Personal History:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vincent grew up the son of one Vicktor de la Sangre, nicknamed "Bloodsucker" by
his friends and enemies alike. He was a famous and hugely wealthy
industrialist, the primary stockholder in a number of interstellar
corporations. Vicktor spent his life wheeling and dealing from one side of the
Federation to the other, yet for all his wealth and power, he saw little of his
family, though he provided for them in no small measure. Hence, Vincent, as
early back as the age of twelve, found himself living the comfortable if hectic
existence of a dependently wealthy playboy, skirting the private boarding
school his father had sent him to by literally hiring somebody to take his
place. Vincent believed that school was for fools, and that the only education
a person could rely on is that which they gathered by their own wits and god-
given ingenuity (of which he had precious little). Hence, on his 18th birthday,
he was caught with a harem of orion slave girls at his father's lunar mansion
by private security people sent to watch over him (his father, ever-paranoid,
was worried about the possible kidnapping of his son). When Vicktor found out,
Vincent was given a stern ultimatum. Enter Star Fleet and learn some discipline
or be disinherited and thrown, penniless, to the dogs of fate. Needless to say,
Vincent chose the former option.
Service History
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vincent was "awarded" a spot at the Academy as a personal favor from a friend
of his father. However, getting through the underclassmen weeding process
proved to be too difficult a task, and Vincent was nearly expelled from the
Academy after only eight months of study for attempting to bribe one of his
instructors. He knew that should he be thrown out, he'd utterly lose face in
the family (all of whom thought he was some sort of genius for the outstanding
grades which were attributed to him from the private boarding school he never
physically attended). Further, he knew that his father would likely toss him
out on his ear and let the cruel world have its evil way with poor, helpless
Vincent. As it turned out, however, Vince was to be saved.
Apparently, the instructor who had reported the bribe had also been playing
hanky-panky with the dean's wife, and through a humorous and equally improbable
turn of events, Vincent came into possession of the incriminating evidence.
Hence, where the carrot had failed him, the stick surely did the job, and
things were quickly smoothed over with the administration, despite Vincent
having to repeat the class in question.
It was this lesson that taught him two things. First, information is often more
powerful than money, and second, the best way to get to the toys is to be a
member of the team. Vincent joined the Department of Security at his earliest
possible convenience.
The remainder of his years at the Academy were rather uneventful. Although he'd
already acquired a reputation for being a spoiled brat, he was slowly earning a
second reputation for being a real delver when it came to using surveillance
and reconnaissance equipment, so much so, that he was soon nick-named "Sneaky"
by his friends. Of course, his prominent status as a child of wealth and
prestige somewhat precluded him from entrance into SFIC (which was his real
ambition).
Vince's Cadet Cruise was aboard the USS Quintillus, an old scout ship cruising
semi-explored worlds along the inner rim. Perhaps the only reason his was given
the assignment was because he'd graduated late (by six months), and since
midshipman assignments occur only annually, he had a full six months to kill en
route to his next assignment. While aboard the Quintillus, he somehow managed
to not get into trouble and was promoted to Ensign a year later. He remained
aboard the Quintillus for another two years, even when it was transferred to
Colonial Operations Command. However, on Christmas Eve of '36, his father died
at an business-party due to "unbeknownst circumstances". Vincent wouldn't hear
of the incident for another three months, partly due to the lag in subspace
communications at the time, and partly due to his ship's communication officer
forgetting to inform him. When Vince finally did find out, by going through old
news articles while on shore leave, he proceeded to get thoroughly drunk and
then punch out the communication officer in question. The fight was broken up
quickly, and Vincent was put in a holding tank to sleep off his alcohol. Even
though no charges were filed, Vince was put on a leave of absence so that he
could go back to Earth to pay his final respects.
It was during the trip home that it slowly dawned on Vincent that he could
resign his commission and go back to his life of shameless debauchery, which
after only eight years was still relatively fresh in his mind. Indeed, he
decided to burn up a few brain cells with alcohol and his renewed conquest of
the female species. Unfortunately for Vincent, he was so long out-of-practice
that it was he who was conquered, and not the other way around. Hence, upon
returning to Earth, he got to introduce his mother and his wife to one another.
The marriage proved to be short-lived, however, as Vince soon realized that he
wasn't really in love with her nor her with him. He'd wanted someone to hold on
to, the sudden realization that his father was gone (the man he'd feared and
despised for so many years of his life) throwing him into an eerie depression
which she was able to temporarily quench. She, on the other hand, wanted to be
dazzled by wealth and prestige and saw her handsome Star Fleet Ensign with
conspicuous financial credentials as a means toward getting her dream-palace in
the sky. They stayed married long enough to produce one offspring, a son who
they named George. However, Vince knew he could never fill his father's
business shoes, and that his newfound inheritance was more likely to corrupt
him as it had done in the past. In a rare spurt of decisiveness, he sunk his
inheritance in long-term investments for his son, make a clean divorce with his
wife, and leaving his lawyers and her lawyers to fight over the legalities of
his actions. In the end, she got a very nice stipend for child-support, but
Vince was unconcerned. All he cared about was the fact that his son would not
grow-up a rich snob as he had, and that finally he had something constructive
to do with his life, even though his career in Star Fleet had yet to take any
definitive shape.
Vince returned to Star Fleet Academy in 2239, this time by choice, in order to
attend Graduate Combat School, a short-lived section where starship and ground
tactics as well as martial arts and marksmanship were taught all under one
roof. Even though he worked his ass off, he barely made it through with passing
marks and was not promoted for his efforts as was his hope.
In 2240 he accepted a post for his first five-year mission. It was aboard a
destroyer acting as backup for the big cruisers operating along the Klingon
frontier. During the fourth year of that mission, his ship had received
intelligence from the Klingon High Command that a Gothmog fleet was operating
from within Federation territory, posing as Klingon raiders in order to incite
renewed tensions between the Klingons and the Federation. His ship soon found
the enemy base, and he was a squad leader in the platoon that went down to
clean out the Gothmogs. After the main attack, the majority of the Federation
ground forces were pinned down under fire after having suffered heavy losses.
Vincent, against orders from his superior officer to hold his position, led his
squad through the ruins of the urban battlefield, flanking the Klingons, and
routing them from their positions in a surprise attack. Though the move proved
a success and saved numerous lives, Vince was severely reprimanded for
knowingly disobeying direct orders. Nonetheless, he had earned a good
reputation among the soldiers, and news of his courage got around.
In 2246 Vince found himself part of yet another military operation, this time
against a highly organized mercenary company which was holding an entire colony
hostage pending the outcome of certain demands. Vince, already known for being
somewhat of a do-it-yourselfer, was given the "honor" of first strike, that is,
to lead the first squad over the line. Essentially a suicide mission, he
nonetheless accepted and carried out his orders. However, as expected, his
squad was pinned down between two buildings, each full of both attackers and
hostages. While the bulk of his team was getting roasted in the wide-beam
cross-fire, Vince managed to blast a hole through the street and into the
subway. He stayed behind to cover the retreat as best he could, but he was
wounded before he himself could escape. Without the ability to beam out due to
transporter jammers, and succumbing to massive shock, he was effectively left
for dead. Only when the USS Goethals commenced with wide-area stun bombardment
was the situation even marginally controlled. When Vince was finally discovered
several minutes later, he was taken back for emergency surgery, and narrowly
avoided death. However, despite the success of the surgery, he lost his right
leg, and had to have it replaced with a piece of hardware.
It was during this time in the hospital that he learned that he was finally to
be promoted (to a whopping 2nd Lieutenant). Needless to say, he was overjoyed
as the prospect of no longer being a lowly Ensign, and he sent word to his
mother along with his purple heart. However, news of the promotion somehow
travelled to his nine-year-old son, George, who made the voyage out to see his
dad, bionic leg and all. Worse still, somehow the lad got the idea that his
father was to be promoted to Ship's Captain, a white-lie on the part of Vince's
mother, no doubt. So, upon catching up with the USS Goethals to finish up his
assignment, he told his Captain of the problem. Captain Ash not only decided to
swap ranks for a day, but he even had the bridge crew program some simulations
so that little George would have interesting stories to tell about skirmishes
with the Romulans.
His next assignment was aboard the Helios as a weapons targeting coordinator.
Despite being a ground-grunt for so long, he took well to the new job and
managed to improve the efficiency of the target acquisition procedures during
his short time aboard the ship.
After the Helios, an opening for an assistant security chief with strong
experience in both dirt-side and shipboard operations opened up aboard the USS
Tycho. Vince applied for and got the position, despite the fact that he was
still only a 2nd Lieutenant. In short, his resume outweighed his rank. After
serving for a year, however, the Tycho happened into a rare encounter with an
Andorian terrorist group known as the Warriors of Andor. They'd set up a base
where they were holding various political prisoners, and were in the process of
moving to a safer location when the Tycho discovered them. Vince took a small
group of men with him into the complex, and managed to infiltrate their
security. He was not only successful in bringing out the prisoners, but he
managed to sabotage the main powerplant and escape undetected, earning him a
Bronze star.
At the decoration ceremony, he was offered a position as a supervising
technician at a Planetary Survivalist School on Alpha Cygnus VI. The offer came
as a result of his special training in surveillance devices in Star Fleet
Academy. They needed somebody to revamp their surveillance system so that they
could monitor the students more closely. Further, they wanted somebody with
extensive dirt-side combat experience, something in which Vince had become
somewhat of an expert. However, after spending six months setting up numerous
electronic bugs and holographic imaging scanners, he suddenly found all his
hard work fall into the wrong hands. The orbital station was captured by a
group of Ferengi who were looking for Federation officers to sell as slaves.
Hence, Vince was forced to teach them how to use his equipment in order to help
them locate the class which was trapped on the surface, lurking in subterranean
caves, hiding from the Ferengi. Even though he obeyed the Ferengi leader, one
Damon Zar, in order to keep the captives in orbit alive, he was also
surreptitiously helping the class of survivalists to avoid capture by finding
ways to communicate with them.
For about two weeks, he managed to help the students avoid capture, but Damon
Zar decided to start using explosives to cave-in the cavern complex bit by bit.
During one of these cave-ins, the Ferengi Commander captured a young Deltan
Lieutenant and instantly fell ears over toe-hairs in lustful rapture, deciding
then and there that he would keep this beauty for himself rather than sell her
off at auction. The other Ferengi began to get jealous over this turn of
events, and despite the girl's unsavory situation, she was able to convince the
Ferengi boss that she would give herself to him willingly if he would stop the
cave-ins (hence giving up the students who he had not yet captured). He agreed
to this, and immediately, open rebellion ensued as the other Ferengi were
unwilling to more than halve their shares because of Zar's lust. Vince took the
opportunity to free the Deltan lieutenant and help her free the rest of the
captives. A huge battle ensued shortly thereafter, and despite serious
casualties, the Ferengi were forced into full retreat.
After going through Dept. Head School and getting his promotion to Lt.
Commander, Vince was sent to the Konkordium, a Federation Class Dreadnought. As
the Security Chief aboard one of the most honored ships in the fleet, it was by
far, the most prestigious assignment he'd ever been given. Unfortunately,
things did not go well for him. For starters, the Captain, one Evans Stuart
Andersen III, was a virtual nutcase. The son of one of Vicktor de la Sangre's
chief rivals in the corporate/financial world, he'd risen through the ranks
largely on his ability to push politicians for funding. He knew of Vince's
reputation with listening devices and concocted a scheme whereby he would bug
the offices of various politicians and then, when the bugs would be discovered,
pass the blame over to his Chief of Security, thereby killing two birds with
one stone.
Vince was nearly court-martialed as a result of this scheme, unable to prove
his innocence. It was almost too late before he finally figured out what was
really going on. Vince contacted Andersen and told him that he'd spill the
beans come the final hearing. Even though the "beans" would be entirely
unprovable, they would no doubt stain Andersen's golden reputation. Instead,
they struck a deal. Vince agreed to plead guilty to the minor charge of
breaking and entering in return for Andersen coming to his defense with "new"
evidence that "greater powers in government" were actually behind the buggings,
and that Vince had fair reason to believe that he was acting under orders. So,
although severely reprimanded, Vince was able to maintain his rank and stay in
Star Fleet, though at the cost of his pride in finally bending-over for
Andersen in the end. After the final verdict, they made a gentleman's agreement
to stay clear of each other's way.
After this unsavory segment of his career, Vince managed to hook-up with his
old captain from the Goethals. Captain Ash was now Commodore Ash, he
discovered. He was running a deep-space refueling facility and needed a first
officer for one of the station's defense boats. After what had just happened,
it was the best assignment Vince could hope to land for himself. So, for the
last two and a half years, Vince has been serving as first officer under
Commander Oliver Drake, Captain of the USS Graz.
Medical Notes:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vince's only serious medical difficulty has to do with his bionic leg. Over the
past decade, he's been in situations where he had to overuse it (such as
kicking his way through Damon Zar's door to let out that Deltan Lieutenant so
they could go free the other captives). Although he's been able to get the leg
fixed from time to time, the overuse has stressed the tissue and bones around
the leg, in one instance so much that he had to have his pelvic bone replaced
by a poly-fibre carbonate. The doctors have told him that if he tries to stress
it too far, he could very well end up ripping out his entire groin, something
they don't recommend very highly.
