  25. This latest version of the TweakDUN utility offers the user a number 
  26. of useful functions... the ability to change various Windows Registry 
  27. settings to enhance data transfer rates. The registered version also 
  28. includes an MTU Search which can aid in determining the MTU setting 
  29. between you and your local provider.  It also permits the user 
  30. to configure a local hosts file to speed up Domain Name searches. 
  31. The registered version of TweakDUN also features an Internet Update 
  32. feature which will automatically find out if an updated version
  33. is available, download it and install it. The above features are all 
  34. explained in the Helpfile which installs with the program.
  35.  
  36. New with v2.2 was full support for AOL 3.x and 4.x in Windows 95/98.
  37. A MaxMTU of 1500 is "hardcoded" into the AOL software. TweakDUN employs
  38. a unique algorithm to successfully change the MaxMTU setting and permit 
  39. AOL users to realize the same faster download speeds enjoyed by other 
  40. Internet users. The latest version new support Microsoft Dial-Up 
  41. Networking (DUN) 1.3.

  43. TweakDUN allows you to automatically change certain Windows default 
  44. settings including MaxMTU (Maximum Transmission Unit), RWIN (TCP Rcv 
  45. WINdow) and TTL (Time To Live). Basically, these are settings which 
  46. can help prevent fragmentation in data transfer using the TCP/IP 
  47. protocols used on the Internet, and greatly increase modem 
  48. throughput. In addition, you can also make changes to PMTU Auto 
  49. Detect, PMTU Black Hole Detect, and Session Keep Alive.  This is all 
  50. explained in greater detail in the TweakDUN helpfile.

  52. TweakDUN is a foolproof method to change these settings easily and 
  53. quickly.  The installation creates a TweakDUN folder under the Programs 
  54. Menu. Launch the application, change your MaxMTU or other related 
  55. settings, and it will prompt you to reboot your computer in order for 
  56. the new settings to take effect.  TweakDUN includes full support for 
  57. all language versions of Windows 95/98/NT4.
  58.  
  59. Note:  Some people have had good success after only changing MaxMTU. 
  60. But for maximum efficiency it is advisable to make an entry for RWIN, 
  61. and in many cases TTL as well.  Many people have reported much better 
  62. data transfer rates *only* after making these additional settings. 
  63. In order to change these additional settings, it is necessary to 
  64. register TweakDUN.  The evaluation version of TweakDUN will show 
  65. certain settings greyed out.

  76. Backing up the Registry
  77. =======================

  79. ***IMPORTANT***  TweakDUN involves making changes to your registry.
  80.  
  81. Whenever registry changes are made, it is ALWAYS advisable to backup 
  82. your registry first.  Use a software application such as the Win95 
  83. utility ERU or the manual method described at the NetPro NorthWest 
  84. website at:

  92. TweakDUN now supports all language versions of Windows 95/98/NT4.

  105. NOTE:  TweakDUN 2.1 supported Windows 98 RC0-5.  With changes made 
  106. to the registry in Winddows 98 Final Release, Patterson Designs 
  107. updated to version 2.1 to support this Final Release, 2.2 to support 
  108. AOL, and now with v2.21 supports DUN 1.3 as well.

  112. Installation
  113. ============

  115. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!
  116.  
  117. TweakDUN is written in Visual Basic 5, a popular programming language. 
  118. It requires the latest Service Pack 3 (SP3) Visual Basic Support files.
  119.  
  120. The STANDARD Installation for TweakDUN should be run while connected 
  121. to your Internet Service Provider. The installation will then check your 
  122. system for the necessary Visual Basic files and install only the ones 
  123. needed to your Windows\System directory.
  124.  
  125. A FULL installation version of TweakDUN containing the entire VB5  
  126. Service Pack 3 is also available at the TweakDUN website at:

  129. If you wish, you can also run the STANDARD install offline and download 
  130. the entire VB5 package separately.

  136. These VB5 Runtimes need to be installed *BEFORE* you try to 
  137. run Tweakdun. Just doubleclick on the self-installing VB5 file 
  138. to update/install.  The install contains, in most cases, the latest 
  139. versions of these DLL's available which, according to Microsoft,
  140. are fully backwards compatible... that is, any program which works 
  141. with an earlier version, should work with these updated ones as well.  
  142. The updates simply give the programmer more advanced features to use 
  143. in designing his program. This will update the following dll's in 
  144. c:\windows\system.

  155. NOTE:  If you are running Windows 98, the VB5 Runtimes do not need to 
  156. be installed.  They are included with Win98. Also if you have a later 
  157. version of any of these dll's, the separate VB5 installation process 
  158. will alert you to that fact and recommend you keep the one you have, 
  159. which is always advisable. If it locates an older version it will
  160. prompt you to download the newer one to update your system.
  161.  
  162. ALSO:  you may have been prompted to reboot during the runtimes 
  163. installation process and required to run the installation a second 
  164. time after your system reboots. This is often necessary to update 
  165. the ole automation dll files that may be in use at the time.

  167. TO INSTALL TweakDUN it is not necessary to first uninstall any 
  168. previous versions of TweakDUN, registered or unregistered.  This new 
  169. version will overwrite any previous installations if installed to 
  170. the standard Program Files\TweakDUN folder. The TweakDUN installation 
  171. will install the following files to your hard drive in the TweakDUN 
  172. directory:

  175. Tweakdun.hlp
  176. Tweakdun.cnt
  177. Sample.twk
  178. Tdupdate.exe
  179.  
  180. These files will be installed to your windows\system directory:
  181. comdlg32.ocx

  185. Uninstallation
  186. ==============
  187.  
  188. There is no uninstallation for the Visual Basic Runtime files.  
  189. This should not be needed however, since they are all Microsoft 
  190. files which are supposed to be all fully backwards compatible.
  191. If you wish to take added precautions read the readme file included 
  192. with the VB5 files and make backup copies of the original VB5 dll's 
  193. present on your system before you perform the upgrade.

  195. TweakDUN can easily be uninstalled.  Note, however, that if you 
  196. uninstall TweakDUN you can no longer use it to change the values, 
  197. which will remain where they were last set by the program.

  199. To uninstall the program follow these steps:
  200.  
  201. 1.    Open Control Panel
  202. 2.    Open Add/Remove Programs
  203. 3.    Select TweakDUN and Click the Add/Remove button.

  205. Uninstall removes the all of the installed files listed above.

  261. Command Line Parameters
  262. =======================

  264. NOTE:  This is a special feature for System Administrators and anyone 
  265. wishing to change settings using the command line.  Full details are 
  266. available in the TweakDUN helpfile. Anyone not familiar with this or 
  267. not needing this capability may simply ignore this section.

  270. Technical Support & Contact Information

  273. Please note that there are no guarantees that changing the MaxMTU, 
  274. RWIN and other settings from the Windows 95 default will speed up 
  275. your data transfer rates.  There are too many variables to ensure 
  276. the increase in every situation.  Your particular ISP, phone lines, 
  277. computer configuration and modem may limit the speed of your 
  278. connection more severely than these settings. 
  279.  
  280. In addition, general Internet congestion, a slow web server or 
  281. bottlenecks created by intermediary routers in any data transfer 
  282. situation may preclude high speed transfers.  Still, our feedback 
  283. indicates that roughly 80-90% of people who experimented with these 
  284. settings and filled out our online survey form had moderate to 
  285. excellent success with changing these settings.

  296. Known Bugs and Other Issues
  297. ===========================
  298.  
  299. Note that TweakDUN 2.21 does not support importing of bookmarks from 
  300. Netscape Communicator 4.5 which employs it's bookmarks differently 
  301. than 4.0x.  The next version will hopefully include that support.
  302.  
  303. There are no known bugs at the time of release of v2.21. However, 
  304. the following problems crop up occasionally:
  305.  
  306. Occasionally, upon installation some people may receive a Windows 
  307. error message:  "This application uses CTL3D32.DLL which is not the 
  308. correct version. This version of CTL3D32.DLL is designed only for 
  309. Windows NT systems."  There is no cause for alarm.  TweakDUN does NOT 
  310. install this dll file.  This message simply indicates that you 
  311. probably have the incorrect version of this dll in your 
  312. windows\system folder.  It should not cause you any problems, but if 
  313. you wish to find out more, see the TweakDUN helpfile or the relevant 
  314. section on the MaxMTU page at

  317. On some systems, running TweakDUN's Find MaxMTU feature may produce 
  318. this warning:
  319.         "This program is set to run in MS-DOS mode 
  320.         and cannot run while other programs are running. 
  321.         All other programs will close if you choose to 
  322.         continue. Do you wish to continue"
  323. This error is produced by a default setting in the way a DOS window 
  324. is opened on your computer.  The procedure to correct this situation 
  325. is outlined in TweakDUN's help file.
  326.  
  327. If you are getting reports of Active-X errors, this is not caused by 
  328. TweakDUN directly and is a known bug with MS Internet Explorer and 
  329. ActiveX.  You can read the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base

  335. Another occasional problem that occurs is this error message:
  336.     "MSINET.OCX not correctly registered.  
  337.     File missing or invalid."
  338. Here again, this file should be installed by TweakDUN.  If it is not, 
  339. then the problem is most likely with one of the files MSINET.OCX 
  340. depends on not being of a recent enough version.  Here again we have 
  341. a very thorough helpfile for you here at support@pattersondesigns.com 
  342. if you encounter this problem.
