HISTORY
=======
I never new how boring a good session of gaming could get until I had
to referee my players when they gathered an army to fight another army.
We came up with a simple system of dice rolling to say who lived and
who died. This was fine (sure beat rolling to hit for every person in
an army) so we thought. Then the FRP gaming systems came out with there
own rules "battlesystem" to do mass army attacks. These rules still took
too long and were centered around metal figures (I don't have that many).
So at the suggestion of a well known programmer (Author of the Tome of
Vast Knowledge) I wrote a simple program to do mass battles: The Fantasy
War Simulator version 1. This program still did not take into effect many
aspects of warfare, but it was simple to use.
[Time Passes...]
I needed a program that would take into account: initiative, weather,
terrain, time of day, fatigue, movement, armor, weapons, night vision,
seige attacks, etc. And also give the game master and players some
control over the fate of the battle. This is the Fantasy War Simulator
version 2.0!
PS: I am not good with documentation. The registered copy has better
docs.
REQUIREMENTS:
-------------
IBM pc/xt/at compatable
640k ram
EGA/VGA/SVGA graphics
hard drive (registered version)
[Note: Some 286 compatables and IBM PS/1 and PS/2 models will not
be able to run this program. If the unregistered version
works, then the registered version will work too.]
SETUP:
------
Install the program WARSIM2.EXE and TITLE.PIC in a directory.
This can be done simply by copying these two files from the distribution
disk to your hard drive.
GETTING STARTED:
----------------
The program will ask you for information on setting up your armies.
The program assumes that you have 1 attacking army and 1 defending
army. These armies are then divided into troops. Each troop can
be a separate class of fighter and hold as many fighters as you want.
Simple key-presses are made to answer most of the screen prompts.
Only when inputing number of troops and men will the program need you
to press RETURN/ENTER after the entry.
FEATURES:
*Selectable troop characteristics
*Weather adjustments
*Terrain adjustments
*Time adjustments
*Seige attack
*Retreatable troops
*Infravision/night vision
*Real-time battle updates
*Initiative rolling
*Each man in a troop gets to attack
*Computer tracks attack/dammage of each man in each
troop.
*To-Hit die roll has a natural hit/fumble roll.
*Fatigue adjustments per 12 hours.
*Final update at end of battle
*Moral checking
*Retreating of casualties
THE BATTLE:
==========
The battle screen shows both sides including their starting TOTAL strength
points (all the strength points from all the troops on that side),
the remaining TOTAL strength points, and the "to-hit" ratio (percentage
of successful hits vs. misses during 20 rounds of fighting).
Also the time of day and how many days have past is given.
There is even a place for men retreated. These "retreated" men are
those that got frightened (moral check) or were wounded and ran away
from the battle.
You can at any time press any key to go to the BATTLE UPDATE screen.
BATTLE UPDATE:
The battle update screen allows you to view both sides troops and see
their status and how many men are left. You can press 1 to change the
status of a troop on side one, 2 to change the status of a troop on
side 2, or 3 to end the Battle entirely. PRESS 0 TO RETURN TO THE
BATTLE.
You can retreat troops in the BATTLE UPDATE screen. You can also bring
troops back into battle that have already retreated.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
THIS IS AN UNREGISTERED COPY
The unregistered version only allows 2 troops per side.
REGISTERED VERSION:
The registered version has all of the same features as the unregistered
version plus:
* Up to 15 troops per side, each troop with virtually
unlimited size in men.
* Real-time battle statistics and updates to an ASCII text
file on disk. This is so you can look over the battle
that was fought and see where you went wrong/right and
what you will need to prepare for in the next battle.
[good information for the captain of the army etc.]
It also will let you know which troops retreated and how
many casualties are in each.
* Document file containing all charts used in the battle
routines (with explanations).
* Added to a mailing list to keep you informed on upcoming
programs and revisions.
* Support. You are added to the mailing list for update
information and can contact the author at any time with
questions and comments.
