- I have the LP version of MoN, and the track order is different (and better
- in my opinion). Otono belongs next to Style. I think the 4 sides break up
- the album very well. Different sides for a different mood (like In Sides!)

- Just a quickie note to say I picked up the Golden Girls Kinetic '98 CD
- single today (finally!). It's good stuff! Not often you get to hear a single
- containing remixes of an Orbital remix of a track... and a Hybrid mix to
- boot. (for those not familiar, go to the "Collaborations" section of the
- Discography page on the www.loopz.co.uk web page for the confusing details
- on this release)
-
- If anyone's interested, it only costs $7 shipped from the UK, and that was
- to me in the US, straight from the label. ( www.distinctiverecords.com ) It
- only took about 7 days from the day I ordered it, too. Groovy.

- Second choice would be Impact, but only LIVE..... specifically the version

- I would play some Vogon poetry. I can't get enough of that stuff.
- Seriously, though, this is a *very* difficult question. If you got to
- play one song that the entire world heard, what would it be? You can't
- just immediately say you would play your favourite song, because it
- probably wouldn't mean much to most people.
-
- I think I would play u-ziq - Goodbye, Goodbye, because it would be

- ironic, because that's the song I probably would play for the planet.

- It's called The Box (Breadbox mix) by "Inner Vision of KFMF", atleast that's the name it had
- when i found it *somewhere* some 3 years ago! <:-)
- I *assume* it's from some Orbital Remix compo, not an "official" remix!.. Steve, can you confirm
- that?
- From what i see it's called the breadbox remix because the arrangement is typical for a classic
- funky c64-tune (Laxity, Drax, Mitch & Dane etc) with all the scaling etc!.. Assumably done by
- someone who once did/still does or atleast loves SID-Music! 8)
-
- I got the full thing (i think), it's 128kbps and 3:20 long, if you need it (or some example SIDs
- maybe? 8) lemme know..
-
- It's cool, no matter if it's official or not, i like the funkyness about it! 8)

- Surely 'Choice' is the best 'Message' song Orbital have done...and

- Deekay was sort of right :-)
- It is in fact written by a mod musician, although AFAIK he never wrote stuff
- on c-64, I could be wrong, but he doubtless got some influence from some
- other c-64 people.
- Its Maelcum (of the Kosmic Free Music Foundation) remixing the Box - I'm not
- sure about the breadbox part tho..? In any case it might be downloadable
- from thier website (www.kosmic.org - seems to be down now so I can't check).
- Its from 1996, so you can't get it from their mp3.com pages - I believe
- those only go back to 1998. I do have the original module, its XM format. If
- you can't find it otherwise let me know I can e-mail it to you. (would be a
- 400K attachment) I would post it on a webpage but prodigy doesnt have any
- way to securely upload files to the web pages (ftp only!! how stupid), and I
- have no other webspace at the moment.
-
- PH34R MY R33t M0d skillz !!! :-P
-
- So funny you should post this right now, I got a mod player recently that
- works in win2k so I've been listening to a lot of this stuff over again :-)
- It always amazes me how good this stuff is, even when its so lo-tech.
-
- If you are curious about this stuff also check out Tokyo Dawn (also on
- mp3.com), www.mono211.com, hmm some others that I cant remember :-/

-
- Anyway, did anyone else see them playing this live??
-
- It doesn't immediately (from that one play I've heard so far) lend itself to

-
- Also, found out that apparently Orbital joined up with Lenny Kravitz &

-
- That's the most likely explanation...
-
- ...There's an item on E-bay
- basically a collection of Madonna live tracks, and the first track says:

- "1. Ray of Light (live with L. Kravitz & Orbital Mtv Video Awards 1998)"

- initially, i would obey my conscience and nominate

- I didn't want to listen to it until I had the CD in my hands but here I am
- downloading it from Napster. I will allow myself to listen to the promo
- version of Tootled, Tension, and Last Thing because I had heard those
- already. I highly doubt I can resist listening to the whole thing until
- early May (that's when I would get it since I doubt they will release it in

-
- Does anyone else have this dilemma? Should I wait for the cd itself?

- I had a question: is this song being played on the radio anywhere (most

- What are the UK rules?
-
- >8^)
- The only ones I know about are:
-
- 1. All singles issues MUST be, at minimum, 0.5 songs long, maximum of 3.
-
- 2. No single can have any affiliation with Sinn Fenn or that angry bald girl.
-
- 3. When eaten, the single must not taste better than the average shepards'
- pie.
-
- 4. The single can contain no images of any women who look like they might
- be from California {i.e. No Sluts!} v. 2.1 adds women who look like they
- might be from Florida or go to either place a lot on break.
-
- 5. Must pass Buckingham Artistic Readiness Forum {B.A.R.F} test,
- where all content, aural or visual, can not make her majesty loose
- her royal cookies. There were never any official UK singles for any
- Wierd Al Yankovic albums.

- Essentially, no more than 4 songs (or is it 3 now?), not lasting more than
- 20 minutes... Oh, but nowadays, it seems to be common-place to include an
- MPEG (or Quicktime) video of the single as well (cheers!).
-
- Also, there are to be no more than 3 formats of a single, with most opting
- for 2xCD singles and one cassingle...
-
- ...Whereas in the US, they are allowed to put all songs off both CD singles
- onto one... <sigh>
-
- (I'm probably wrong in some of the facts above - this is just from memory...
- Apologies in advance)

- Warning Warning review of Altogether. Do not read if you want the album to
- be a surprise.
-
-
-
- Hey everyone
- I'll try not to be too extensive and give everything away, but I have to
- give my first impressions.
-
- Just finished listening to Altogether and I am overcome by disappointment
- but yet in many ways, happy. It's probably their worst album since some of
- it falls into the worst music I have ever heard category. Is tootled
- supposed to be a joke? It sounds like something that some dipshit made with
- the sampler that his parents bought him for his birthday. What a mockery of
- an amazing Tool song. Tension is unlistenable it is so bad. Did they
- seriously make this? However, Pay Per View is totally incredible. It's not
- their best work, but it definitly stands out and hits my Orbital top 15
- list. It's a cool, funky track that has excellent vocals. Last thing is
- like a good old school dance track. A very nice touch. Funny break is
- pretty good, it lived up to my expectations. Doctor is cool just because
- it's Doctor Who. And meltdown starts off as a poor attempt at drum and
- bass, but turns into a totally amazing track. Now that's what Orbital
- sounds like. Epic bliss. As for all the songs that I didn't mention, I
- felt that there was not reason to mention them. They weren't that great,
- but they weren't as bad as Tootled or Tension If I had to rate the album
- out of ten, I would probably give it a 4 because the first and third tracks
- are just so absolutely horrible that they make me not want to buy this
- album. However, Pay Per View and Meltdown are so good that I probably will
- have to. And, I really doubt that the stuff I don't like will grow on me,
- because it is some of the worst music I have ever heard. Oh well, I kind of
- expected this and I guess 5 out of 11 ain't that bad. I am just happy that
- there is something on it that I like. I have been more eager about the new
- Autechre and Boards of Canada all along anyway.
-
- Well, I hope no one read this who didn't want to read this, I just had to
- voice my opinion.

-
- Here is my take on the album track by track:
-
- Tension: Total chaos, mind bending, gutsy, original. I like it a lot I
- think Tootled would have been a better intro into the cd though. Does the
- beginning of this song remind you of some spots of Meltdown?
-
- Funny Break: I didn't know what to expect because I had heard the remix that
- was floating around on the net.. but I think this song is pure beauty. I
- love how the vocal samples are layered on top of one another just PERFECTLY.
- I'm hoping all pop songs will sound like this in the future (I might
- actually listen to the radio again). Does anyone know what the lyrics are
- here?
-
- Oi!: This song will have to grow on me. I feel like there aren't enough
- changes and it is a bit minimal for my tastes. It sounds like a dance song
- but it just isn't loud or pounding like a dance song. I really like the
- intro to it though...
-
- Pay Per View: Another song that will have to grow on me. I'm glad some
- people totally dig this song. It's enjoyable and the bass (is that a real
- bass?) guitar sounds funky enough but again I think there isn't enough going
- on to keep my interest. I'm glad they added the vocal to the song it fits
- well. (about one minute into the track it really reminds me of I Don't Know
- You People)
-
- Tootled: I think this song rocks and it would sound great played really loud
- on a nice stereo system. I think this should be played on the radio here in
- the US - people will dig it a lot. I'm so glad to finally hear a cd quality
- version of this song.
-
- Last Thing: To me this is classic Orbital with updated instrumentation. I
- love this song!
-
- Doctor Who: I'm glad this version is a bit different than the live versions
- I've heard over the year or so. It moves along quite nicely and sounds very
- polished. I would have liked a new song in its place instead though.
-
- Shadows: The samples are haunting. The track has a constant flowing feel to
- it which I like a lot. Very unique sounding!!
-
- Waving Not Drowning: Playful sounding song with a lot going on. Right
- before the "Way Out" sample I hear a hint of what I thought a piece of The
- Visit sounded like. Sort of reminds me of a happy hippie version of Spare
- Parts Express.
-
- Illuminate: The music is great! This is the closest to a pop song as I've
- heard from Orbital but it was surprisingly good. I had no idea what to
- expect of the Gray song but I think the singing goes perfectly with the song
- (I wouldn't think his voice would lend itself to electronic music.. I
- actually think his voice detracts from the Hartnoll mix of Please Forgive
- Me).
-
- Meltdown: It's going to take many listens to memorize this song - it's got
- so many changes. I think this is a great track and I too can't wait to hear
- the full version. I can only assume they didn't want to bog down the cd
- with a real long final track after 5 minute tracks.
-
- Overall: My first impression is The Altogether is all over the place in
- terms of musical styles (for an Orbital release at least). It's going to
- take a few more listens for sure to see how I rate this cd but I am pretty
- sure it doesn't top In Sides or MoN for me (those two are my favorite cds of
- all time).
-
- On one hand I'm glad they are experimenting with their sounds again but on
- the other hand I didn't enjoy their previous 'experimental' album (Sniv) as
- much as I would have liked to. But on the other hand if they did come out
- with another In Sides or MoN they would probably pigeonhole themselves (if
- they haven't already). I think I enjoyed the long tracks of In Sides and
- MoN vs. the short but sweet tracks of Sniv and this album.
-
- I think Tension, Tootled, and Meltdown are great hardcore tracks and I would
- like to hear more experimenting with those styles but I'd have to say my
- favorite tracks right now are Funny Break and Last Thing.
-
- Needless to say I am EXTREMELY HAPPY to have some new Orbital to listen to
- once again!

- Does anyone else think that the bits that don't have the vocals

- Good, I'm not the only one that sees a resemblance to Mike Paradinas on this
- album. The "twooooong" noise that appears so much on U-ziq's "Royal
- Astronomy" album seems to appear a few times on "The Altogether."
-
- I'm still listening to The Altogether, but I can say now that I like it.
- It's different than the other techno CRAP that seems to be coming out these
- days. Plaid and Boards of Canada are carry the genre, as far as I'm
- concerned. Frankly, I'm quite glad Orbital came out with this album like
- they did. It's as if they matured and developed a more "armchair" style.
- After "Middle of Nowhere," we should have assumed that the other end of the
- spectrum would occur eventually.
-
- I don't care what anyone says about the new album, because you all will
- eventually like "The Altogether" after a few 100 listens anyway! Then,
- you'll go back on what you said and be like "Umm..it's not THAT bad." (Just
- like Middle of Nowhere).

- I initially thought that, but someone on the loopz web site mentioned
- that it sounds like Forever and I'd have to agree. The distinct
- sound is very much Orbital's signature 'sound' to me (from Belfast,
- Forever, others) but a bit slowed down with a bit more melody, no?
-
- Other than that sound nothing really sounded like mu-ziq to me. The
- parts where the song gets quiet really reminds me of something else
- Orbital did but I can't put my finger on it (maybe some slow parts of
- Are We Here?).

- Okay... Like always, i approached the new album totally unprejudiced! 8)
- Meaning: I did NOT expect anything!..
- And i gotta say: It hasn't yet fully grown on me (only listened once to it sofar!) but it sure has
- potential and there are already quite a few bits that i already like alot! 8)
- The influences from the "stoners techno" (A friend of mine coined that term, dunno what the
- "official" name would be! ;-D realm that remind me of the likes of Kruder & Dorfmeister or
- Nightmares on Wax are definately an interesting thing, slapped bass, groovy basslines and
- Orbital? Hell, works quite well as far as i see! ;-D
- Also the singing part (NOT Grant Fulton or whatever his name was! <:-) is pretty decent!
- The "Orbital Twist" is definately there, but like with e.g. The Prodigy's "Jilted Generation" it's
- there but only very subtle... Too subtle maybe? <:-) I dunno, i prolly can tell after a few listens!..

- -Tootled: very classy Orbital'ish track with a new twist, gotta love the guitar or whatever it is! 8)
-
- -Ol: Also very much classical Orbital style, but in part it has too many samples playing at the
- same time as it seems, plus i always seem to be waiting for the main melody, the bassline
- simply doesn't count as such IMHO! 8)
-
- -Tension: pretty hectic, but okay, i like the Didgeridoo sound in the back.. Sure works great as a
- live track i'd say..
-
- -Pay per View: Great stuff, first of the "stoners Techno" tracks, i love the Rhodes Piano and the
- slapped Bass! 8) Very very groovy, i never had a fuckin CLUE that Orbital was into grooves!
- Definately the "Lala-Machine" (new term for Mrs Goldfrapp! ;-D singing in there if you ask me!
-
- -Illuminate: Great melody!.. The singing is awesome.. Reminds me a bit of DonMcLean/Gordon
- Lightfoot kinda folk singing plus "The Beach" plus maybe GWTSIHH!... <:-) Hell, my Father
- (heavy American Folk fan! ;-D might love that song! ;-)
-
- -Last Thing: Very very oldskool if you ask me, it sounds pretty minimalistic like from the days of
- Green or even earlier (Chime! 8) A bit unmotivated though IMHO, i miss the certain catch that
- turns me onto the track!
-
- -Funny Break: Like it alot! nuff said! <:-)
-
- -Doctor: Well, *we* all know that one by now! ;-D
-
- -Shadows: Nice though not mindblowing.. Can't say much more about it right now! <:-)
-
- -Waving not Drowning: Fuckinell, what on earth is that? <:-) Spare Parts Express meets the first
- Moog Quartet? <:-) Hell, this sounds alot like c64 music, hence i love it alot! ;-D Or is that
- actually the "return of the Stylophone"? 8))
-
- -Meltdown: Aphex'ish disted Drums and Orbital? 8) Sure, why not? That's prolly the 10 minute
- epic Paul has been talking about back then! ;-D Not really "The Box" quality (NOT sequel, mind
- you, i didn't expect that! >:-) but sure has an interesting evolution throughout the song!.. One of
- my faves sofar! Goes along really well with a steady pretty fast pace... The melody that's e.g.
- starting on 6:16 sounds a HELL lot like some c64 tunes i know! 8)
-
- The bastards also integrated some parts that sound like "crippled mp3s" (waving not drowning)
- and loops that sound like your computer crashed and the sound is stuck in a loop (meltdown)! ;-
- D Did anyone except me notice that? 8) Hell, wasn't the windows-bing-error-sound in "Are we
- here" already enough? >;-)
-
- Anyway, i'm not at all disappointed, and that's all that counts! ;-D
-
- DeeKay
-
- P.S.: I didn't find any Mu-Ziq in there, atleast not as far as tne Mu-Ziq that i know is concerned!

-
- I've just been reading this book called "Moby < Replay".
- It's odd to have ones life summed up in a few hundred pages by a 3rd party
- writer. But I appreciate the quasi-objective insight into my life and
- career. And I've realised that I have been a truly annoying and awful man at
- times, especially regarding my career. So, to anyone who might have stuck
- with me for a little while, thank you, I really appreciate it. And I'm sorry
- that I've been so difficult.
- Sheesh, what was wrong with me? Why did I have to pick musical fights with
- people? I love Aphex Twin and Orbital, why did I criticize them? I do
- believe that every time someone criticizes me now that I'm completely
- desrving of it, for in the past I used to be such a jerk.
- Who knows, maybe I'm still a jerk. Probably. I should go to J.A. (Jerks

- In any case, I apologize for being so difficult in the past. And I publicly
- apologize to anyone I might have offended by being abrasive or critical or
- contentious.
- Yours in contrition,

- Wow, that's a cool video! So I guess that was Funny Break, huh? The
- song was good too, but I saw it with the video, so it's a tainted
- opinion. Comments about the video: (go watch it before you read these!)
-
- That's a very pretty actress. I wonder if she's the one that does
- vocals on some of the tracks, or if it's just a completely different person.
-
- I would compare some parts of the video more to Style than the Saint,
- but there are definitely some Saint-like qualities. And then there's
- some anime (when the girl jumps around and moves, how they speed it up
- and slow it down).
-
- Some parts of it even reminded me of Bjork's All Is Full of Love video,
- like the briefcase in the elevator part. As far as the big O's
- presence, there were quite a few instances. The obvious ones were the
- double door in the beginning and end, and the bottle of h2O. There were
- also a couple of Os in the elevator, and that's all I care to remember
- right now.
-
- By the way, the two guards happen to reveal themselves to be a couple of
- people at the end = )... a pair that we know very well. Notice also the
- circular structure, how it starts there, then goes through the water
- theme, then the airport bit, then the museum, and then the girl ends up
- where she started, at the museum baggage claim (baggage claim? Maybe
- that's not a museum...)

- Josh here.
-
-
- Back from months of madness.
-
-
- Well, it finally took fuckin' long enough before the album was finally
- uploaded to Napster !!!
-
-
- I checked for weeks and there was barely anything.
-
-
-
- Here's my review so far :
-
-
- 1) TOOTLED .... is great. If In Sides or the live versions of Halcyon didn't
- make converts out of anyone here in the US, this track surely will.
-
- 2) OI! .... is total modeling runway music. Maybe this one should've been
- named Style instead. ;-) 50% LFO , 50% Yello.
-
- 3) TENSION.... I had heard an early version of this. 45% Surf Music , 45% of
- Yello's "Squeeze Please", and 10% of "Woolly Bully" .
-
- 4) PAY PER VIEW .... FUCKING LOVE THIS TRACK !!!!!! The classic utterings
- from Sexy Voice Box Goldfrapp (although she reminds me a bit of Anita Baker
- here), with beautiful, lush arrangements and a
- Kraftwerk-ish beat. French roasted vanilla eroticism.
-
- I hope that Larry Heard will remix this one ;-)
-
-
- 5) ILLUMINATE .... Love the sunny, sugary vintage keyboard pad chords all
- throughout. But the drums have this General MIDI feel that I really don't
- like (anyone who's a techie will know what I mean about this). This is also
- what I terribly hated about the Expo 2000 remix for Kraftwerk. Mr.. Gray
- does great on the vox, but this will confuse the shit out of fans as to whom
- the track should be credited to if a single is released (see : Art Of Noise
- & Tom Jones version of "Kiss") .
-
- 6) LAST THING .... Classic Orbital.
- Could've been a leftover from MoN that REALLY should've been on the album
- (and the angels cried out - Mock Tudor !!!! ) .
-
- 7) FUNNY BREAK .... The Plump DJ's mix is far better, although I like the
- airy, orchestral sound that this version has when the vocals kick in.
-
- 8) DOCTOR WHO .... I wasn't a huge fan of this song live to begin with.
- Enough said; flame on.
-
- 9) SHADOWS .... Some cool-ass 007 shit with the classic *trademarked by Art
- Of Noise* space vox keyboard pads towards the end. Gotta love those vibes
- (or xylophones; it's always hard for me to tell the difference between the
- two) as well.
-
- 10) WAVING NOT DROWNING ..... If Simon & Garfunkel, Jean-Michel Jarre, and
- Kenny G all had one massive gay orgy one night, this would be the "aural
- results" ;-P .
-
- But all horrible joking aside, I really like this track too. ;-)
-
-
- 11) MELTDOWN ...... It's really fuckin' tripped. It's hard, then goes into a
- video game soundtrack with those minimal (once again) General MIDI sounding
- guitar samples (the GM guitar thing is also why I have such immense
- disrespect for ATB and how fucking popular he became by using such crap
- sounds). I don't know how to rate this track yet.
-
-
- I give the album a 7 out of 10.
-
- I think it's way fuckin' better than Sniv will EVER be (flame again) .
-
- Even though some might not like it, I think it'll still be promoted very
- well.
-
- IMHO, Orbital is the only group that has and still continues to keep ffrr,
- London, and now, Sire alive (although the latter still is the US home to
- Aphex Twin).
-
- So fuck it !!!
-
-
-
- Now about Depeche Mode's "Exciter" ......
-
- Heard this one last month, and it pretty much can be described in the same
- vein as this album; very diverse and prolly won't be any of the fans'
- favorites.
-
- If y'all want a review of that one in another post, send me your replies.
- It's not out until May 14/15 (UK/US, respectively).
-
-
- Late.
