- Congratulations on your choice of PKZIP Mac, the premier program for data
- compression, encryption and archiving!
-
- PKZIP Mac is an advanced data compression program for Macintosh
- systems running System 7 or higher. PKZIP Mac is compatible
- across many computer platforms, allowing you to transfer zipped files
- from one computer to another.
-
- While powerful, PKZIP Mac is easy to use. You can customize PKZIP Mac's
- settings with a variety of options. For example: use a faster
- compression method for speedier operations, use a higher compression
- ratio to save the most disk space, or use passwords to prevent
- unauthorized access to your most sensitive files.
-
- PKZIP Mac is a program for compressing data files. Compressed files take
- up less disk space. Compressed files are stored in a single Zip Archive.
- You could think of a Zip Archive file as an envelope for files. When a
- file is compressed, a copy of the file is placed into the Zip Archive.
- Putting files in a Zip Archive makes your file lists less confusing.
- Many files can be included in one Zip Archive.
-
- PKZIP Mac can compress both text documents and/or graphical images with
- equal ease. Zip Archive files can be stored on your hard drive or any
- type of removable media. Using PKZIP Mac to compress a file is called
- "zipping" a file. A zipped file contains several things. Most
- importantly, it contains the original data from your file. This is
- usually compressed (although you can choose no compression). Also
- included are the file's date and time shown in its original directory,
- the compressed and uncompressed file sizes, and the CRC value. An
- optional comment can be stored. System-specific information is also
- stored. This system-specific information causes no problems in cross
- platform decompression.
-
- PKZIP Mac can also extract, or decompress, files. You must extract a file
- to edit it again or to output it. Extracting a file is called
- "unzipping" a file.
-
- Use the ZIP command to compress your data into .ZIP archives and the
- UNZIP command to subsequently decompress it. Please consult the
- PKZIP Mac documentation for additional information.
