(4) TROUBLESHOOTING
-------------------
The following are some of the more common problems you might have, and
recommended solutions:
Q: There is no game sound.
A: First, check all your connections between your speakers and your
computer. Make sure your speakers are turned on and receiving power.
Make sure the volume is not turned down all the way. You can change
sound and music volume in the 'Game Options' window.
If none of the above suggestions works, try producing sound in another
program. If that does not work, make sure you have the sound driver
enabled in your kernel. If you are running KDE, make sure that the
artscd sound daemon has released the sound card. Finally, go to
http://www.opensound.com/ to see whether a commercial driver is
available for your sound card.
Q: I am playing in windowed mode and I can't scroll at all.
A: You can press CTRL-G to toggle whether or not the mouse is grabbed.
When the mouse is grabbed, you can scroll easily, but cannot access
other applications on the desktop.
Q: I have the mouse grabbed, but I still can't scroll.
A: You have three different options for scrolling:
- Run the game in fullscreen mode
- Use the arrow keys or middle button drag to scroll the map
- Use the mousewheel and Ctrl-mousewheel to scroll the map
- Set the environment variable SDL_MOUSE_RELATIVE=1
Q: What is this DGA 2.0 acceleration option?
A: XFree86 4.0 provides a way for X11 applications to grab control of
the display and use hardware acceleration for blitting.
Kohan can take advantage of this by passing it the "--dga"
command- line option when starting up.
There are several caveats however:
- This option is COMPLETELY UNSUPPORTED. While we've seen it working
properly on several DGA implementations, it hasn't been fully tested
on all X server and video card configurations.
- It requires root permissions to work properly. We have added
experimental support for using DGA as a normal user if you have
the framebuffer console working, but this is even more unsupported. :)
- You can't toggle between windowed and fullscreen operation.
Note, Kohan also works on the framebuffer console, unsupported.
Q: Can I host a game behind a firewall?
A: Yes, you need to have IP masquerading enabled on your firewall, and
then forward UDP packets to the firewall on ports 17437 and 3855 to
the internal machine that is hosting the game. As always, opening
network services inside your firewall introduces a security risk, so
don't do it unless you're comfortable taking that risk.
