Hey -

Last year at about this time, someone asked about what other bands people
on the Orbital list liked.  I began saving and compiling the responses,
and posted the results a couple of weeks later, once the responses
stopped. I'm curious as to how tastes have changed in a year, so please
let me know what your top 10 list of bands (besides Orbital) looks like.
Post to the list, unless people complain - if they do, post to me
privately.

I'm more of a Chiastic Slide man, myself, maybe 'cos thay was where I
started with them. The great thing about what they do these days is the way
they make it seems as though nothing is happening, but if you listen
closely you find stuff changing all over the place. The remix they did for
Squarepusher's last EP is amazing, the way the tempo keeps slipping
slightly, while hardly anything at all else happens.

1) I like Robert Miles a lot, although I must tell the truth and say that
I've never heard any of his other songs besides "Children" and that one
other hit from "Dreamland" that I can't remember the name of. I have yet to
hear the rest of the album as well as "23 A.M."

2) Frontside is really cool. The video for "LBP" is hilarious and kicks
major ass. But I haven't heard the rest of their album either. LOL. There
should definitely be more exposure of the Australian electronic scene.
Surely there is more to music over there than INXS, Natalie Imbruglia, and
Silverchair. ;-)

I'm pretty sure Orbital does most of their stuff w/ hardware, though if I
were a hobbiest composer, I'd go for some nice computers (I prefer PC) w/
software synths, sequencers, etc... It's a hell of a lot cheaper.

Look into the following software:

Cakewalk Pro (midi.. used for sequencing)
Reality (Software synth.. very impressive) www.seersystems.com
Reaktor (Software synth (and more).. a bit buggy but *VERY* versatile)
Cubase VST (multitrack editor and sequencer)

A typical setup would include a sequencer like Cakewalk, feeding a realtime
Synth via MIDI.. you can then render each layer of the track to disk.. then
mix them all together in VST once you're done.  I've done a few things this
way and it works quite well.

If anyone has found a decent software solution for sequencing drums, please
let me know.

Well, i dunno for sure, but my friend's Mac doesn't need to render
each layer beofre mixing them!.. he does it right away!.. Then again,
he has a DSP card, which is always a neat thing to have if you're
making music! 8) Especially with physical modelling shit like Reactor
or Reality!..

DSP for glory! Fuck MMX, 3D-Now and KNI, give us a fucken DSP built
in the CPU!! Altivec is a neat start! 8)) You can use these babies
for so much, it's just great: sound-stuff, 3d-stuff, ADSL.... Wish
Intel didn't make it revolve so much around the CPU, why not having
custom chips for custom jobs??? Blitter for life! 8) Amiga kix!..

Sorry, got dragged off a bit there, but i've had too many lectures
about the advantages of DSPs and custom chips! 8) and afterall the
AIC7880 SCSI-chip in my PC DOES take quite a load of work off the
CPU's shoulders!..

I agree on Ae's best all around work there, and speaking of great
records, has anyone obtained a copy of splitrmx yet? For those of you
not in the know, splitrmx would be their new 12", limited to 3500
copies. I think 500 copies are in the UK, Warpmart has 500, and the rest
are out there somewhere. I was thinking of grabbing a copy while  I can.
Anyone have any reviews yet?? Oh, and nice to see someone actually goes

French??) have a full tracklist?  Also, is the game out yet?  If not
now, when?

It's great really. The band, however, more of my constant pleas for
recognition of Norwegian electronic music artists, Mind over MIDI with Helge
Toemmervaag at the helm, can be classified as dark, minimalistic, arctic
ambient/house.

well, some of youse may remember the 'Sunday Service' from here in
Sheffield.  Chris Somethingorother, 'the rave vicar' held full on church
services in the cathedral with pounding techno, lasers, dry ice, the whole
kitten kaboodle.  they were astoundingly popular, & the Rev Somethingorother
was being heralded for bringing new young people to the church.  Until, that
is he was defrocked for defrocking several of his congregation.  I think

I think Marc is generally right here (speaking as an absolute atheist), and
Ive also found that Orbital are one of the most spiritually uplifting bands
I've ever heard/seen (drugs or no), but I couldnt agree that you dont/cant
get that same effect from other musical styles.  I specifically remember
gigs (or rather bits of gigs) by Bob Dylan, Michelle Shocked, & Miles Davis
having just that effect - they were probably the most moving moments I've
had at gigs.  And with plenty of others - when Cope plays Passionate Friend
for example, the emotions, and memories of emotions come flooding back.
Even Fugazi/Dead Kennedy's can have the same effect - lets not forgwt that
not all emotions are 'up' ones.  Anger is just as important as happiness if
we are going to be honest, and we shouldnt try to deny its
(constructive/non-destructive) place in our lives/our music.
