    For anyone in the southeast US looking for a fun evening with (gasp)
real DJ's, there's an 'event' called Lords of the Realms next weekend
(14th i think, i can get the info) in Atlanta. Paul Oakenfold and
Dave Ralph(cream resident) are going to be there. It's supposed to be
something like the best of each genre. Sniper and Mystical Influence
(from toronto i think) (also the newest urban takeover members) for
jungle. Czech (also canadian, i think) for funky breaks, and some LA
trance guy I can't remember. Most of them I'm not particularly
interested in, but it's not often Paul Oakenfold comes 3 hours from
my house..

Eye Q was Sven Vath recording label, set up back in the early ninties
I think. It has released LOADS of great stuff, mainly early-germanic
type trance stuff....see Sven Vath Accident in Paradise for the
perfect example. Two other releases of particular note are the
compliations of Eye Q stuff called Behind the Eye Vol I and Vol II. I
have been searching for these CD's for 4 years and have finally got
myself a copy. If your into early 1991 trance then try and find these
compilations...I can't recommend them highly enough. Eye Q itself
fell too pieces last year when Sven Vath left the label. The German
and USA based labels both folded, but the UK branch continued.
Thats all I know......

...and if anyone wants some seriously warped electronics from the
early 80s, try Nash The Slash from Toronto. He was famous(?) for
covering metal and surf-pop in a gothic death-horror style, but his
music was all done on grungey synths and beatboxes, plus heavily
fuzzed violin/mandolin. He sounds like no-one else, and he's still
going! A true innovator, with a great sense of humour.

    oh yeah.........
        What would you categorize Orbital as? Is it Techno,
Trance, or what? or is it just plain and pure Orbital? Stange..  What
other folks sound just like Orbital? i recently fell in love with

Well what else can I say, they invented live non cheating shows, they have
always been one of the most innovative bands on the planet and Graham Massey
is a genius, the only track I think should be on here that isn't is Army of
Me which they did with Bjork although that was probably only Massey who did
that, as for a compilation its great I think they got all the tracks off the
masters because all they all still sound so freash its unbelieveable that
some are 10 years old.
If you like this type of music then go buy now, sell your soul,l sell your
car, because they dont get better that this :)

I think it's safe to say that RDJ's sound is unique, I wouldn't compare
him to Orbital. The album you MUST get is Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient
Works 85-92.

To my limited knowledge, there's no one that reminds me of Orbital, but
sometimes I hear Kraftwerk's influence in Orbital's music, which could
be expected I guess. I think they have a lot of different elements, from
techno to trance, electro, some jungle and ambient, with their own
flavor mixed in there, but you could spend a long time dissecting each
album and analyzing every track. I'll let someone else offer something
more definitive.

Excellent. I can't fault any of the four tracks. The Surgeon mix is
incredible, not at all the hard-as-nails techno I expected, just a loud
drone really, but I love it! The mu-ziq mix is sort-of jungly (i.e. as
jungly as Mike Paradinas' stuff ever really gets), the Mogwai mix is very
dark and brooding, not techno or whatever, but I love it anyway. The Kevin
Shields mix is amazing too, very long and loud and excellent.
The remix album ('Kicking a dead pig') has the Surgeon and Mogwai remixes
on it, and several others, and is excellent too, especially Arab Strap's
"Gwai on 45".
I'm so pleased I bought it.

Wow. Aphex twin lovers, you`ve gotta try this! "Boards of canada: music
has the right to children", on warp records.

Madness similar to RDJ`s drives this music, but it has a somewhat
different style, a small tendency (not big but still) towards
stereolabish sound, and real interesting older-sounding synths... I've
heard they've been influenced by childrens programs (a la sesame street,
like) among others..... Oh I know, this is not telling much, but you have
to know that this is totally unique-sounding...

Okay so if you were to mix 50% of Aphex twin, 15% Stereolab, 15% Prodigy,
and some Skinny puppy maybe too, well you'd be halfway to boards of
canada.

I really really recommend that you get your local store to unwrap you a
copy so you can look up some songs... I`d warmly recommend 12 and 6 to
begin with, listen to the whole of 12 it`s real nice... Everyone I`ve got
to listen to it wore some sort of charmed idiotic smile as they heard the
lady counting... one. two. three. four. etc etc... Try it! For lovers of
madness.

And as a totally useless addition to this email: I've finally found peel
session, yipee!

oh and btw we've been discussing about what good canadian techno there
is... Well I've heard that this is a scottish band, no idea why they say
canada in their name. Oh and I've also heard that they're pretty crazy in
the head the guys who make that music, and that one of the three actually
had to leave the project when he was interned in an asylum... I can
believe that, and you will after you've listend to Music Has a Right to
Children!

appropriate as we're all hungry for more good music, and Orbital can't
possibly satisfy all our needs with one album per two years (It'd take
one per month or two months I'd say).  :)

As far as I'm aware they both sample it from an MK track, but he may have
sampled it himself. Beltram and Orbital both reversed it, I think.

Now that you mention it, in the beginning of the Ray Keith Mutation of
'Chime', the sample is reversed and sped up.  I wonder if this is what the
'original' sample sounds like?  If anyone (Steve) knows for sure or can
find out where it came from, I'm really curious.  Also, where can I find
the MK track it is used in, and who is MK?

hey all--picked up the new massive attack album and "jelly tones" by ken ishii
the other day (just realized tricky's new album's either out or due out
soon....anyone heard it yet?)   anyway, the MA album's brilliant--i wasn't
sure what to think of it at first, but it's steadily growing on me, not unlike
a fungus.  as for jelly tones, any of you who liked the brown album and/or
sniv, i highly recommend this to--very similar stylistically, but a little
more minimal, and dancier.

Marc Kinchen, used to be Kevin Saunderson (Inner City, Reese Project)'s
engineer. His most famous work is probably the remixes of Nightcrawlers'

a fabulous for orbital and underworld fans:

friday night, party zone:  belfast/wasted

i could tape the both ful.  belfast i got the first minute or so not...

and about halcyon: the vid displays the following at the end:

halcyon
1) peaceful, gentle and calm
2) greek myth, a fabulous bird
3) hypnotic sleeping pill.  side effects: a sense of detachment, possible
psychosis

halcyon days
1) a fortnight of calm during the winter solstice
2) a period of peace and happiness.

kinda explains all options?  i have to say: with the knowledge of rumours
that the brothers' mother had a bad experience with halcyon makes the vid
kinda frightening...  if you see someone imagining people coming out of the
drain, uh...

man, i'm hungry for some of those plates and cups eh ;)


now i'm sure this is my music: i get goose skin, my eyes start to get weary,
i feel emotional...  this is goooood stuff...

PS: ah, and aphex twin and the orb's little fluffy clouds were on also, and
i taped them also...  in fact, fluffy coulds came right behind halcyon...

Hey guys......
A year ago today I got my first orbital CD. In Sides. I only remember the date 'cuz I picked up my Lollapalooza tickets that day, and they print the date you pick them up on the ticket. Anyway.. I got my Lolla tickets 'cuz I wanted to go for the sake of going. And I got In Sides 'cuz I wanted to know the work of one group there well.. I was either gonna go with Orbital or Tool... Coulda been scary if I'd become Tool obsessed instead of Orbital.. but anyway..

I'd never really heard any orbital before that day.. I'd seen the box on muchmusic, but decided it was too freaky for me.. and I'd heard the saint a million times.. but nothing more..

So I figured I'd get some orbital.. picked up in sides 'cuz it looked pretty.. (honest).. and I took it home.. and put it in.. from the MOMENT tgwtsihh started, I was hooked.

Just under a month after that, I saw the brothers live at Lolla.. and it was just the most incredibe night of my life.. I still have my glowtoys and whistle (sorry people-like-me haters) from that night hanging on the wall by my desk.. and I have my signed program in my sketch book (ticket is *somewhere* in my room) and I still remember exactly what I was wearing and what my hair was like.. and that I was in the front row.. and shannon was with me.. (she had the nerve to say orbital was 'boring' live)... and I remember the pictures on the video screens.. and that damn blue light in my eyes the whole time.. and having to beg $1.50 off strangers to get my shirt.. and when I think hard enough I can run bits of the set through my mind.. perfect night..

That night just added to my obsession.. I *knew* I'd hit something special.. and I'd never ever give up on it.. I lose interest in most groups real fast.. but here I am a year later.. probably more obsessed than ever.. (but is that a good thing or a bad thing?)

I joined the list pretty much right after I got in sides.. and I know I was a little shit disturber back then (sorry).. and maybe I still am.. but the core group of you guys (lessee... steve price, dose, jon romley, ian moore... ummm... all the regs) are like family to me now.. thanks for puttin up with me guys..

Anyway.. here's to orbital and having more great music from them in the future.. I don't care how long the new album takes, as long as it's great.. it would be nice to have it before I'm off to university though (one more year.. woohoo)

My neighbour has that Help compilation and he's really frustrated he
never got his hands on the tracklist. The track you are mentioning is
in fact "Adnan's" from In Sides, and it's pretty much the same version
except you have a Bosnian guy talking in the very begining, speaking
in english of course, but with a lousy accent. I prefer the 'clean' version
off of In Sides. If you're going to buy the Help compilation for the sake
of helping the children of war go right ahead, but if you're getting it for
the music's worth....you'd be better off with something else.

So, you're all hooked on Mezzanine now, huh ? Well I just
downloaded it yesterday night so I can check out what the whole fuss
is about. I was never a Massive Attack fan, I only know of Unfinished
Sympathy (is that the name, or is it Symphony?), and remember it
being played in key moments in the movie Sliver ;-).

np: 2 Bad Mice - Bombscare, original version. Stumbled at this one
in the same site where the MA album was... I love this track because
there's a short edit on the Renaissance compilation.
