
-
- * Textfile compatibility *
-
- A multi-platform-compatible textfile has the following features. Be
- sure to comply to avoid problems!
- ASCII: Text-only file, using no "high" characters. If you don't
- know what these are, just avoid using Alt- or Option- keystroke
- combinations; the characters these produce often differ between PC
- and Mac.
- Linefeeds: PC word processors put a linefeed character at the end
- of every line. Mac users, note: you can create a perfect PC-
- compatible textfile from any good word processor in a quick two-
- step procedure. Save the file as "Text with Linebreaks" (which puts a
- carriage return at the end of every line); then do a Change-All to add
- the linefeed character (option-L) after each carriage return. That's
- all you need to do... and the PC users will LOVE you. :)
-
- * Graphic compatibility *
-
- The multi-platform graphic format is, of course, the GIF -- Graphic
- Interchange Format -- which is easily readable by nearly all
- computers. There are too many excellent GIF viewers to list here;
- consult the AOL Graphics and/or Utilities forums for options.
- Macintosh note: If you upload a GIF, it probably has a bunch of
- code at the start of the file containing Macintosh-specific formatting.
- PC users can remove this by using a CHOPHEAD utility (it chops off
- the Mac-specific header), but you can do it too, and save them the
- grief. Use ZipIt (available online; see notes above) and pack the file,
- then immediately unpack it; overwrite the original if you wish. The
- new file will have a blank icon and be a trifle smaller in size... but it
- is utterly generic, and anyone can view it.
