  4.                          Becoming a League Speaker
  5.  
  6.    The League needs more speakers: members who can give talks at
  7. computer companies, universities, rotary clubs, or anywhere else that
  8. people will listen.  Recently the CPSR chapter in San Diego asked for
  9. an LPF speaker, but we could find only two possibilities in Southern
  10. California, and only one of them experienced.

  12.    If you would like to become a speaker, the first step is to read the
  13. position papers carefully, as well as "Lotus
  14. Disinformation--Forewarned is Forearmed" for information on certain
  15. claims standardly made by the other side.  You can also read the many
  16. articles in `Communications of the ACM' this year.  We can send you
  17. copies of some other material if you want.

  19.    Then start discussing the issues with other people one at a time;
  20. learn the questions people will ask if they are not sure of their
  21. positions, and the usual ideological statements of business
  22. conservatives.

  24.    Then offer to give a talk on the subject where you work, to ten or
  25. twenty people who already know you.  This may be less frightening than
  26. speaking before strangers.

  28.    After this, start speaking to whoever wants to listen.

  30.    Whenever you give a talk on the subject, bring enough copies of the
  31. League literature to give out to the entire audience.  Give out copies
  32. of both position papers, as well as membership forms.

  34.    The position papers seem to convince most people who have no strong
  35. commitment to the opposing view, so if you can just convince the
  36. audience to take the time to read them, you have probably done a good
  37. job.
