Lot's of stuff I want to reply to from the latest digest:

The Beach:  The book is very good, but I'll avoid the movie too.  Leonardo
just doesn't have that machismo that a leading guy must have.  When I first
saw Gilbert Grape, I thought it was an actual retarded person playing the
role.  As for the movie itself... it seems the major change from the book
is that Leo and the girl do it.  In the book they don't.  I admired the
fact that Garland (the author) had the courage to write it that way.
Hollywood is full of cowards.

Beached:  Please let there be an instrumental!

Sasha is boring:    Wow!  I thought I was completely alone in falling
asleep to the Global Underground series.  I guess it's one of those "you
had to be there" type situations.  You also probably had to be on very good
drugs...  Can I also admit that I finally bought Paul Oakenfields
Tranceport Vol I yesterday... popped it in the CD player... and fell
asleep!!  I like trance, I like good mixes... and I don't really sleep that
much!  But this latest trend is kinda boring.  I'm starting to suspect
there are some very good marketers working behind the scenes.

Orbital - The Seven Samurai (remixed by Photek):  An interesting new
phenomena - fake mixes.  Whether intentionally done to deceive, or someone
was simply mistaken, it makes collecting (and reality) much more
interesting now, doesn't it?  History is full of examples of officially
accepted truths as actually being untrue, and we may now be witnessing
future examples being born!

brenden - the mu-ziq mix of bjork's "all is full of love" is real.
funkstorung also did a couple for that song. and there's a mu-ziq mix of
"hunter" as well - bizarre stuff, but cool. you know they toured together
(bjork and mike p.), right?

i think the fbs rmx of beck might be real, but don't quote me.

the photek thing is a mislable. like that damn "blue illusion" thing. and
no, orbital didn't do little fluffy clouds, sheesh.

btw, sasha = good.

anyone have the carl cox f.a.c.t. II comp? i've been listening to that
lately and have been very impressed by the mixing. assuming it was
mastered from vinyl (i'd be very disappointed if not) then there's some
really cool stuff where he brings in bits of the next track like 4 minutes
before the current track is through. the man works fast. :)

and just to add some controversial orbital-related flavor, anyone know
where i can get an mp3 of the beached song? i haven't yet heard it and
can't find it on napster. :P

Yeah, I do think that Leo's vocals was kinda annoying.  Especially on
the first few words "Trust me...it's paradise".  Sounded like some

Trance mixes are an acquired taste, I've found out.  So far I've found
Sasha and John to be my favorite trance mixers, but I really only like
their Expedition mixes.  Northern Exposure: Eastcoast edition had some
good shit to it like the Gus Gus, Fluke, and Hybrid tracks.  I didn't
like Westcoast edition as much, but it was pretty good.  Tranceport had
a lot of good songs like that double-remixed version of Purple, though
it didn't have the impact that Kel would have hoped.  (Hey, I don't see
all of you guys raving about Orzic Tentacles' Waterfall Cities, so...)

Renaissance America is also good.  The first two songs really stick out
as my favorites.  Moontribe (Sound Without Walls) is a great tribal
trance mix.  Logical Progressions is pretty good D&B, but I wish that
LTJ Bukem would put out his own album, because those are really the only
songs that I like.  Bigger Dirtier Beats 2 is a nice bigbeat mix.
Plastic Compilation Vol 2 is also really good, with various
D&B/bigbeat/IDM mixes.  Really, I just use these CDs as a jump point for
other artist, but it's kinda hard to tell if it's the mixer's talent or
the composer's talent.  Juno Reactor and Eat Static are still my two
favorite trance artists, though.  And I didn't find either of them
through trance mixes.

Yeah, but who actually did the song?  I collect these songs, but I also
check all of these stuff on CDNOW and other discography resources to
properly label this shit.  I think it's only mistaken decisions by MP3
server guys, who get a song with missing information and guess by
grabbing the most popular guy in that field.  (FBS, Chem Bros, and
Orbital seem to be popular artists that get mistakenly inserted into ID3
tags.)

I'm impressed with some of the tracks on the "Play" album.  They're simple,
yet have some wonderful layered melodies.  The orchestral songs are probably
my favorites (Porcelain, My Weakness).  The CD is well worth the money IMO.
The music has really helped me over the past couple of weeks.

Of course, "Forever" will always be my favorite placebo.

FYI.. I rarely get to read the list as I have been quite ill for almost a
month now.  I've got pneumonia or something of the sorts.  I can hardly
dress myself as I am very weak.  I hope to be better soon.

I hope to be able to post more soon.. and with a lucid mind!

Really?  I would have paid good money to get into that concert.  Do you
know what CD these mixes come from, or are they just bootlegs?

Again, it sounds real, but I can't find any information on any remix
(FBS or otherwise) of Loser in any discography of Beck's.

That would be The Orb.  Got a bunch of their CDs, too.

Hmmm...the only example of good mixing like that is the Chem Bros
Brothers Gonna Work it Out mix CD, where they had four or five songs
merging together with various samples from each.

My fav William Orbit is an old House disc called "Bass-o-matic"
[mid-80's!!!]
A similar thing came out right afterward called "Crunch-o-matic" {but
NOT by him} But both are awesome old tech.
For my money, Bass-o-matic invented catchy House melodies and Diva
vocals.

so I guess I can say I've always found his DJing a bit dull then. Maybe the
mixing's TOO smooth (though most would say smooth means good - I like to
hear a bit of imperfection). I've always liked his remixes, but his own
productions always seems to be lacking something. It's as though he needs
an idea to get going.

Maybe I've got the wrong Caffreys ad, but there's one that was on a while
back, and I saw again a few days back, that has a remix of Rob Dougan's
"Clubbed to Death" on it. And I saw earlier this evening that someone's put
it up on Marc's FTP - dunno which mix it is (there were 6 or 7 when it was
out on MoWax, and then it was re-released with some awful vocals as
"Furious Angels" with another 20 or 30 remixes I expect). Have a listen to
that, Trym, and see if it's the one.

I thought I remember reading that a while ago.  But I also thought it was
off of Ireland, not Iceland.  Maybe she likes both.  I'm sure she's the
'queen' of Iceland, so whatever Bjork wants, Bjork gets.

Well, I really like the Xpander EP, bought it the first time I was able to get to
a music store.  Rabbitweed is probably my favourite track, but I like Xpander and
Belfunk too (I've caught the O Euchari sample a couple times), and Baja is
calming.  I haven't heard Northern Exposure, never really had the inclination
to.  I don't think I will either.

doubt that the govt of Iceland or the govt of Ireland is going to donate
an entire island to her.

city?

errrr,,,, it's a bit tricky to be sure which *is* the original version. the
Kurayamino version's on the original CD I've got and it's fairly similar to
the "first mix" which is the other original mix contender. Different beat,
and the bits are in different places, but the same tune. There are also two
La Funk Mob mixes, a Carl Craig one and a Peshay one. they are, as you
might expect, not so similar as Dougan's two mixes.

Actually i quite like the Ray of Light album!.. It's not about 'avoid
pop at any cost', Brendan! >;-D
Most of the tracks are REALLY catchy and have a good melody and so
on!..  I could hardly come up with just 10 (non-Orbital!) albums that
have THAT many tracks that i really like!..

Btw: i found an essential mix by WO recorded from UK radio..

Eh heh heh heh... the one other thing I hate about some "big name" DJs
like Sasha are their mix albums... he sequenced the whole thing ahead of
time using Protools. No two turntables business, all computer-mixed...
don't mean to kill some peoples's joy, but Sasha + Digweed have both
done that (on Northern exposure - expeditions, eg). Kind of a shame when
DJ's think they're above actually being "in the mix" on cd... :(   - KEL

And I am really sorry to do this publicly, but is Reece a bad trader or =
just slow?  Reece has not replied back to me through my last 2 emails =
that I have sent him, and has totally ignored my requests to send my cds =
back.
Regularly, I offer my cds to copy to people on this list (Brent Jones, =
Trym, Shannon Campbell and I think Michael Brunet...all of who have =
promptly returned the cds), but Reece got my cds last september and I =
havent received them yet.  At first, it was until he got a burner, then =
it was december and then no replies at all.  Has anyone else had =
problems at all?
I am really sorry to do this like this Reece but I just want my stuff =
back.

Yeah, I have fact 2 (not on my ftp, sorry).  I like the second disk better, and
I even saw a professional ice-skating competition where a couple skated to
track 2 off disc 2.  very cool.  I also really like his Siberian Snowstorm, and
the track that comes after.  Disc 1 is alright.

and when this broke into the news over here, some whiners in the opposition=
=20
party demanded that the island be offered for 'public' sale, so that others=
=20
could buy it if interested.
according some news item I saw somewhere, she had planned on building a=20
recording studio on the island, to get that special sound she was=20
interested in, more natural & clean space.
or something like that.

last I knew, the matter was still unresolved.
