- Hey, I hate to be offtopic again, but I've noticed the sticker on my

- I guess it is all personal opinion, because Dead Cities was the first
- album that I bought of theirs, and I thought that it was just OK. I
- guess if you care for undancable industrial music (personal opinion)
- then you would like it. That was the only time I have dared to put it in
- my cd player. I had heard so much good stuff about them, I figured I
- should try again, so I bought Lifeforms. Personally, this album is the
- only reason I still listen to them. So I guess this goes to show that
- everyone has different tastes and never rule out an album until you hear
- it yourself.

- i'd have to agree with most of the consensus on fsol. a good deal of their
- stuff is sometimes hard to swallow until after years have past it finally
- clicks ... it's something all new and wonderful. i have the My Kingdom EP
- which tends toward a dark and mysterious trail but keeps a good groove
- running. Accelerator is all around good album ... and it is none
- threatening to newbies of fsol's music. The Papau New Guinea EP...which
- Lequash sent me (thanks again for all the music i still listen to them
- often) bends toward deep forest meets a little bit of industrial but still
- remains to be a very catchy tune. i think most have difficulty with the
- facts that their music is mellow ambient, storylines with a darkness to
- them ... it's not something that gets you dancing about.

- It's great. Gives a whole new meaning to the CD, especially if you

-
- Paul and Phil Hartnoll's long awaited fifth album is "all but
- finished" but the exact release date still remains a mystery. After
- several shifting release dates, the album is now set for release around
- November or January. The confusion is down to record company politics.
- Polygram, who distribute Orbital's label London Records, have been
- bought by Seagrams [the Canadian drinks and media multinational], so
- Orbital's management are unsure who'll be working the record and are
- keen to wait until the dust has settled. Boring, we know, but it's
- stopping us all from getting out hands on the album.
-
- "Everything would have to be perfect if we bring out the album in
- November," says Orbital's manager Rob Holden, "because it is the most
- competitive time of the year".
-
- A new single may be out before Christmas, though, but London have yet
- to select a track. Aldo, in typical Orbital style, the album and
- tracks have no names - the boys prefer to name them at the last minute.
- The overall feel of the album is said to be less introspective than
- their last albume In Sides, and more intricate than
- much of their previous work. "They're really exploring the technology
- available to them this time," says Holden. Earlier this year, the
- album was shaping-up to be far more "in-your-face and
- dancefloor-friendly" than In Sides, though there are
- not as many 4/4 house beats as might be expected. Paul and Phil are
- experimenting more with breakbeatsl.
-
- Despite the confusion of exactly what the album sounds like, Holden is
- quietly confident. "It's rather good," he says "Paul and Phil have
- been slowly simmering away in the studio and nothing has gone
- diastrously wrong because they've been left to their own devices."
-
- The album is relatively short [about ten tracks] and features live
- instrumentation, live drums and trumpet melodies. One tracks is
- rock-based while another is a downbeat affair featuring a
- stylaphone[?!]. Orbital prefer to work on their own, although they
- have employed the odd vocalist, like Alison Goldfrapp, who contributed
- to In Sides. The vocals have been used as instruments,
- cut-up and layered onto tracks.
-
- After two years' work in the studio, Orbital are looking forward to
- touring again. They originally had some dates scheduled for the end of
- this year, but have cancelled because of the delay with the album. The
- plan is to tour Britain and then the world, beginning in early spring
- '99. They are busy debating how to improve on the well recieved shows
- of their last tour.

- I'll never forget seeing Mark Farina spinning in the room dubbed the
- 'mushroom jazz lounge' (beforehand). It was very much like you
- describe, but all the lights were set up so that the room just had a
- subdued greenish-yellow glow all over, and not much else.. It looked

- spontaneously congeal fungus on the walls and ceiling. Weird, but
- there's not really any other way to describe it. This was where I
- went (downstairs) to take breaks from the aforementioned cirrus show.

- I guess maybe it depends on how drunk they are. They sounded pretty
- good when I saw them (about a year and a half ago, mind you), but I
- heard a realaudio show of theirs that was horrible.. It's an
- interesting combination of sequenced keyboards and live instruments,
- to be sure, and they have a coupla songs that are pretty groovy. It
- was kinda weird jumping back and forth from the hard trancey
- breakbeat stuff to the really dazed trip hop stuff, but it may just
- be that I'm not used to vibes jumping around like that in a club. My
- experience was kinda jaded because I had just paid like $30 to see
- dubtribe, and they cancelled because of their honeymoon and they got
- cirrus as a last-minute replacement. It was even before their first
- album came out, and nobody knew any of the songs or even really who
- they were. And also, it was definitely weird watching them rock out
- on the stage to 'break in' while the female vocal stuff is going on
- (give us a break, etc) and thinking, so, like, uh, where's the
- singer? In other words, it's a decent show, but not for $30...

- I was talking to Josh last night in between sets that he was spinning at
- Fluid here in Philly. We were at the bar and he recommended a nice
- Hefeweitzen. I was a little inebrieated but I thought the stuff he was
- spinning was pretty cool, not sure of the artists but it would appeal to

-
- Hey all!
-
- I'm normally a lurker, but I just had to write in and brag a bit, because I
- actually found a sealed copy of the Radiccio CD here in Vancouver (HMV on
- Robson for those who'd like to know)! Now that I've actually heard the gem, I'd
- like to share a brief review:
-
- Halcyon, the original version, is not very different from Halcyon+On+On, just
- sort of rearranged a bit, so don't feel too bad that your life won't be
- complete until you hear it...
- However, the two B-sides, The Naked and the Dead, and Sunday, are WICKED! Well
- worth the inflated price I paid to get that little 3-tracker.
-
- End of review.
-
- Rambling rant:
- Finding this disc made me think of the recent discussion regarding the trading
- of Orbital songs over the internet and how some people don't agree with this
- practice because it deprives the band/label of royalties. Someone brought up
- the idea of how royalties are not paid on used CD's (although failed to mention
- that a royalty has already been paid on each disc). All this got me to
- thinking: yes Orbital are gods, and they deserve our utmost respect, and we
- shouldn't rip them off. However, if Orbital were truly concerned with earning
- royalties, wouldn't they realize that they have a huge fan base and could earn
- a lot of royalties simply by reissuing all their deleted singles? How many fans
- on this list actually own a copy of Omen or Mutations? Small number, I'm
- afraid. How many would buy them instantly if they were reissued? Virtually all
- of them. Want to double your royalties? Reissue the old singles in double-pack
- format, thereby forcing your fans to buy both halves in order to obtain all the
- mixes and b-sides. If Mutuations were reissued on two CDs (mirroring the
- original 12"ers) instead of the original one, I'd certainly buy both (although
- it wouldn't be my preference, a precedent has certainly been set by the
- triple-pack Satan Live).
-
- Oh yeah, one other thing: if anyone out there has any extra copies of Chime,
- Omen, Mutations, Radiccio 2, etc., you now have my address. I'm waiting for
- your letters... hee hee hee!
-
- Thanks for reading,
